Who won the Surly Grappler in 502 Club Raffle?

You could try one of these* – bit shorter than a #4 though!
*It’s even bike related, as Chris Boardman tweeted the link earlier today!
wheelzFree MemberI just filed a couple of millimetres from the inside of the bash ring. Took all of 5 minutes and it fitted perfectly.
wheelzFree MemberWho is the bloke in the Hi-Vis? Is he a CPSO “rushing” to intervene, or just a traffic warden showing interest?
wheelzFree MemberI run a joplin on my BFe. Seems to work just as well as on the full suspension bike (although I have taken it off for the winter as it’s not a big fan of gloopy mud).
wheelzFree MemberI also broke an MmmBop frame. Bent it rather badly on the top tube and down tube. Didn’t actually snap though.
Didn’t bother checking warranty, as I don’t think anyone warrants a frame to be crashed at speed into a large rock – and when I say large, it was taller than me!
After hitting the rock, the bike fell over and I fell on top of it. I think this is what caused the bends, rather than the initial impact. The ground was very rocky, with big spikey rocks!
I replaced with with another MmmBop frame (same colour and everything) which I then proceeded to dent quite badly in a not dissimiliar crash.
You can see why I’ve been nicknamed Conan by my riding mates!
Now got a Cotic BFe and, so far, I haven’t even damaged the paint! (more a reflection of my newly cautious riding style than anything else).
wheelzFree MemberWhen the kids were younger we used to take them camping on the Welsh Coast at this campsite in Dyffryn Ardudwy, a few miles North of Barmouth.
The campsite is right next to a really nice beach and sand dunes that run for two miles. The nearest pub (with beer garden for the kids) can be reached on foot in 5 minutes via a traffic free route and Barmouth is only 10 minutes away on the train (which stops next to the pub).
From Barmouth you’ve got a really nice ride along the Mawddach Trail towards Dolgellau and there is a pub about 8 miles into the ride that provides a nice lunch stop. It’s completely flat, so ideal for a tag-a-long.
If you can get away for a day then Coed-y-Brenin is only 40 minutes away. The Pont Scethin route can be started from Dyffryn Ardudwy and Cadair Idris is only a short drive away.
If the weather is good then it’s a great place to go on holiday.
wheelzFree MemberWheel Chair user, hunting selfish MTBers yesterday:
But that wheelchair user has made concessions for the terrain, which means he probably doesn’t need a sanitised pathway to access the countryside.
Maybe, instead of building gravel paths into the hills, local authorities should instead use the money to operate a tracked wheelchair/mobility scooter rental scheme 😉
wheelzFree MemberAnd why not? Do you think the countryside is reserved for your personal use?
I don’t think anyone here thinks the countryside is for their personal use. This may open a can of worms, and it may not be the case in the OP, but I do wonder sometimes why it’s suddenly become so important to make large parts of the countryside accessable to all.
I can undertand accessability in places like country parks, but is it really necessary to make isolated places accessable to all by building these tracks, which invariably revert to their natural state after a couple of years of little maintenance anyway?
Are we trying to be too inclusive with countryside access? Should local authorities save the money and simply accept that a degree of physical ability is required to access some parts of the countryside? Or is there some legislation related to access that forces them to do this?
wheelzFree MemberI’d be interested in this aswell. I have a lime green Blur LT2 that the paint seems to fall off when subjected to just a gentle breeze…
wheelzFree MemberThere were no restricted substances in the early days, hence it was impossible to dope.
That didn’t stop them cheating though…
The winner of the first tour, Maurice Garin, was disqualified the following year for catching the train on one stage!
Actually, that should read: “Maurice Garin, was disqualified the following year for allegedly catching the train on one stage…” as Tour de France officials refused to confirm why he’d been disqualified and the inquiry documents were destroyed during the Second World War.
wheelzFree MemberChangi airport Krissflyer lounger….oh how I miss you!
I feel like I’ve spent half my life in there. Mind you, it’s better than my house and the other half can’t match their service!
wheelzFree MemberElfin of the Bailey said:
You’ve presented a good case for your defenceAnd this is what every thread is to you and a number of others, isn’t it Fred? It’s a trial, where there has to be a plaintiff (you), a defendant (someone else) and a verdict (delivered by you with your judge hat on).
The only acceptable outcome for you is when the defendant is found guilty, thanks to your Rumpole-esque deconstruction of every comment/opinion they post.
Do you have a high horse on 24-hour stand-by, or do you have some sort of shift system with more than one lofty equine?
wheelzFree MemberPersonally I would go for the XL if I was buying I have owned a Large and it just fitted me I am 5 11
I had a 2007 Yeti 575 in Large. The top tube was too long for me at 6 foot (that’s me, not the top tube).
wheelzFree MemberIf Engelbert Bumstick had written your earlier post I would think fair enough
I will be invoicing you for a new keyboard shortly. This one has tea all over it now!
wheelzFree MemberNice bike Wheelz.
What’s the location? It’s the trig point at the top of Slievemartin in the Mourne Mountains, Northern Ireland.
This is the view over Carlingford Lough looking towards Rostrevor and Warrenpoint. Was a bit windy today!

Rostrevor/Slievemartin by ianswheeler, on FlickrwheelzFree MemberIMO and that of a significant number of posters this sort of behaviour is inappropriate on a forum like this. There are plenty of other sites if you like that sort of thing
Firstly, I don’t think you’re using the word “significant” in the correct context there, as an overwhelming majority of the people who have posted on this subject don’t agree with you.
