but every time I jump on it, it just feels so slow, and dead

Which bike are you referring to here, the Inbred or the Genesis? If it’s the Genesis I assume it’s the Core?

It might be good to figure out what it is about your current bike that makes it feel “slow and dead” before shelling out for a new frame. Is it not very lively in the corners or just difficult to pedal up to speed?

@core – My mate has an evo 2 and he likes it. It’s certainly a nice frame with some quality touches, I particularly like the bulged seat tube. The only reservation I have is the 1/8th head tube as it limits fork choice. Compared to a core, well it’s 4 degrees slacker to start with.

Sounds like you now know what it’s like to fall within a saccade, or rather be catapulted out of a saccade and over someones bonnet. Glad you’re ok and hope all the post accident stuff goes smoothly.

Bit of a thread hijack apologies, but as a quick aside, why is it that the majority of minion’s only appear to be available in wire bead?

I haven’t ridden the chase in maybe 6 weeks now, are these pebbles a recent addition to help keep the trail from falling apart? I’ve never felt there was a lack of grip on upper or lower cliff before.

My first Peaks Pootle™ and it was a right laugh. Highlights for me were:

    – The kid on the cyclocross bike ably negotiating potato sized rocks. Says it all really.

    – The nutter on the BFe who rode to the poodle (off road) from Manchester, stomped up every climb and was looking at ~100km that day by the time he’d ridden back home in the dark. Crazylegs perhaps?

Onzadog for waiting and holding the last gate until I came through with stripeminister at the very back of the pack after fixing a puncture on the last descent. Thanks Onza!

I tip my hat to all of you.

It was great to get a guided tour of some of the riding around Edale. I’ll certainly be back now i know how much there is to explore there. All the people who live locally are lucky to have that stuff on your doorstep. The descent down to the bridge was probably my favourite bit of riding, but then again all of the descents had something about them.

Love Tubs – Hello I’m winch (aka “dreadlock wheelie man”!!) I was trying to keep the wheelies under control because apparently it makes me a show off, just couldn’t resist that one though. Thanks for the banter on the bridge and for laughing at my loaf of bread.

Nice one Pook and all the others who helped out. Everyone looked to be having a good time and I for one can’t wait for the next poodle.

I’ve been running 160mm on my dialled alpine for a few months now and have come to the same conclusion as many others, it’s just a bit too much. Previously I ran 130m on a Soul and dive was far less of an issue. Next step is trying the Slants on my alpine at 140mm, until then I’m just running them hard so that I only get full travel when something has gone very wrong!

For me, fork travel was something I had to try for myself before making a decision. I suspect many people are the same but it does seem that most eventually arrive at the same conclusion.

I have a new hans damp just the same. It is a tyre defect, I tried every trick to get it to seat differently.

    Certainly wouldn’t sell it on.

On a hardtail your legs are your suspension. Having it that low also gets it out of the way when you’re in the air.

Thanks for the link jam bo. Looks rudimentary!

Thisisnotaspoon – I ride an 18″ dialled alpine and am 6’2″. I don’t know about slopestyle tricks but I ride xc and dh on my bike but really like to have the saddle slammed for the later. Those couple of inches would make a big difference!

    Regarding rim “strength”:

I’m not convinced that the construction of one rim makes it significantly more resistant to “dings” than another. Sure, some rims have more material in them than others but I doubt the difference is significant once an impact of the necessary magnitude to do damage occurs. Alloys used also vary but again I’m doubtful the differences in compressive strength are significant.

I’d consider that to reduce “rim dinging” you should heed chiefgrooveguru’s advice regarding wider rims:

with the same tyre and pressure it’ll be less prone to bottoming out thanks to the better sidewall shape and greater air volume

Choosing tyres with a decent thickness sidewall, particularly at the area just above the bead should help absorb some of the energy from an impact and also give the best chance of avoiding pinch flatting your tubeless tyre.

Obviously the most important factor in avoiding rim damage is finding the right tyre pressure, which will always be a compromise.

Golddigger – I’d go with the Flox Ex’s on anything but a race bike for the above reasons and to avoid rolling/burping during hard cornering. You sound more XC orientated than I seem to be at the moment which perhaps explains why you’re sticking with relatively narrow tyres. If you decide you want to bias your bike a little more towards

    bombing it downhill

…then I think you could do worse than to invest in some wider tyres as well (assuming they’ll fit in the back of your bike).

Disclaimer – I have been drinking.

For me they could do with a little more compression damping, not less. I wouldn’t agree that they are harsh in the first part of their travel. At recommended pressure mine are very plush. I just get through the travel a bit more easily than I’d like. I’d like them to be a little less linear/more progressive. I guess this is personal preference since my view seems to be at odds with the majority. All said though, still a great fork.

I’m running them on my Dialled Alpine which I use for a bit of everything, but certainly favour the more steep and rough side of what people usually ride on a hardtail. In short they get a bit of a hammering.

Depending on the terrain, I find I need to run the recommended pressures or even a bit higher to give enough support. This does affect the small bump compliance but not intolerably so. Damping wise I’d put them on a par with an RLT Rev. I’m not convinced the “mid valve” is doing a lot for me, but I’m 95kg’s. Lighter guys may find it helps keep the fork up.

I have got the air pressure right (15 psi less than recommended).

I can’t imagine running the pressure so low, even at 10 psi below recommended I can bottom the thing out just by pressing down on the front end.

Stiffness wise they are lots better than Revs. In my opinion you’d not be far wrong to think of them as a beefed up RLT Rev. I’m pretty happy with them overall, but can’t help but wonder if the Pikes would have been worth the extra. Maybe I’m just fussy though!

jambon, does a 1.5kg frame and a 2.6kg fork not make for a front heavy feeling bike?

Dialled make the Alpine, which as the name suggests really comes into it’s own when it gets steep and rough. It’s my only mountain bike, I use it for everything and it takes it all in it’s stride.

You have taken 20% off the entire length of the fork! You need 20% off the travel of the fork. ie. 545-(0.2*160)=513

I massively enjoyed my first trip to Aston a few weeks ago (on a hardtail). Surface to air is brilliant, some of the drops might be a bit much for some mind 8) This was on a dry day.
