it was here, direction towards the road sign

Note the slight left hand bend – I don’t like those on a bike….

This happened just round the corner from me. At the time, I could not understand how the hell it happened. It was an open stretch on the A4 with a slight left hand bend and a slight downhill. It’s fast on a bike say 20 mph, top 20’s pushing it on a road bike. Cyclists go up and down there *all* the time – she would have known this as she also lives round the corner, and must have driven that route many times? Driving between Maidenhead and Twyford on the A4 (~5 miles), as I do every day, I would normally expect to overtake 5 bikes.

It’s so scary to think there’s people out there as stupid as this.

Condolences to his family, I understand he leaves two children behind.

Well, my son had a similar problem and we *have* BUPA cover but ended up having it done on the NHS anyway, as BUPA wouldn’t cover the cost of the surgeon because it was above some price threshold. And he was the only surgeon that did the op. Was not too impressed with that situation – so rest assured you probably wouldn’t be any better off with BUPA in your case.

I’ve used the silicone blob type ear plugs from Boots at gigs which do a pretty good job of cutting the volume down. They’re about £4 for 3 pairs IIRC.

There’s no way I’d go to a gig without them now… Years of gigs, band practices etc of nackered my hearing.

2cm narrower than the smallest gap you regularly have to ride through or until your chin is resting on the stem whichever comes first.

wwaswas, I cried with laughter. 😆

Trailrakers work really well for me in Chilterns mud, but they ain’t cheap.

I’m 1/2 inch taller than you, and I bought a 456 in 16″ as that should be the size for me (70mm stem) but it just wasn’t working. It felt cramped, and I was doing wheelies up the slightest hill. So I got another in 18″ and that feels spot on. Luckily the frame was cheap enough to do be able to do that!

I’m in the minority here though, so don’t take my word for it. Try and test ride the bike you’re interested in I guess would be the best thing.

oh, and man, trailrakers are hard work on the road…

Trailraker performance in thick mud is amazing. I have the puncture resist versions, which certainly are puncture resistant. The thin sidewalls and cost are their Achilles heel!

Would love to have seen, through the decades:

00’s: No-one, I think I’d gone off bands by this point.
Jellyfish, that would have been back in the early 90’s.
Queen, sometime in the 80’s (live aid?)
Big Star, sometime in the 70’s.
Beatles in the 60’s before they became big.

Joystick is fixed, battery arrived this morning!

I’ve written up a tutorial on how to do it here

Thanks to http://www.mtbbatteries.co.uk for the speedy service. I haven’t heard back from Exposure…

OK, so the joystick is apart! The rear end did indeed just screw off by hand quite easily. mtbbatteries.co.uk are sending me a new battery.

It looks like the cap had some kind of thread sealant stuff in there. Any ideas on a substitute I could use when I reassemble to ensure it remaining waterproof?

Thanks.. I’d prefer to replace it myself rather that be bothered with sending it off, but I’ve emailed them to find out some more.

The old saying is wherever you think the creak is coming from, don’t look there.

I was convinced my BB was creaking, so had that on and off 2 or 3 times. It turned out the creak was from my rear wheel, the skewer wasn’t done up tight enough… 😳

I’ve got the new wheels (Prolite Bracciano), and I’ve just been out for a 15 minute blast (flat route round the block), and top speed went faster that it has ever been.. A touch over 30mph which is quite a lot faster than I could muster with the old set. I couldn’t believe it looking down at the speedo. So far so good! (same (heavy) tyres as before, incidentally).

The bearings are smooth as butter.

Thanks for your inputs guys, I’ve just clicked “Buy”. I’ll let you know if it makes the blindest bit of difference 🙂

My recommendation is when practising, each time you fall off, try and analyse why you fell off, and address that on the next go, e.g do you always fall off to the left, then perhaps put more weight the other side etc.. That’s the way I approach things anyway. Maybe videoing yourself would help.

Interesting, thanks for the link, that sounds like what it is. The metal looks like it has just suffered from fatigue and split.

I believe the new DRM maps (if you have those) you don’t need to pay anything for, but to use the old v5 maps you need to pay $19.95 for an add on to read them. To be fair, knowing OS, MM probably have to pay most of that to them..

OK – so I bought MMTracker – it’s exactly what I was looking for. Initial impressions very good! Thanks!

The nation-wide traffic reports get on my nerves with Radio 2. They are going to be irrelevant to almost everybody listening, surely.

Not saying she was right or wrong, you should have bit your tongue and ignored

Sorry to sound rude, but frankly, that is a shameful, pathetic attitude.

People that like to shout at you saying that you shouldn’t be cycling where you can need to be corrected there and then before it gets out of hand.

    For example

All that blew up after some mad old woman decided she didn’t like bikes going past her house apparently.

BC did have a cycling phase in the 80s, and did some material on it too, I seem to remember Campagnolo getting a name-check.

I got a looky-likey bleed kit from somewhere off the web for about a tenner, from a BMX place I think it was, which worked fine with my 2007 Martas (no EBP)

I’ve spent some time tinkering with the set up, and have lowered the bars by flipping the stem, and it has made a hell of a difference.

    Previous times on commute:
    01:22:57, 01:19:01, 01:21:14

    New set up:
    01:12:46