Secondly, most of us did understand your point but disagreed with it. The fact that you automatically assume that anyone who disagrees with you does so because they are too stupid to understand your point, I find more offensive than any number of “I’d like to vault her with my pole” comments. And it’s not just on this thread that you’ve made that assumption.
Lastly, A&A is covered in the forum rules, which are dictated by the people who own and publish this forum. As Mark has already stated, A&A will stay and surely it’s his decision as to whether it is appropriate, not yours.
wheelzFree MemberWell, one thing’s for sure is that after all this carry-on, no new girlies will be ar*ed to join the Forum.
Why not, as it seems that not all ‘girlies’ feel the same way as you about A&A or TandemJeremy’s personal crusade on behalf of all womankind?
wheelzFree MemberI bought a set of quite expensive forks of Peter a few months aog. Communication was pretty good and the forks arrived exactly as described.
He normally has a load of stuff on eBay as freeform5spot, so if you’re desperate to get hold of him have a search on there and then ‘contact seller’
wheelzFree MemberNasty horrible spiteful lot some of you are. No respect for other people. Disgusting.
So is that B for you then Elf?
wheelzFree MemberThats my last word on it.
I truly hope it is, but I very much doubt it.
Unless, of course, you’ve found another thread to post on that has more chance of giving you the attention you so obviously seek.
wheelzFree MemberTrouble is, a lot of people aren’t capable of engaging in intelligent debate, so find it easier to go with what appears to be a majority. Bit like ganging up on someone. Quite cowardly really.
Would there really be any point entering into a debate with you on this subject when you have already decided yours is the only correct opinion – much as TandemJeremy does on almost every thread to which he contributes?
I think there are many people on the forum who are more than capable of entering into an intelligent debate on this and many other subjects with you or TandemJeremy, but don’t because they are intelligent enough to understand that to do so would be akin to flogging a dead horse.
I wish I had their wisdom.
wheelzFree MemberOh, and ‘Most of STW’ doesn’t denote any kind of intelligent consensus, if that’s what you were suggesting, more a collective ignorance really. People need to think for themselves, rather than following the herd.
So, basically, what you’re saying is that if people don’t agree with you (even if they are in the majority) then they are ignorant and unable to think for themselves.
Has TandemJeremy logged into your account by mistake?
wheelzFree Membersome find it hard to grasp the reason why I think this sort of thread is out of place, disrespectful and distasteful on this sort of forum and in the modern era which is a sad reflection on how are society is.
Fixed that for you…
wheelzFree MemberTandemJeremy
Its a shame that some of you take yourselves so seriously…Hello pot, this is kettle, message over…
wheelzFree MemberI really hope he is different in real life (like hora and Elfin are – great guys)
I was hoping that Hora and Elfin were the same in real life. I feel disappointed now!
wheelzFree MemberWhat’s got some of your knickers in a twist, is that TJ has got under your skin and challenged your views. If you are completely comfortable with having such views, why react in such an abusive and insulting manner towards him? Why not simply say that you don’t agree, and put forward your own argument in an intelligent and thoughtful manner? As TJ does. Resorting to petty insults and cowardly tags is just pathetic and shows you up as someone who can’t engage with a debate on a more intellectual level.
Because as TandemJeremy has shown on many occasions he is not looking for a debate, or a discussion about a different viewpoint. He is merely looking for everyone to agree with him and, when they don’t, he either refers to them as stupid, puerile or ignorant or pretends his comments where made in jest and purely to wind people up.
I stick by my previous statement. He’s a virtual bully and is more likely to have scared people (both male and female) away from this forum than any number of Friday Kylie/A&A threads because of his responses to people who dare to disagree with his opinion on a wide range of unrelated subjects.
wheelzFree MemberI deliberately went over the top in my comments to add some humour into it – adopting the Millie Tant / Dave Spart persona
You failed.
wheelzFree MemberWell this makes a change. Instead of getting halfway through a thread only to find it’s been taken over by TandemJeremy and his “if you don’t agree with me then you are wrong/stupid/puerile (delete as applicable)” attitude, it was obvious from the start this time!
But, as we’ve seen on many an occasion, it’s impossible to have any form of reasoned discussion with TandemJeremy because, in his opinion, only his opinion is valid. Your opinion, if it differs from his, is obviously wrong.
I’m sure TandemJeremy perceives himself in a way that is very different to the way I perieve him.
He is one of the very, very few people on this forum I would avoid in real life, because he’s a virtual bully.
And, I have to say, I suspect he has been responsible for scaring more people away from this forum than any number of Friday Kylie/A&A threads.
wheelzFree MemberI’ve got tyre envy now. did seven days in Morzine last year with a single ply 2.35 minion on the front and a single ply 2.35 Crossmark on the back of my Bottlerocket.
Only had one puncture (rear) the whole time I was there.
Going again this year for eight days, this time with single ply minions front and rear.
wheelzFree MemberI wonder how many people managed to get in quick and buy them for £89.99? I also wonder whether CRC will honour the price for those that did?
wheelzFree MemberI’ve sold/bought a few bikes and frames over the past year and I always use Parcelforce.
They go by weight only (when you book online), their costs are reasonable and they’ll even pick the parcel up from your home/work.
Never, ever had a problem with them, which hasn’t been the case with some other couriers.
wheelzFree MemberI’ve got an Olympus u-tough 3005, the ‘weatherproof’ one. Not that impressed with the image quality to be honest, but it is quite tough and the HD videos aren’t bad. Aperture makes a decent job of ‘improving’ the shots though.
