Personal device or work? Windows or Mac? What does your contract, or more likely your IT Use Policy say about surveillance?

For Uppsala, trains run from Central Station to Uppsala Central about three times an hour and cost about 120kr one way per person. Choose Mälartåg and you should get a fast train (only four stops) and a chance to sit on the top deck and see a bit of the countryside.

Uppsala has a castle, a cathedral and some really nice botanic gardens. Ovandals is good for fika, Domtrappkällaren good for food with a nice tap room (Domkraft) right next door. And another down the road actually (Taps beer). Not sure you can walk to Gamla Uppsala and see the burial mounds, but about 100% sure a bus will go past it.

Can you guess Uppsala is my home town?

No chains for fika, always go for the independents! It’s not that I had a list of the best places to buy kanelbullar when I was working in town. No, not at all…

For getting around, you always have the option of taking one of the electric scooters. Yes, they are satan’s own playthings, but they are handy in town and the ability to leave them (somewhere respectful and tidy), walk for a bit and then find a couple more is very handy. Lime, Voi, Bolt, etc have apps and are easy enough to register with.

I think the opera is closed for renovations btw, so that would be off the suggestion list.

Dammit. Ok, could not let it lie…

Haga Bageri: Kungsholmen – Fleminggatan 107
    Bullar & Bröd: Östermalm – Valhallavägen 65
Ett Bageri: Östermalm – Jungfrugatan 70
    Ilcaffe: Kungsholmen – Bergsgatan 17

For lunch, try Reggev if you like hummus. Döbelsgatan 51 or on Söder at Ringvägen 145

Fotografiska also has a Shepherd Fairey exhibition on at the moment. I am going next week and, if it’s good I will let you know.

Ah, Stockholm. You’ll arrive and hate it, but by the end of the trip you will love it. (Göteborgs skämt, sorry).

Mert’s covered some of the highlights and Djurgården hols Vasa, Skansen and Abba. Budget a day for that at least and a lot of standing up, or break it into two and take it a bit more easy. Ferries run from Slussen to Gröna Lund and will drop you at the entrance to Skansen and Abba and only a short walk from Vasa. You can then hang out at the Viking Museum and have lunch/food at the Spirits museum.

Going on a tour of the islands and canals is quite fun and many leave from Slussen or Strandvägen (so basically in the middle of town). They are a bit touristy, but you learn a bit about the city and from a strange angle.

There are a lot of museums to visit, more than you could visit in a week. Subway is a good bet for getting around though and will go to about most places that are not the smaller islands. Don’t drive, parking will be a nightmare. If you are landing at Arlanda, just get the bus (Flygbussarna/Flix) or take any train from the station under the airport. Then just take the subway to where you are staying. If you are flying in to Västerås: Bus… Trains run often from Västerås, but you’ll need a taxi to get to the station from Hässlö (the airport).

If you drink, I know some places. Same with food. Drop me a PM if you are interested. Just be prepared for alcohol to be more expensive and unavailable outside of System Bolaget.

    @binners Dunno what you mean.

It was a film that made me incredibly eager to visit Vietnam, something I managed to do in 2001. I made a point of visiting the post office in Saigon you can see after Capt. Willard looks through the blinds after the opening dos of The Doors.

I’d like to have visited more of the country than just the touristy bits. I was out-voted though.

Apocalypse Now. I think I was 15 and we watched the helicopter attack scene during a history lesson. It stunned me. Then I watched the rest of the film when I could and was amazed at it. I still think it is excellent, certainly one of the top 5 films I have.

A cup of decent coffee first thing in the morning. No bad coffee, not “ok” coffee, _good_ coffee.

If you’ve had a bad night’s sleep, it will make you feel better. If you are hungover, it will help you get back in the fight. If you just like coffee, it will reaffirm your like of coffee.

Wow! That’s crazy. Mind you, I had a similar thing happen to me on a pair of bindings on my wakeboard when I left it in my car at work one day. It wasn’t even as hot as where you are.

