The two we have seen are mini dealers but am happy to trawl elsewhere. Prepared to devote a couple of days to it before the weekend.

I’m happy to walk and never come back, but then I’d probably have to do the same at home! Would that mean I would only have to wait to the end of tomorrow?

We’re looking at £12/15k and no P/X. Just that I’ve heard that its nigh on impossible with Minis.

I spent all my working career in public service. Teaching, Whitehall, Local government. Well paid final salary pension etc. Bought two houses for women I didn’t like so had f all 10 years ago.

Made redundant a year ago with no savings and £200k mortgage. Lived on redundancy and odd jobs/consultancy/joke seekers. Nightmare as am 55. Felt forced to take pension early. That meant I lost 20% of its value but days after I did it I got a contact to provide services to a consortium of schools (cause they can’t get it of councils anymore). That combined with the pension means I’m on far more than I was before and have a nice lump sum to cushion the unexpected.

I feel much more secure than I have done for years.

Sod all to do with money. My Mrs hasn’t once complained about not being able to buy handbags or other shite. For the 8 years we’ve been together the mutual support has been the defining factor in feeling secure.

Will monitor the numbers from now on! Even my maths can cope with that one. Understand the machine costs are loss leaders. A higher volume b&w one to supplement present one might be the best option.

Thanks for the tip funky. Will give them a try as it seems alot cheaper. Not sure what high volume is and when it would become cheaper to go to a small laser. The numbers i’m talking about are absolute max.

Yes I add the cost to whatever I’m doing for work and it is only about 500 a month and probably about 250 that the Mrs does of handbags and photos etc. So mixed use and yes do need colour.

It just feels like I’m going to PC rip off all the while. Never seem to come out less than £50 lighter.

Just switched phone on. At the European Semaine in Ardennes. Did 800 m of climbing in 60km today. Thought Belgium was flat. Start riding to Normandy on Sunday. Looking forward to seeing you. Will have tickets for 1st round only!

Some excellent stuff here. Can’t post pics now but will add a set of lovely wooden garage doors when I can. They’re so nice I want to buy the house they’re attached to.

Elfin I’ve walked through your first post……. as an expert witness not a felon before you start.

How about elements of buildings? Doors? Roofs etc.

This thread may not be an entitlement, it’s more like a cornerstone of STW life.

That’s my kind of planned maintenance programme. Thanks for the ideas. I’ll let you know what I get.

Is STW solely Tod and Edinburgh based? I’m only a guest as I only spend a couple of weeks in with friends in MS

That looks good. Anybody actually own/use one?

£250ish. Will use it when riding so rough treatment possible. Optical zoom and high definition as poss. Other than that basic usability rather than over sophistication.

Done Alpe d’Huez, Madeline, Telegraph, Laurent Galibier but most enjoyable was les Deux Alpes in 2001. Rode it just before the Tour went up. Wasn’t expecting the road to be open but when I saw some people going up I went back to the car and got the bike. Totally not expected to be able to do it. Was about the last rider the police let through. The crowds were fantastic and gave me special attention as I was wearing a yellow tee shirt ……… and baggies and a floppy sun hat. The Dutch were really partying. Think I got on Danish TV as I kept up with some minor celeb who was being filmed while riding up. He was obviously being helped/encouraged by the former pro Bo Hamburger who was doing the chatting to the celeb, camera van, crowd etc. Nice block with perfect English. Hardly breathing as he chatted while I gasped. Magic day apart from the descent after the stage was spoilt by the crowds walking down blocking the road.

My Blow Joe failed on the same thing as well! Got a Park one now. Doing well so far. But may be too exensive at £50ish. I find Decathlon good value and wouldn’t hesitate to try one.

It also depends on how heavy you are. Fat bar stewards like me find Michelin Pro 25s perfect for most things, but on the fast wheels I use Conti Attack and Force. They are 24mm rear and 22mm front specific. i also think Michelins come up abit bigger than their Conti counterpoints. I’ve ridden 32mm Bonti racelites on a touring bike and they performed fine with and without load on.

Am riding over with a couple of old mates I used to race with many moons ago. The oldest is 74! I’m a mere sprog at 55! We will be doing the road stuff. I’ll be on a red and white Condor and mainly Phil Corley or white kit. We will only be speaking English! Despite meeting and riding with a Frenchman we met 3 years ago. He was Jacques Cousteau’s camera man! Oh and a couple of scouser’s we also picked up! I’ll stand you a beer if you find us.

That’s the plan. On the road early and sort site after a ridiculus sprint for a village sign at about 80km (pretending to be Cav with panniers). I never had an issue and not worried about Normandy. Just the first bit is new territory.

Thanks, I know what you’re saying as have been several times before in the south and Alps. However this route is across the non tourist section of the Nord and it seems much harder to find any. All the sites I’ve identified tend to be too close to the coast. Just want a few bankers as have to get to an event without wasting alot of energy. Looks like I might be contributing to the bivi thread.

I’ve picked up a Condor to do just what the OP described. However I’ve tried to fit the rear rack and it fouls the rear brake. Djg/hb47 did you have the same issue? Mine look exactly like the photo of djg’s.

This Tim’s in! I reckon it could be Miller or Kloden as they are close enough on time and are in teams that have little prospect of the final podium. Although hard it won’t drive hugh gaps and Miller getting a few seconds up on the heads wouldn’t be chased down.

Pockets on a jersey are for food and sunglasses, arm warmers and a phone or cash at a stretch. Spares are carried in the mechanics (wife’s) car that should be following 100m behind.

Another for an early start. Have taken one of those Decathlon pop up tents as it can provide shade during the wait. Its also fun in the crowd before the race gets there. Take some emulsion paint to do something creative on the road.

Any benefit (gift, legacy, extra contact outside work etc) must be declared. Its got to be declared to the employer. It can count as a conflict of interest.

Report to council asap. Even if the career works for another company under direct payments scheme the council have the ultimate duty of care.

In true STW tradition I’d say those socks were too long and the lawn needs cutting.

Any Shimano front road changer will work. I thought the trim came from the lever mechanism. All that happens with the mech is it responds how much cable is pulled.

I’ve got 105 pulling Ultegra fine. Double and triple.

Totally agree the UCI are so crap. It should have been sorted for the sport let alone Contador. If he and (particularly) Armstrong go down then all the sponsors will walk away. Shame it won’t happen to footy in the same way.

That first start doesn’t help Contador. No time checks to work off. Agree it would be nice for Thomas to get yellow. I’d rather him have success than Winjo.

Caught behind and now out to 40 seconds. Another crash to the second group. I reckon Gilbert.

Contador lost 34 seconds. A lot of time at this stage.
