Perhaps you need to press on a bit harder. You’re the engine, after all.

Yes but if you put the engine on one bike and it does 20mph and the engine on another and it can only (painfully) do 16, then I’d want to kno why 🙂

    It’s not the computer 🙂

Besides, I can feel that I’m not getting and speed out of it.

It “feels” inefficient in the same way you can feel the inefficiency as when you put your saddle down too low.

    (My saddle isn’t too low…)

Perhaps the bike’s just a bad fit.

My first mountain bike was too small and I had a similar thing with that – it just made hard work of riding.

I don’t think it’s the computer, it’s a garmin gps based one, so should be consistent moving it between bikes.

To clarify: for a given route, on one bike (a hybrid) I can average 17.5 mph and on this bike, it’s like 13.8 or something, and on one straight where I would be doing 20mph on one bike, on this one, it’s 16. And given the supposedly more aerodynamic position of this bike, you’d think it would be faster if anything.

So it’s absolutely nothing to do with “expectation”, as I’m comparing performance on the same route with different bikes – I didn’t make that clear…

I had something similar on a smaller scale. It’s what globalti said I bet. I reckon you could unravel it and see it’s indeed a hair.

Then see how long it is, and work out how many years it’s been growing…
    😯

    Pictures please 🙂

Don’t think anyone’s mentioned power yet.. Don’t put the power down when the back wheel is on a root or it will slide out.

    Thanks for the insights.

I hadn’t thought about the dirt aspect, though I wonder if the underside of the top tube ever really gets pelted anyway.

I conclude my preferred arrangement is full outers routed under the top tube!

Is there a grease equivilent of lard?

I have a 456 and an X9 mech and had to wind the end stop way out, which I thought was odd at the time, but it’s just about in range.

John Hannah is a shockingly rubbish actor IMO, but as far as I know nobody thinks he’s good either, so can’t be considered overrated. (Same as Reeves, Carey, Clooney etc).

That should read “most over *rated* actor in history 😳

I bought a patch for a tractor tube in a farm shop, and stuck that on the inside of a gashed sidewall with puncture repair adhesive, which has worked quite well so far.

I’ve heard people talk about the wheelie “gene”! I could never do it, but with enough practice I learned.

I wish I could whistle loudly using my fingers. Then my life would be complete.

I had a look at the We the people Arcade…. Where’s the front brake!? Every BMX I look at doesn’t seem to have a front brake – what’s that all about!!! How am I supposed to do an endo? 😯

I think it’s definitely some kind of crisis, but it’s a lot cheaper than a 911, Harley etc 😉

In the name of science, I’ll just try sanding the pads on the back and washing the rotors, and see how that goes.

What kind of tinkering did you do that managed to improve the front?

    Good question:

I took a blowtorch to the disc (in an attempt to burn off any contamination).

I removed the pads and did the figure of 8 on some wet and dry. Also gave them a blast of the blow torch.

Removed reservoir cover and made sure there was no air (there wasn’t).

I took it out for a ride yesterday and it’s working pretty well now. I’ll give the back one similar treatment.

They also started working better once they’d got a bit of muddy water on them.

    Thanks for your responses guys.

I’ve spent a couple of hours tinkering with the front one, and it’s feeling a bit better. It’ll get a trail test on Weds, so I’ll see how that goes.

My hunch is the meths contaminated the rotors/pads.

I thought white spirit left a residue but meths didn’t.. But certainly the “feel” is as if the pads are contaminated.

Nothing special with the lever reach, but they come nowhere near the bars.

I cleaned the rotors with meths.

Do people find with 1x setups i.e. with no front mech that the chain tends to come off? One of my buddies riding this setup had that problem all the time…

When the rebound speed is set slow, they might sound squelchy. What happens if you adjust so that it has full speed rebound? (The red adjuster on the bottom of the right leg wound fully towards the rabbit)

I normally clean messed up puncture attempts by rubbing it off with the emery cloth when it’s all dry.

Can I throw the (soft) plastic spacers into the mix? I would have thought these would soak up a certain amount of misalignment.

You can check your memory configuration by running memtest86 which should be a boot option of your Ubuntu CD. I highly recommend doing this.

You could try taking one stick of memory out if this shows errors.

Yes I wondered about insulating the top and bottom of the door. Some kind of rubber flap would do. I’m sure something must exist.

People seem to be divided on this Ronnie – I like her – Mrs Wheelie can’t stand her. Perhaps I’ve got strange taste as I can’t see the attraction of supposedly the hottest hotties like Angelina or Cameron Diaz…

There’s a lot of seatpost showing in some of those pics – do you find you start wheelying going up hills?

    I’m 5’8″ so SHOULD have a 16″ but I ended up buying 18″ replacement, which felt much better… (70mm stem, 140mm forks)

I usually do some sprints/stops at home and once I’m out on the trail try to do some hard stops when I’m on a decent hill. However, I’ve never been satisfied with the result…

Is it the case that if a set of pads are “badly” bedded in by not getting properly hot in the first place, that they will never perform very well?

    It’s obviously Santa Brooklyn.

No, the chap (the brains of the two) knew that Brooklyn was a state, not a city… 😯