I keep seeing adverts for “Send-Cut-Send” on YouTube thanks to some of the follows I have, but there may be an EU equivalent that could do a whole bike’s worth of parts. I think I have seen one…

    Found it! Xometry: https://xometry.eu/en/laser-cutting/

Ok, EU-based, but may do the UK.

What in the hell did I just waste electrons looking at? Really? A boat-trike? Sorry, but if ever I have seen a solution looking for a problem it is that.

Dear gods, sorry, but that has triggered me a bit. I just really don’t see how that is anything other than a really, really niche plaything for people that have far too much money. I’d guess that, for the price of one of those you could buy a decent bike and a boat and rent a berth somewhere until you started hating the boat maintenance.

I made/finished a car port and installed some bike hangers in the corner. The frame and groundwork was originally done last year by my ex and I finally finished it this summer (roof supports, roof, side supports, side panel, paint). I only have to paint and nail up about 35 strips of läkt to make the sides look the same as the shed and then learn how to park so that the van actually fits all the way in it.

And then build an extension for wood storage.

And then build an extended wall and rof for the entrance to the shed.

    Ok, not very finished.

Yup, have a v2 model and it is perfectly good for most prototyping. I think the last thing I made was a pair of brackets to allow me to hang up my old Kampus wakeskate on the wall in the lounge.

I need to do some more designing for another project soon and have just flashed my printer with the latest community firmware. Apparently it has more tuning functions so is betterer.

Wow! A real blast from the past… I have not been that far north for a looooong time. I think my last visit to Cape Wrath/Kinlochbervie was in the very early 80’s, but I remember it being a wonderful place. Friends of the family ran the hotel there and it was arguably the best week of holiday I had before I bought my own car.

I have a 5.11 daysack that I have used for the last 10 years for this purpose. I think it’s the Rush24. It has a space for a 15″ laptop, you can open out the main flap thing and fit folded up shirts. Honestly, I think it is too fussy with pockets on the front; I’d rather swap the many small ones outside for a couple of bigger ones, but it works for me when I need to take the bike in for work.

Exactly that ^^^. My last pair of steelies were more expensive than the budget I was allowed and were still not that comfortable when my [clown-sized] feet kept bumping into the toecap. I did a lot of walking in mine and it was always uncomfortable.

I saw in the local builders’ merchants that (I think) Vans do a safety trainer. I would buy them if I could be sure they did a size 47/48.

The inclusion of the Prometheus stuff was odd. I thought that even Ridley Scott had said that Prometheus was an alternate timeline/universe, so the inclusion by Ash/Rook of that bit was odd to say the least. It also bugs me that, if that is now true, why is ll the tech in Alien/Romulus/Aliens/Alien3 so shit and old compared to the holographic loveliness of Prometheus/Covenant?

One point my friend brought up was that, compared to Alien, Romulus seemed hectic. Alin had a single thread that tied te whole film together, building slowly to the finale with flashes of events that were all part of the build. Romulus had more, more distinct events that made the whole film feel like someone had tried to cram too much into a single film. I agree that this made it seem hurried and a little chaotic, but would just the “Go to station, get in trouble, leave station” part have made a compelling film on its own, with a second film expanding on the [cut] bit about the baby?

The fan service stuff seems to be ‘the thing’ now for classic IP. I dislike it, but it does make the film happen I guess. A shame it stifles really innovative creative writing and screenplay (or seems to).

    Well, saw it.

I have to say that I think the cinema experience has really changed since I last went about 8 years ago. This was a “luxe” screen, but even then I did not expect so few seats with such large leg room and the reclining backs & footrests. So, for that alone, nice!

Film-wise: It’s an Aliens film. I love the aesthete of it, the dirt, the old/new technology, the sound design, the music. Many nods to the original two/three films (maybe a bit too much fanfic nodding) and I approve of the casting choice of essentially unknown actors, but it does make the film seem a bit “young adult” and, if I am honest, for an environment where people are allegedly indentured and worked to death, they are a bit clean and healthy.

BUTT… It’s not a bad film. I enjoyed it despite the things that made me doubt the reality of the Alien universe in some places (timelines, etc). Overall, worth a watch. I also ate enough pic n’ mix to nearly go into diabetic shock

I’m actually more surprised that this did not descend more into “Spliter”/”Brother”name calling after my sorting into House DeWalt!

