    My condolences… ;)

I was up on Saturday morning. It was a real slog 'cos the snow was so wet. Singletrack by the scout camp was 75% ridable, but the traverse to the reservoir towards Clubbiedean was mostly pushing. Dropped the pressures to 20psi and then got some traction! The snow was jamming up the cassette, sticking to jockey wheels, and gathering round the hubs :o

I expect it's all nice and icy now – time for the ice tyres again :)

£100 tops for a job lot. May get more selling separately, and probably more likely folk will want the odd bit here or there.

Just like XFM is actually "Florence and the Machine or Kasabian FM". If it's not one of their tunes, it's some annoying ad for the job centre.

Pretty tough. I had to space my outer away from the middle because the protruding shift ramps were catching the chain in middle ring/small sprocket. But no big deal.

+1 for the screwdriver approach. Wrap some tape round the screwdriver before you go at it, so you don't scratch the crown.

This weekend or the next I think – somebody posted something about it the other day. Try google with site:singletrackworld.com?

I found using 7.5W (instead of 5W) in my Rebas made a big difference and stopped them blowing through the travel so quickly. I already use the pushloc as a real lockout for fireroad work.

Mind you can adjust the oil height a wee bit as well (+/- 5cc), according to the manual.

Doing the oil change is so easy that you might as well give it a go. No need to take the lowers off.

Chainsuck with new ring and old chain? Is the chain meshing properly with the new chainring?

Might also be worth seeing if the chain is catching on the outer ring / bash when you are in those small sprockets – I had that before when I fitted a Middleburn outer to my XTs; it was too close to the middle ring and the chain would catch on the shift ramps when in the small sprockets.

I suppose the best way to investigate is swap the old ring back on, see if there is still a problem; if not, it's some meshing or alignment issue with the new ring.

If the poppers are out, then the retention (RocLoc?) won't really work. Make sure the RocLoc is at its widest/loosest (they can jam sometimes), put the poppers in, and try and put the helmet on. If it won't go, it's too small.

Prefer my TR 1.95s to my old Mud Mads. Much more consistent traction.

The Mud Mads were good for making ghetto ice tyres, though. Every knobble had a pre-drilled hole in the top :) Must have been from the moulding or something.

@santac – I know why it won't load the pic of your Pronghorn; because it's bloody hideous! 10/10 for weird looks ;-)

Get some Rock Shox? Pikes or something? Pace stuff (which the DT ones are derived from) was never very reliable

There's a blanking plate on the back of the indicator. Just reuse one of the indicator screws to fit it.

You might be able to put an extra half turn on the spring within the MC damper – but it's a faff! (having spent a good hour last weekend putting a damper back together…)

Also check to see what sort of resistance the dial on the fork has. If you have too thick a spacer/washer under it, it struggles to return. I tried an o-ring instead of the white washer, and had the same problem of sluggish return to open.

The recession must have hit the spell checker and the proof reader this issue as well. The Tracy Moseley article was particularly bad. Content seemed OK to me though.

I've used Farmers in Marchmont (tyres, brakes), and the Marchmont Garage (Thirlestane Lane) (MOT, exhaust), and both were OK. No idea if they were "cheap", but they did OK work. Guy at Marchmont Garage did a free suspension check for me as well, when I though something felt funny. Farmers is now open 8-8 during the week, too, if you're in the library all day ;)

I didn't like the Citi Coachworks – cash in hand, no receipts type of stuff.

The bars look like something off a Raleigh Activator ;) Everything else looks suitably niche for STW. I do like the head badge, though :)

XT also £27 at CRC. The new XT ones are much better sealed than the 1st generation ones, IME.

Frame's only rated for ~105mm fork. But you'll be OK with 120s. Rebas for sure, or SIDs if they're cheap somewhere?

That totally sucks. I was another happy classifieds user, having bought some rims from Iain in the past.

Maybe, given the interesting collection of bikes and kit he owned, the "auction" should go on the front page instead of the classifieds?

I like Shimano chains. HG53 or HG73 for me, joined with the special pin, and carry a powerlink for on-trail breakages. Only time I snapped a chain (in ~15 years) was when I tried a SRAM one.

I use a chain cleaner rather than take it off all the time, though.

Just drink 1L of prune juice and park yourself on the bog for an hour with a good book (or STW ;-) = DIY irrigation.

Mind and put some bog roll in the fridge too. You'll be needing a lot of it.

Do a search – there was a thread yesterday about making your own. I just have; £5 of screws from B+Q, double layer of duct tape and a pair of old Mud Mads. Perfect for this morning's commute in Midlothian.

Shimano XT or XTR (or SLX? Only used the first two myself). XT and SLX have the new servowave levers for more power. I'm fine with my XTR levers and one finger, TBH.

Easy setup, easy pad changes, good power, easy to get spare hose and connectors, IME.

Aye, nice Chromag he was riding. First ride on it apparently.

Can only assume he was trying to jump the muddy pile on the LHS of the trail after the new sanitised top section.

You can buy sealing strips which do the same job as the sealant. no idea if they are good or mould resistant.

A real pain to remove fully. I use a sharp Stanley knife blade to scrape it all off, and a blunt scraper thing. The silicone eater didn't work for me – and it was 3x as much as the replacement sealant!

I'd just wash them, TBH. In the washing machine, or by hand in the bath.

You went to see a pot-bellied, almost-naked, mullet-toting guy prance around on a stage, and you're advertising this on STW?

    Brave man ;)

Bad show from CRC if that's what they're doing. I bought stuff from them last weekend with their "discount".

But anyway, if you can afford ~£300 for a chainset, what's a few tenners either way ;)
