Thanks Phil, think you’re first suggestion looks to be the best and most straightforward, best to keep an eye out for those markers then!

captainflashheart, done blade a few times now, thought it was pretty good personally. What’s not to like? We’re doing ALL the trails so won’t be avoiding any of them and certainly no napping for 10hours

Hmm doesn’t sound too encouraging, will ring one of the shops as well tomorrow.

Just found this thread, which is pretty funny timing as we’ve planned to do ‘all’ the trails at Afan on tuesday 2nd Dec. By all I’d add to the above the Rheilffordd trail which is still offroad but is just the railway path. This takes our total miles to approx 85. Wrote a little heads up here: http://mattjonesmtb.wordpress.com/

Will be sending updates on twitter @mattjonesmtb #epicafan

One question you guys could help with… looking at the map for skyline loop off blade, it looks as though if you add on skyline you miss out part of blade, is this right? Chrispo, can you give any more detail on what you discovered? http://www.afanforestpark.co.uk/default.aspx?page=11333 looks like you might miss markers 76-79 of blade?

Great event once again by nofuss team. Great crack on course with everyone. Some seriously nasty stuff happened to many people on the brutal course. It’s a world champs though so it’s good that the level is raised all round.

17th overall and won my age cat (limited numbers in that one mind), felt pretty solid through with no major dramas and actually for once got the eating right which makes all the difference.

Massive congrats to Ant White, what a legend and top top bloke, his last 24?! Might give the rest of us a chance now :)

I’ll be there. Chris has wisely limited himself to one 24 for the year after Bonty and I think I’ve just about recovered from the heat exhaustion/stomach cramp trauma to have another crack (the former isn’t going to be an issue in scotland though)! Looks like the course is pretty similar to last year so will be good fun and rough descents with some steep and long climbs to boot.

Thanks all, the price on the endura was too tempting to miss and seems to get descent reviews

Ok folks so on-one direct couldn’t tell me the weights as they were in a warehouse somewhere that someone couldn’t possibly contact to find out…

So went ahead and bought the get you home and spygadget. Both come in at around 80g so pretty good really. Going to have a fettle with the bikes to see if they are missing anything that I might need but doubt it, hopefully the chain tools work ok. Obviously need to carry a tyre lever separately but 100g saving on my pre existing tool ain’t bad for the money.

egb81 cheers for that, look like good ones. If you have any good mtb that would be ace, explored the bridleways immediately east of Kingswood but nothing of any note until getting out towards lansdown.

Thomthumb: that’s a very good point, particularly if I speed back down to the bottom!

Thanks all, as I expected, need to go a bit further out. Will have to deflate the tyres a bit and chuck a backpack full on sand on. Longest from the doorstep would be up from the river to kingswood high street. 1.6 miles 300ft :(

In a word, yes! But not alone, added together with other weight savings it may well make a difference when racing. Could be the cheapest 50g saved. And before anyone says it, yes I’m sat here eating rabbit food and have just taken a large dump.

Ok folks thanks but the budget is around £150 so its not so much a stretch as a leap to £400+ . Those things also look pretty grim to be sat in front of the house. As I said the shed itself won’t be providing the security so don’t expect anything secure just something that is well built and will last.

Yep, best holiday I’ve had. Loads to do, pretty cheap to eat, and being croatia’s neighbour it shares the same awesome coastline. Hit up the national parks for walks. You’ll need to hire a car to get around but accommodation is easy to find and cheap on owners direct. Kotor is a good place to base yourself but worth looking at getting a few days somewhere else to explore from. Try the rafting in the massive canyon in Bosnia!

Nice write up Rob, was nice to meet you. Few thoughts from me here http://mattjonesmtb.wordpress.com/

This thing blows kielder100 clean out of the water in terms of a comparison, loads more technical terrain (both up and down) and fantastic scenery (if you can find time to look). Hopefully we’ll see more emerge at this distance and organised by legends like the guys involved in this.

Another well organised no fuss event. Hard pedally sections mix things up a bit. Good timing, loads of free stuff excellent vfm over gravity series. More events like these please!

    http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/29er-bar-width-for-xc-racing?replies=17#post-5053703

See this post. Some absolute tool knocked me off at 20mph on the really wide straight section after the fastest straight to switchback fireroadish decent. Few hours in to a solo 12 and was 2nd in open at the time (finished 3rd so happy enough)

I was solo but still overtaking/being overtaken quite a lot during the day. Apart from this incident everyone was very polite, good banter all round. I’m afraid its the few that spoil it for the many.

My 2p on overtaking is to shout rider as you are approaching (but not directly behind) the person you want to pass to give them warning that someone is there (as they dont always notice you) then if a direct opportunity to pass presents itself I would say passing on your left/right (how much longer does it take to add the passing on your left bit for absolute clarity rather than just left right). If there isn’t a direct opportunity to pass I would say any chance I can get past when you get a chance, then sit there patiently until they say pass on right/left now. Then when past, ‘thanks very much mate, nice one, appreciated’. This approach has had a 100% smile and thanks pass rate for me over the years. Some dude even said to me ‘good riding dude’ at the bikefest so customer feedback is also good :)

Might now consider chopping my 740’s on my scale down a bit after some absolute w*nker n*bcheese decided he’d tangle handlebars whilst overtaking me on a 5m wide path 4 hours in to a 12 solo at the bikefest sending me flying at 20mph over the bars, good job he crashed as well but a few metres ahead and jumped swiftly back on his bike before I could grab him!

Anyone doing the Manx 100 at the end of July?

YES. I’m entered (amongst only a handful I understand as they are trying and get it off the ground), done kielder a couple of times but that’s probably enough. I like to support local races as much as possible particularly when organised by locals but think things like the manx100 just offers something a bit different i.e. more of a technical challenge and is a bit less of a corporate machine that some events have (in some cases necessarily) turned in to.

    Details here: https://www.manxtreme.com/event/manx-100 get involved…

Snap just bought the same. 740 is wide (going from 680 myself) but feels good, better leverage, more stable on the descents, got some mount zoom ones and they are so light anyway I thought I try wide before cutting down (it at all)

£27.50 is fairly reasonable for a race of this length IMO. Organisation wasn’t amazing although I believe its for charadee so in that context I’m happy enough. The weather I suspect sapped many people’s sense of humour…

Not forgetting that the course was brilliantly bloody brutal, the best I’ve ever done for a longer distance race that’s for sure which is the MOST important thing I reckon

I have the same forks and have knocking. They have had about 25hours riding so don’t think its a bedding in issue.

If it helps others in decision making I have slx m666 on my dh bike and they are definitely more than powerfull enough, german websites have them cheaper than the setup listed above for zee if you dont need the 4 pot power.

Does this thing solve the potential problem of the bulky lenses on csc that I’ve noticed to date, guess it would be expensive but best of both worlds (from someone who know little to nothing about these things!)