I do wonder (like I normally do after buying expensive things) if I made the right choice, but I used them both last night and on Monday and they really are a league above the old AEG drill and feel on par to the Milwaukee equivalents that used to be at home. Building work on the carport with them is way easier than without them, so I am actually happier now than I was when choosing.

On the Ryobi thing… The battery was one thing that put me off them. It might make the tools slightly shorter overall than DeWalt, but I am fine with that.

My friends in the US though… Dear gods! The tribalism even at the DIY level is crazy.

I ticked off skydiving from the list about 8 years ago now (and have since done about 671 jumps), but the one thing that I really wanted to accomplish with my life just seems to keep avoiding me.

    Maybe one day…

To OP, yes. I can also visualise things based on touch (sometimes) and from photos/maps. It the main way I have for “seeing” parts of cars when I am taking them apart and fixing them (of “fixing” them).

Te map thing is super-handy if I am out walking. Beig able to relate what I have seen to how the ground is supposed to look is really handy.

That’s what them want you to think.

Just given the tools their first outing. Damn it is nice to have new tools that work properly! Second side of the car port is not railed up and the panels for it are waiting to be cut to length and mounted up. I stopped for the evening because a) tired and b) mosquitos.

I can confirm that I will be seeing this film on the coming Wednesday. My friends and I are now discussing the pros and cons of iMax vs. normal screen. It looks like the more comfy seats in the normal screen is winning right now.

Went past a biiiiig version of our B&Q on Sunday and spent money. I am now in House DeWalt. Price for a drill driver and a drill/screwdriver, two 5.0Ah batteries and a charger was the same as Bosch Blue and about 1000kr more than Ryobi, but the tools looked/felt better and the batteries were bigger than those offered by Ryobi.

Overall, I feel happy with my choice.

True. I once had a cab ride to Heathrow from a Polish driver that had been in the UK since he left (very quickly as it turned out) when the Soviets were clamping down heavily on the Solidarity movement. The guy was very UKIP and anti-immigrant, mainly because he thought that the new generation arriving just did not contribute anything to society.

I was, well, a bit shocked.

@Sandwich Ah yes, Pump Street Bakery. My mother visits there a lot on dog walks and sends me photos of the teas she has had there. For me though, Orford will always be the place I used to buy smoked eels and other delicious smoked treats.

Has Wickham Market upped its game? I can’t remember the last time I went there by choice outside of visiting friends or going to the restaurant that the New Peach Bower replaced. My misspent youth meant I was mostly just hanging around the Pettistree Greyhound playing pool.

The shortbread is too easy for people to get wrong imho. Sometimes it is too crumbly and the whole thing falls apart, sometimes too buttery and then it tastes wrong. I can’t fault the concept but, like carrot cake, it’s too easy to mess with something and make it worse than it should be.

FWIW, I would hoover the squares until I had some sort of diabetic shock to them, but I think there are better things to have with an organic, fairtrade flat white.

This ^^^ times many. If you cn find what went wrong, get the spares. I miss my Dualit and would be lost without a toaster. THe one I have is a cheapy from the Tesco equivalent here, but just keeps working, so it keeps getting used.

I think I use it more than anything else to make lunch, which says a lot about how bad I am at eating lunch.

Pah! My place normally oes a “meet the new person” post on the Intranet with a photo, happens for everyone except… I started at the beginning of the pandemic and boss decided it was probably unwise for me to have such a post announcing me to the world. Four years lter and I still have to start presentaitons with a “Who am I?” slide because people don’t know I exist.

When I was weight training/crossfitting _a LOT_ I used it to try and both aid recovery and get assistance in building muscle. I took it with protein/BCAA supplements. I got mine from MyProtein, the batch tested version. If you don’t care about the (small) risk of failing a drugs test, the normal sort is cheaper.

Did it work? Maybe. I know that I lost a lot of weight and muscle when I moved and stopped training (and stopped needing/taking the supplements), so maybe it helped.
