I have a 2.4 and if I was into racing and that malarky I wouldn’t hesitate to run it. Yes, you run the risk of puncturing but there ism’t really an alternative to match it in terms of grip and volume for the weight. Great tyre if that’s what you want. A lot like a hans dampf but with a vey thin sidewall and very little puncture protection. Much, much faster though.

what are they like for having fun on or are they too stable/planted for proper fun riding (ie taking down the proper jumps rather than trail centre style jumps etc)?

I don’t think stripeminister will mind me posting this up in answer to your question. The 1st rider is me, the 2nd him.
We’re both novices at the jumping game but I’d say it jumps ok :)

I’ve now had a couple of great rides on mine, one down sticks pass on Helvellyn, the second a quick blast around LLandegla and loving it so far. Big thanks to Mike for getting the frame to me (where I was staying in the Lakes) in time so that I could build it up in the holiday cottage and get some riding in before the end of my holiday! Luckily I’d managed not to forget any components when packing my suitcase!

Detailing on the headtube looks superb.

I like the gothic graphics but will be interested to see the updated ones.

Hope V4’s proved themselves worthy on Helvellyn and feel amazing.

Mincing XC tyre was removed as soon as I had access to a compressor!

My mother always says, “Don’t ride your 160’s at Llandegla or you’ll not feel the benefit”. On her advice I’ll be dropping them down to 140 very soon. Great feeling fork though and suit the frame very nicely.

I actually like the simplicity of just having the 203mm rotor without an adaptor, it looks cleaner and setting the brake up was a doddle.

The finished article, well almost. I’ll be swapping my SS nano’s on once I can remove them from my old cranks :x and getting a KS Lev on once funds allow.

    Summit of Helvellyn :D

LLandegla, lots of fun but should have listened to mother. Also mangled my rear mech because I thought I’d risk running the chain too short. Clutch mech and new chain now on order.

Anyhow, thanks again to Mike for a fantastic frame and great service. I’ve not quite got it set up how I want it just yet but initial impressions are it is so much sturdier than my Soul was and is much more the kind of bike I want to be riding. Landing jumps the lack of flex is much more confidence inspiring and so far I’ve not found it to be uncomfortable. One thing I was very pleased about is it climbs well even with the 160’s on. I’ll give some more impressions of it once I’ve spent some more time on it :D

SLX clutch mech ordered. Annoyed that I need a new one just after ribble did such a good deal on them, typical! Can’t win them all.

It’s an older bike with something like 30.6mm

18 Bikes, as well as I am sure other good good shops, could perhaps ream your seat tube out to 30.9.

Orange looks great, but white is very nice too…
I’ve got mine all built up and loving it so far! Broke it in on Helvellyn on Friday :)
I’m off out for another ride but here’s a little teaser pic!

I presume this is the image people buying the new Pikes want to present to the world.

Thanks all. I think I’ll just use them at 160mm until I can lay my hands on some Torco 7 (or Rockshox 5wt).

you are considering sticking out of spec oil in them already?

I can’t find Torco 7 locally and I don’t want to wait for it if I don’t need to. Normally I too am a bit of a stickler for such things!

I’d have taken the old frame to Eurobike and hung about the Commencal stand telling my woes to anyone who’d listen. Doubt it’d take too long before you reached a more favourable agreement.

I like the look of the Alpines. Are they available yet?

They’ll be in stock on monday morning.

What makes you shy away from the new Alpine messiah?

The new piglet frame looks nice, but for me it’s ruined by the paint job. Looks like an overgrown kids bike to me.

I’d say the Soul is considerably more forgiving/flexy depending on your point of view. It’s head angle is also a good deal steeper and so its handling is less downhill orientated. I still found my Soul to be a hoot when pointed downhill and the Soul is the closer match to the geometry of the Piglet.

The 456 Evo 2 is fantastic value for money. The frame has some really nice details, I particularly like the bulge butted seat tube. It is of a lot better quality than I was expecting. Only downside for me is the headtube is still 1 1/8th only, which you may be ok with since you presumably have some 1 1/8th forks from the piglet.

