Thanks amt, not done anything like this event before, so this may sound like a daft question, but can the route be followed all the way without referring to a map / gpx file?

No, there is a map online now, GPX now available (see thread title). It does go down Dowies, and looking at it again, I think it’ll be the Full Boar, and Wye Boar entrants who do it, so probably most of the field. Not that I’m too bothered, just making conversation really!

Another vote for plastic Nukeproof jobbies – Electrons. Can be had for between 25 and 35 quid depending on which colour you want. Great compromise of weight, grip, toughness, size and cost

Jeez Solo, believe it or not it is possible for people to lose weight by burning more calories than they take in. All the OP stated was that was how he achieved it. You are obviously very sensitive on the matter for whatever reasons, and took it personally, but there’s no need to be such a tool about it.

Great work OP, I have lost a total of 4 stone over a few years with your same miracle weight-loss regime.

How do you express a really sarcastic sharp intake of breath on an internet forum?

Hmmm, my thoughts – you accepted a fair offer from someone and were happy to do so at that price. Regardless of who is coming knocking, you should do the right thing and proceed with the first accepted offer.

Confirmation that FoD was rammed yesterday. Unbelievably so. Luckily off-piste was as quiet as ever, and the trails over in Staunton woods were fan-bl88dy-tastic. Best ride in months

I have similar thoughts about bigger jumps and drops. I am happy doing smaller jumps and drops but ask myself how do I progress to bigger stuff? The answer unfortunately is always grow a bigger pair. I know I can do it, and have the ability to do it, but my swingers just ain’t big enough! I bet deep down you know you can jump those steps, it’s just a case of getting over your inhibitions and having the confidence to commit yourself. Wish I knew how! I need psychological training I reckon

Good thing about FoD wrecker is the moment you go off-piste, it’s quiet as hell and you might as well be in a different forest to everyone else

Pedalabikeaway in FoD will be absolutely rammed all weekend. It gets crazy busy there, even in winter. There’s loads of other local picnic sites around though that are not only free to park, but a stones throw from the trails. Not that I’m begrudging the Forestry Commission their £3.50, but if there’s simply nowhere to park, and people sat everywhere in cars waiting for spaces to appear, what can you do!?

£800 doesn’t seem too bad to me. When you compare to something like an ASR5 alloy, its nearly half the price for arguably a better bit of kit. Before the ASR5 supporters jump in, I’ve got one and love it, but I feel the Stumpy would be a better all-rounder

PS. Tomaso – worst “Here’s mine” photo ever! :D (to clarify, the photo that is, not the bike, the bike’s great)

Amphibian I honestly think people make too much of the whole stem length thing. Okay if you went from 110 to 30 it would be very noticeable, but if you’re happy and comfy with a 90 I don’t think dropping to 70 is going to make that much difference to the handling. I’m on a 70 coz that’s what I had left from my last bike. When I’m a little more flush though I’m going to get a 90, see if it’s more comfortable

    Fancy a trial swap!? :D

Have you found out how much a church will generally charge for a wedding yet out of interest?

Yep, its not on the Yeti website any more.

Bit of a PSA for the OP now…

    http://www.silverfish-uk.com/Clearance

ASR5 carbon in medium and large for about the same price as an alloy.

FWIW I’m 6’1 on a large with 70mm stem. If anything its a little short, but I’m all arms and torso. A 90mm stem would probably make it perfect.

A sound counter-argument flaps. Anyway one way or another you know how you feel about her which at the end of the day is all that counts. I’m just such a staunch opponent of religion that I couldn’t bring myself to rise above it.

We did ours (week before last as it happens) for £2800. That included Register Office wedding, reception at really nice old hotel, rings, her dress, my suit, flowers, cake, table decorations and favours, Range Rover Sport hire for the weekend and other little bits and bobs. Okay only 30 people in total, but still a good price. We didn’t bother with a photographer, just got friends and family to take snaps/film all day and send them to us on CD after. We have ended up with hundreds of great photos to chose from and are creating our own wedding album.

On the subject of church weddings when not being religious. I couldn’t have done it even if Mrs Wilko wanted to. Reason being that if you swear by god for your vows etc and you don’t even believe in him/her/it then it makes a bit of a mockery of the whole marriage. Just my two pence!

