I went at the weekend and absolutely loved it. Might not be your cup of tea if you don’t like leaving the ground, but as long as you are happy to give jumping a go then this is a great place to improve. The 4X track was an eye opener for me, watching a couple of locals going down it really illustrated how much I have to learn. However…

The atmosphere was very relaxed and I was quite happy with giving it all a go, 4X, dual slalom, dirt jumps, the DH runs. Great fun and can’t wait to go back, so many thanks to the small club that are running the place and doing a sterling job. Highly recommended!

So stevede or ace, how big is this drop then? Anyone got a link to a youtube vid?

What does 1% out mean? What would 100% out mean?!

stevede – that drop has made you practically famous!

Not to worry, looking at them I don’t think they’d sit well together, the M660s are much straighter looking if that makes any sense.

patriotpro – I’ve got some M660 slx cranks, will your 24/38 rings fit them? I think I read somewhere about the newer shimano cranks having more material on the ring below the mount holes, causing compatibility issues?

Schwalbes broke all the spoons in the house until I realised it was an exercise in futility

Of course, there was once a problem with schwalbe tyres and stans rim

Kenda SB8s were never, ever going to fit, Schwalbe’s neither

    Ditto Schwalbes

I don’t get it, I’ve fitted and refitted a Schwalbe Hans Dampf, Rocket Ron, Racing Ralph, Sammy Slick as well as Conti mountain king 2 (Flow Ex rims) no bother and without needing tyre levers.

    9spd works fine.

Lowers are silly expensive. If you’re going to write off the forks then I’d say yes, strip them for what ever bits you can sell and buy some new ones.

Am I right in thinking the free ride stuff, north shore etc has disappeared due to insurance problems?

I’ll do it for you if you can’t find anyone local, you just pay the postage. Obviously no guarantees provided what so ever etc etc!

Ben Cooper is right, both the mounts are in compression so the crack may not be the end of the world. I’d try a bodge before forking out for new lowers.

Mosey, that sucks. The crack in your bottom mount does look worrying. The course of action I suggest for you would be as follows (similar to that already suggested but with a couple of important distinctions)

Run a 5.2mm drill all the way through the mount. It looks in the last photo like you should be able to drill right out the other side of the mount, which I would do if possible but your aim should be to get atleast 4 or 5mm past where the crack has occurred. Don’t use a 5.5mm drill, this would be good if you were using a fine pitch thread but the threads are standard pitch and a 5.5 will result in a very weak thread.

Run an M6 tap into the hole you have just made deeper.

Get a bolt is exactly the correct length, leaving around 1mm clearance at the bottom of your new deeper hole (or ideally you have been able to drill right through the mount in which case just get a bolt that just protrudes).

If you do this you will be bolting into at least 4/5mm of good thread, beyond where the crack has started which should reduce the stress on the crack and with luck, your fork will hold together just fine.

Obviously, then check the forks every time you ride. Good luck whatever you choose to do.

Full length outers nearly caught me out too! Got them just before the bike shop closed! Mosey that’s good news, I’m happy for you and pleased that we get to see your bike built up! Looks great :)

Sorry to hear that Mosey. Hope it all turns out ok in the end.

Mucky Nutz keeps mud off your stanchions and for that reason alone is a win.

I’m sure it’ll be fine. As will whacking the headset in with a bit of wood and a mallet. Good luck!

Good recommendation on the folding halfrauds bracket. Got them up in very little time and very pleased with them.

Couldn’t be bothered to read all the replies, or even the whole of the original post but…
Don’t be ridiculous, you are on a bicycle and you rode into a hole in the road. You live in England, this is to be expected. You have my sympathies, it must suck for sure but you were definitely doing something wrong. Tailgating?
    Get well soon.

Thanks all. Have just acquired some from Halfrauds. Now where did I leave my 10mm masonry bit?

Thanks for the replies everyone. People with the fold up one, is it long enough for a bike with wide bars? I have 750mm bars at the moment.

I should have said that I need something to store just one bike, since it’ll be going in a corridor and can’t jut out too far.

Buzz – sound like a whole heap of trouble, maybe you were just unlucky though. If I didn’t need 150mm drop I’d certainly put up with a loopy cable reverb and save a whole wedge of cash.

I like the look of that! I’m surprised this is the first I’ve heard of it. I must have my head in the sand.

Replacing the internal string doesn’t look like an insurmountable task. If this is how they tend to go I could probably live with it.

What are the issues with the Lev as you see it Northwind?

I’m considering one as I really need 150 drop and don’t have internal cable routing.

Stif have them on their website to pre-order. Quite a bit more pricey than the south koreans, americans or germans though.

Winch – what make are the skewers you’re using – is that a 10mm thru rear?

Front is the Syntace that comes with the forks.

SS rear skewer link, with the appropriate hub adaptor.

SLX clutch mech ordered. Annoyed that I need a new one just after ribble did such a good deal on them, typical! Can’t win them all.