Having said all that my mk3 dialled alpine arrives next week :D

Mountain bikes are quite suitable for use during winter, in fact part of me is quite looking forward to it. Off to the Lakes for 10 days in the pissing rain :)

This is still on topic as all being well I’ll get some time in on my Slants.

Yup, what feels like a lifetime but is in fact no longer than has been promised from day 1. Arriving next week and can’t bloody wait.

Thanks Dialled, gonna be one hell of an Autumn.

    I’ll be buying British/Taiwanese again.

    This one.

Again i am looking for integrated.

Unless I am much mistaken you will need to use this external bottom cup in a 44mm head tube. You should be able to keep your current 1 1/8 integrated top cup.

‘On adog’ – Often found at Cannock at night, without his bike

‘Oscillate Willy’ – Also at found at Cannock at night, watched by ‘On adog’

‘milky an’ – gives thanks to ‘Oscillate Willy’ for her user name and often accompanies him on Cannock trips.

203mm only still, guessing the 2014 supposedly coming at the end of the month may be 180mm.

Use it on the drive side assuming you are not using a BB mounted chain device.

Edit: (3 spacers would be required for a 68mm BB.)

    From Facebook today….

Good news for all the Dialled Bikes Alpine pre-order customers who have been waiting patiently for their frames to arrive. Just had notification that they are clearing customs this week and will be delivered to DBHQ on Monday AM. Customers can therefore expect to have them by Thursday/Friday next week (overseas customers during the following week).

Not all frames are pre-ordered, so we will have stock ready to send out towards the end of next week.

bungalistic – did you use a spacer to reduce them to 150, or have you drilled the ‘ladder’ thingy?

I have a set waiting to go on my dialled alpine, cannot friggin wait!

Mmm. Looks like a nice job, I’d probably not worry about it too much.

I had my Soul sand blasted and powder coat for £25. It did look good and still polishes up quite nicely, but it isn’t the toughest of finishes. The problem with powder coat is it is just that, a coating. It doesn’t really adhere to the frame but rather just encapsulates it. Once chipped there is potential for water ingress.

If it helps, you may have been lucky not to have got the frame sandblasted. I had my frame back after blasting with a view to making some modifications and so saw what it looked like in the bare metal. The surface was full of small dimples left by the blasting. The blasting procedure has the effect of work hardening the surface of the metal. I can’t be sure that having the frame blasted didn’t contribute (though probably only in a small way) to the demise of my Soul (it’s now cracked at the chainstay and the head tube).

So, if you are happy with the job they have done, I wouldn’t worry about them not removing the paint first, just get it built up and get out and ride it!

    It was me.

I reached the top only to realise that it had been more than 72 hours since I last logged in to STW. Since all of my decisions are informed by this forum I then went into a spiral of insecurity resulting in a panic attack fuelled by a raging internal inferno of buyers remorse. I am told I was heard muttering “slx..xt…No! deore is plenty” whilst hunched over my bike locked in a transcendental gaze.

When I came around I considered my only option to be to walk down whilst pondering the smallness of my mind by comparison with the STW hive mind, thankful for my narrow escape from inevitable ignorance led dissatisfaction. Later, whilst recovering from the ordeal in Caffi Gwynant, I stumbled across a copy of ‘Horse and Rider’ and decided to part exchange my bike for a java pony and McClellan saddle.

Thanks for all the responses, I’m sold on giving it a go. Am I right in thinking Eastridge is the last round this year? I guess that gives me winter to get used to my new bike!

I’d second taking a run along the canal. More specifically, I’d join the canal at the Symphony Hall (you can walk through to reach the canal at the back). You cross a bridge then you want to head to the left. This takes you along quite a scenic stretch of the canal and out towards the university. If thats not far enough then you can detour when you reach ‘the vale’ (a very nice park en circled by student halls but will be very quite at the moment).

Really hoping they are coming this week, it’d suck to go off to the lakes without a bike to ride! I am remaining positive, can’t hurt.

Looks white to me, it’s one of the photo’s Mike released many months ago.

Slowrider – how are you building yours up? I’ve got a white frame coming and I’m going with x fusion slants (probably at 140mm), shimano xt/slx drivetrain, hope brakes and pro2 eve/stans flow ex wheelset.
