I grew up on Rodborough Avenue, Stroud almost right opposite Reverend Awdry’s house. I certainly don’t remember him as a racist, sexist dictator. He had a brilliant train set, once a year he would open up his house to the kids on the street to go and have a go with it. Oh, and he had an Austin Maestro that he couldn’t change gear in and would drive for miles revving it out in first.

    EDIT: no pun intended :D

I had to look up the exact quote, but Rimmers c*cked up space corps directive quotes always cracked me up :-)

Rimmer: In which case we can remove him from duty as per Space Corps Directive 196156.
Kryten: 196156? Any officer caught sniffing the saddle of the exercise bicycle in the women’s gym will be discharged without trial? Hmm. I’m sorry, sir, that doesn’t quite get to the nub of the matter for me

As did Krytens ‘that reminds me of an old Android proverb, 0011110000011100000 etc’

Anyone who describes their bike as a weapon should technically name it Charlene.

My 3yr old daughter has a Stomp Stompee, its great, she loves it and loves pulling comedy sideways skids with the brake. Can’t wait until my kamikaze 8 month old son is big enough to use it. Less than half the price of a Rothan, Scoot or Hotwalk too on eBay.

Have a look through here, might be of some use:

I didn’t think of looking for the fitting instructions (seems blindingly obvious now though, d’oh). When fitting mine I did a Haro 500.1 Google image search and copied what I saw. The brake works (just  ) and doesn’t rub the seatstay so it’ll do for now!

Happens every time I go out on my BMX :D

EDIT “going back in time” that is, as opposed to conning my Mum into thinking I wear a helmet

Here it is. There’s about a 4mm gap between the cable and the seatstay. I think its just enough to clear when braking. It’s difficult to see the gap in the photo though:

I’ll be honest though, I’d never installed a brake like that before, so I’m not even sure I’ve done it correctly :?

EDIT: Grr don’t know why its rotated the photo, it’s the right way round in Photobucket!

Zilog I managed to set up my rear brake so that it doesn’t rub on the seat tube (I think…) It is close admittedly. I have it here with me at work, think I’ll just double-check at lunchtime that it really isn’t rubbing now that you’ve said that!

Not sure what size/length you need, but they have some here: (other sizes available on that site too)

Odd that ain’t it. I’m forever wondering what to fit next to my MTBs. On the BMX I just want to learn how to ride it well. Not even slightly interested in changing anything.

Ah okay, was going to suggest trying out Rush Indoor Skatepark in Stroud but probably a bit out of your range

Nice one, I like the yellow, makes my black one look a bit drab

Just learnt to 180 bunny hop and flip back round, pretty basic stuff I guess, but felt great when I got the hang of it :-)

    Where are you based?

Right opposite Asda in Kingsway, Gloucester. The contractors have completed the track, but it’s still surrounded by a massive metal fence as they haven’t finished the community centre yet that’s right next to it.

What did you go for in the end? Didn’t see which one you’d ordered. I only fitted the rear brake to start with, but it was absolutely dreadful so I fitted the front brake to get some stopping power. I’m nearly 40, just learning to BMX, I couldn’t give a stuff if all the kids are going round with a maximum of one brake fitted!

Yeah I was a little concerned by all the talk of them being twitchy, but I needn’t have been. You get used to it after about 1 go!

Not sure about your chain though. Sounds to me like you were unlucky.

Amazing fun, I can’t get out on mine enough. There’s a brand new proper old-skool BMX track opening 5 minutes ride from my office, I’m gonna be there every lunch time I reckon!

One of the least inspiring bike releases ever IMO can’t put my finger on why though

My BMI is 26.5 apparently, not that I really care. I’m 6’1 and 14 stone 4. What I’m amazed at is that the NHS calculator reckons my healthy weight range is 9st 14 to 13st 7. I can tell you now at 9st 14 I would look seriously ill, like knocking on deaths door ill. Ridiculous

Regardless of the quality of the ‘phones, the advert is seriously starting to grate my helmetdale now. Especially as I’m listening to some fairly quiet, relaxing music on my headphones. And I can never mute it in time before the ‘AAAH-AH’ blasts out or whatever it is. Sort it out please!

The amount we care about what others think varies greatly, no doubt. I’m at the end of the scale where I largely don’t care, but I can’t deny feeling a bit self-conscious about my body when at the swimming pool in only my swimming shorts, for example. I do believe though that there are individuals out there that truly don’t care at all about what others think

So someone who wears cheap clothes and doesn’t wear make-up or have a fancy ‘do is trying to project an ‘I don’t care what you think’ image? Perhaps they’re not trying to project anything, they just have more important things to worry about?

He’s not necessarily right as such, that’s his view, but to a point I agree I guess having thought about it. Although I think the level of how much we care varies greatly. Some people just don’t care enough to want to impress others with make-up, nice clothes, clean cars etc

I wear cheap-a$$ clothes and my car only gets cleaned when it goes in for a service. Mrs Wilko cleans the windows, as long as I can still see through them they’re fine in my book

That’s the point though I think, they don’t have to. Anyone, male or female, comfortable in their own skin that doesn’t care what others think wouldn’t feel the need to try and improve their appearance.

Its the 9 mile loop they use for the FoD Enduro race every September. There’s a GPX of it halfway down here:

    http://www.fodmtb.com/trails/4584608849

It shares about 1/2 mile with Verderers, but other than that its a completely separate loop of mostly singletrack, classic FoD stuff. Its not marked though (only on race day), so you’ll either have to feel your way round or use the GPX.

EDIT: Beaten to the punch by Vern

I’ve still got a 1987 Raleigh Pursuit that I’ve had from brand new complete with original receipt of sale. Really? How incredibly interesting Wilko

Actually nothing. They are great for the money and never missed a beat. I bought them when I needed a new pair and money was very tight. If I’ve got the money though I prefer to ride on Vaults.

Most of the climbs you should be okay, a couple of them are steep and loose though, albeit quite short, that might be a struggle, especially if it’s wet. Rigid or hardtail? Great loop by the way.

My own view though having ridden it plenty of times is that I’d much prefer to have some sort of gearage and at least front suspension too, just because its more fun that way. YMMV!

For information – my Haro required a lot of assembly when it turned up. If you’re intending on using brakes, be prepared to have to fit them, and they’re a bit of a fiddle :-)

I’d say Whitemead too. Fountain Inn nearby is pretty good and there’s a bike shop just round the corner. Oh, and it’s right smack bang in the middle of miles of cracking unofficial trails. And a short cycle-path ride to the trail centre if you prefer that sort of thing.

I’m a self-confessed DMR flat pedal fan-boy. Apart from one pair of Nukeproof Electrons I’ve always used either V8s, V12s and now Vaults. Ubyk have Vaults for £72, which is quite a bit over budget but they’re brilliant. But they also have the new low profile V12s for £45. For under £50 thats where my money would go.

zilog – ordered on the Monday morning, arrived Wednesday of the following week. As it was in stock I would have expected better really. What you going for out of interest?

I ordered an in-stock BMX from them a month or so ago. To sum up the experience in one sentence – slow delivery, poor communications but very cheap BMX.

“he’s never truly admitted he was wrong or apologised”

^this is what really grates my helmetdale. Something so blatantly obvious in all instances with clear video evidence. Not even the decency to apologise. I hope he proves me wrong on this occasion but he seems to think he is bigger than the game and can just do as he pleases.