Steve – female cyclists may look good in their lycra, but that doesn’t make cycling sexy or cool :-) Bit like swimming!

I once had a fumble with a girl after falling off a Grifter when I was about 10 if that counts. Only as she helped me get up though and I accidentally pulled her skirt down.

Much as I hate to admit it though, cycling is neither sexy or cool IMO

No, he says he mostly rides road and light trails and has a hardtail for that. He doesn’t state what he’s ridden the Blur on

Reckon you might be jumping to conclusions there, although I might be wrong

Maybe he does a bit of buying and selling? Doesn’t mean its hot though

FoD is a great option, you get a lot of runs in, and there’s lots of marked DH’s, together with a lot of unmarked stuff too. The Uplift service is great too, friendly driver, riders always seem friendly and helpful too (obviously that’s down to who is booked tho) if you’re new to the DH side of things.

Not sure about new trails, but definitely brilliant conditions. Did a big off-piste loop on Sunday and the only wet bits were those stagnant puddles on Dowies 2/Son of Dowies/whatever its called.

On a side note when I turned up at PBA at 08:45, they’d just discovered they’d been broken into on Sat night. 6 bikes nicked from the workshop including my mates Heckler.

I went and parked up the road at the picnic site after, that place is a serious crime hotspot at the moment

At the risk of sounding like a cheesy magazine review, a Yeti ASR5 is light, responsive and flickable. Pedals well (there is a little pedal bob, but not much) and accelerates fast for a full suss and corners incredibly well.

Obviously as I’m singing it’s praises that means I have one. Mine has 140mm forks, and it feels great on steeper, more technical stuff. Great fun to ride and I seem to gun it absolutely everywhere now, which is fine for fitness, but not so good for my creaking knees

Fair enough, you’re right, it should be able to cope with the set-up it was designed for. I guess that’s where they went wrong, looking at the frame design and mounting arrangement you can see how a large force is going to be created under braking on the exact part of the frame that’s cracked. Coupled with any lateral force from the side to side movement of caliper and pistons

560 and 460 still seems steep – more “cost” than cost I reckon. Which dealer have you spoken to about it?

    wilko1999

An interesting point Joe, that looks like it might be a 203mm rotor (OP please correct me if I’m wrong). The adaptor puts the caliper mounting bolts a long way from the frame mounts. The top one in particular is going to create a huge amount of force/leverage on the frame mounts under braking

Cheers pinetree, I’ve already got one and love it, was just wondering if there’s a potential weak point there. Mine’s a 2012 so should be okay anyway. Maybe I’ll stop using the rear brake just to be safe…

Fox Flux for me, not because I’m hardcore, simply because I like the idea of having a bit more of my head protected. All MTB helmets look ridiculous if you ask me anyway. I’ve not seen one design I really like to be fair. I applaud Urge for doing something different, but I still don’t like them much. BMX helmets look okay though.

I got married Friday just gone, had a fantastic day, never thought I’d enjoy my wedding so much!

Anyway, seriously, just Google ‘Grooms Speech’ there is an almost never-ending ream of useful information and ideas, loads of examples submitted by grooms etc. You don’t need to copy, but it’ll give you some ideas and might help you to include some good things that you wouldn’t have otherwise thought of

I didn’t write my speech until 2 days before the wedding as I’d originally planned to make it up as I went along. I’m glad I did prepare one though, it went well if I do say so myself.

Oh, and a double Jack Daniels with my Weetabix certainly helped get the day going :D

These ‘of the year’ tests just crack me up. They now just remind me of Harry Hill and his comedy ‘of the week’ sketches – like ‘Over-ambitious cucumber fold-over of the week’ (check it out on youtube) and therefore I can’t take them seriously any more.

Like we’ve all been sat here on the edge of our seats, biting our nails awaiting the outcome of a test conducted by a group of riders, probably not that different to a lot of us on here, to see what their opinion is of a selection of bikes that they deem worthy of entering the competition. The test is tosh, ignore it and buy the bike that looks the best, they’re all good these days.
