The contents of those cylinders are a air/helium mix. Pure helium is often used in pressure testing for its ability to escape from the tightest of corners (so to speak). The throwh away jobbie you have will be empty after around 30 balloons have been filled and should'nt cause any great risks when cutting open.

About 4 years ago at a cylinder testing plant a BOC member of staff was cutting open a hydrogen cylinder wich had been purged with nitrogen and shot blasted, however small pockets of hydrogen remained in the coroded metal in the cylinder and during the cutting process his nads were very badly burned. The cylnders are cut open using an angle grinder around the neck area. Bit of compo and he was right as rain, apart from his nads.

I got pretty bored with this thread after a while(largely due to TJ demanding impossible answers, but I guess he knew that) , but a couple of points to add. There are 3 people onboard a bomber at any time who know exactly where the boat is and where its going to be (apart from changes due to having to get into a launch position, which aren't known until as necessary) also somebody mentioned that those onboard knew they were dead the minute they launched, well I can tell you having spent many years onboard I never felt that that was the case.

As for reasons for having trident? never gave it a thought it was just a job.

Jon, I actually to said to the girl on the phone 'what can you do?, any chance you could ring colly and KP and play the game again?'

Tongue in cheek of course, the reply was KP? as in nuts?

    'Whats the view based on?'

inflation figures out today show that cost of living is rising and any immediate interest rate rises would only stifle public spending further as everyone will have to spend more on mortgages etc and less on high st, new cars etc etc. Interest rate rises will cost business and public more and mean they grow more slowly(or don't grow at all) and spend less. Just look at recent bank finance results, low rates hasn't stopped them turning very big profits.

That, and a while selling mortgages for a bank.

EDIT Wrighty's right, deals get pulled quick so if you see something that works for you financaly don't hang around

Maybe a quarter to half of one percent before year out at the most.
Work out the fee cost in balance to the cost of a higher fixed rate with no fees. Sometimes the lower rate is worse when you figure out the cost of the fee, but then again if you can afford the fee now and need the lower rate for the next couple of years then dive in.

Well I was gonna watch the V+ recording when I got home from Dalbeattie today, however Virgin cut my service on Friday midnight the Barstewards. I told them to stop subscription on the 17th when the footie and cricket had ended!!!! The sods even billed me for next month, cos you pay in adavnce and then get a credit. Can't wait to ring them in the morning!

I'm with Virgin and I rang my brother in Tokyo couple of weekends back, £34.60 for 45mins! Rang up to 'have a quiet word'/'rant' and was told I could have it for 3p a min if I agreed to pay a £1.50 a month surcharge?
    It's like bloody Ryanair
I've had to knock the sky sports package on the head £21 a month, please! think of the bike bits that could amount to over a year.

Sometimes on this forum there can be a lot of arguing and petty backstabbing and pointless trolling, but deep down we're a pretty good bunch of people with a fair amount of talent and a thread like this proves it, and makes STW a decent excuse for sitting in front of the web all day.

    Well done to all.

I started on here on 2001 as idt, used to work nightshifts for BT back then and would only get to log on around 3 in the morning for a hour or so. There used to be a little panel down the side of the screen telling you who was logged in and how many guests, there only ever used to be about 4-5 at that time of the morning. I remember some girl who worked in tv (i think).

ernie, I don't recall asking any union to be militant, I merely said that they agreed with my company that payrises should be scrapped and its been done, and currently they have not put in place or discussed an alternative way of ensuring staff are motivated other than being told 'well, at least you've got a job'. I don't see that as representing a workforce.

    white101

Ernie – thats the point I was making (probably badly) I agree with you.

That the union where you work isn't militant enough ?

..no I reckon that some unions only try to look like there working for you, but in reality are keeping the employer happier than the workers (nowt new in that)

Kipper, worked there 9months as a temp and after that at a BT mailing centre for 2 years, 48hrs a week, permanent nightshift and represented by the same union. OT on a Friday night was time & a quarter. I think your right about Higson & co, everytime somebody shouts strike it gives them an even bigger opportunity to push through unegotiated changes

I find it confusing that unions and posties always blame the management, yet during my brief spell of employ with RM I was always told that most of the management are former posties anyway, who've just forgotten where they came from. I would find it difficult to beleive that any postie promoted up the line wouldn't also follow the party line.
I recall 12hr night shifts at a sorting centre at xmas when its busy, 2x 45 min breaks and another 20 min break, and an early finish.
Wish I could get that kind of deal now.

I feel that they are being let down by self serving unions, we have one at our place who just agreed to scrap cost of living payrises for most staff, payrises will now only come about if youv'e performed exceptionally and the company says there is any profit left over from shareholder divi's to afford a payrise!, nothing for appraisals either donesn't matter how well you've performed against your KPI's.

My neighbour took the fence down between us and built a conservatory back on the borderline between the gardens. When I asked about privacy glass going in or blinds (the house is slightly higher than mine & looks stright into the dinning room through the french ddors) They said they would think about it, so I put a 1.8m fence up down the length of the garden. The builders used my decking rails to stand on when they were putting the roof on the conservatory.
Anyhow, the neighbours objected and asked how they were going to clean there windows as the fence was right up close to the glass, the man from the council said 'how were you going to clean them if the fence wasn't there?' they said 'well we would just stand in the (my) garden when they (we) weren't in'
    case dismissed, trespass.

    I still laugh

we got our mutt 4 years ago from the rescue centre, a cross staff terrier. Cost us £75 and a few tins of food and a couple of old duvets as a donation, we got her chipped and 'done' into the bargain.
Can't get insurance for her because she's a rescue dog and we can't prove her age (wife saves up the family allowance to cover any vet stuff)
She's been great, totally house trained and friendly. She's like a house cat TBH.

I see this as another way to raise cash, there'll be more of these crazy ideas in the coming months (tax revenues are way down) No.11 downing st needs all the £'s it can get.

I was walking to the local shops on Sunday afternoon with my daughter, there was a few 'lads' who had clearly had a couple of carling round the back of the co-op. A young lass was walking toward the shops as well, when one of the 'lads' starts up with 'f@ck!n greats tts love show us ya……….' and a general assortment of inane sexist crap followed for the 2 mins it took her to climb the steps to the chippy. There were other kids around, but this doesn't seem to matter to them as they continued to mouth off violent, sexual abuse.

On Saturday I found out my friend had died from a brain haemorrage at the age of 39.

I'm not sure about execution, but I think kicking 7 bells out of oxygen wasters should be allowed.

My estate is in terms of size its about 20cm short of 5mtrs. Parking in some of the multi story tiny spaces you get now can be a bit of a squeeze.
