Interesting thoughts folks. I think an issue I’m going to have is that the head tube is short and the steerer shortish.. along with the fork only being 420mm AC, I think I’m going to have trouble with the bar height being too low. I might just give it a try though

That’s precisely why I ended up using a 45* stem on my brief experiment. Went back to a flat bar and barends in the end as I just couldn’t get the position right (too low and long on an old Kona).

A steerer extender and something like this would have been better, but I couldn’t be arsed:

Stood my old MTB commuter with 26×2.0 Big Apples and my SS with 700×25 next to each other and the highly unscientific eyeball measurement says the SS is about 5mm bigger diameter. To be totally honest the 26″ is way more fun/bettererer to ride for the reasons amedias gives (my use is also primarily city-centre stuff with occasional heavier loads).

I’d probably ride it, but not sure I’d buy it. Would have to be a good price and something I particularly wanted.

Totally not my kind of bike, but this 17lb Scott Spark seems pretty impressive, and still quite usable, to me:

Crank Brothers m17. Sort of boring, but lasts forever and works well. I’ve got a Lezyne too. It’s shinier, but not as nice to use.

What’s the sag? Is there a difference in BB height between the two bikes? Pedal strikes are likely to be more to do with it just being a different bike or poorly set up shock than the shock being borked (though it could be that too).

Doesn’t a 68mm bb-shell need one spacer drive-side and two on nds for Shimano mtb stuff?

Admittedly only an ancillary component, but a riding buddy had a new Race Face rear wheel on warranty within a week when his axle snapped (bought as a full bike). That was through the European distributor in Spain, or wherever.

4/4, but I’m not sure I’d last long on my fixed with the ice we have here now.

Otherwise, Reverb. Bit of a pain to service, but parts are easy to get hold of.

its just stupid unless you are riding a very steep and muddy offcamber grass field.

Funnily enough the only time I use mine nowadays is at dual-slalom races in the Spring and Autumn on the local ski slope. Wouldn’t be without them for that. Wouldn’t want them for anything else.

A Meta V3? Out the bottom of the seat tube, down the side of the shock and into the cable/hose hole on the down tube.

Be interesting to see if they get him in to do gear and bike reviews.

I want him to review one of Doddy’s bikes and say it’s too small.

I heard that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God Queen of this Realm and of Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith shit a brick when she saw that Union Flag on there.

I’ve had several successes with ordinary tube repair patches, assuming the hole is relatively small. Even with slightly larger holes a patch on the inside and a dab of liquisole on the outside can work.

As above, bb30 might make me a little wary, but I’ve had 2 and 1/2 problem free years from the bb92 on my current fs.

Do we have any stats regarding children strangled by bike helmet straps?. Serious question, not trolling at all, as it’s something I had never even considered….

A quick google brought up this, but there are newer news reports too.

It’s law here in Sweden. Tbh, I sort of agree with bits of the OP but can’t be bothered getting worked up about it. My 4yr old has recently decided he likes launching himself around the small dirt-jumps near our place. Reckon the helmet is justified for that, which sort of brings me to the idea of ‘reducing his risk’ so as not to need a helmet. Not sure I’d want to do that.

Anybody got a carbon model? Was reading about a few cracked frames over on pinkbike.

Everyone, and their dog, has a Spectral here in Sweden. Seen a couple of cracked chainstays after not a lot of use, or abuse, on the alu model. Only snapped carbon one I’ve seen was from crash damage. The alu frame is ridiculously light for what it feels capable of, which might not be a good thing long-term.

Same. I tend to go Answer -> something fashionable -> Answer. Ubyk had decent prices last I bought some, but I agree they’re not as easily found as they used to be.

I’m another who finds RF bars harsh, but the price of Vibrocore bars has always put me off. Both my bikes are on Answer bars instead.

Those who struggle, have you considered ski gloves? They’ll be bulky but warm surely?

Maybe I just chose a rubbish pair, but when I did it I found the palms were the weak point in terms of retaining heat.

Briskers are rubbish in actual cold, and I’ve got half-decent circulation. The one time they sort of worked for me was with a pair of latex gloves on under them. They’re decent enough on average autumn night rides, though.

The best (warmest) cycling gloves I have are still some old Planet X insulated softshell things. The fit is weird, but they’re not too bulky, don’t get sweaty, and have worked down to -10 for me.

I have some of the Endura Urban ones. Wearing them right now, in fact. They do the job, but are the only ones of that kind I’ve tried, and cost me about £40 iirc.

So they took the feedback about what they needed to do to make it actually better and decided to make 2 completely separate trails instead? Weird.

Truly great work everyone working against this, though. I grew up riding up there, and all the photos bring back some fond memories, as well as a sense of disappointment.

there is the possibility that the person riding the wrong way would not have been on the trail if e-bikes didn’t exist. E-bikes, especially de restricted ones, will appeal to more groups than those too old or injured to ride a bike. I’m talking about yobs, in case that isn’t clear.

Man, meet straw. Oh, you already have? Marvelous, carry on then!

What do you mean with “starting over again” after it goes flat? Just pump it up and go for a ride. There’s no better way of distributing the sealant within the tyre.

I use a Dakine Lowrider for lost of my summer riding. It’s a bit of a pain with the bladder full, but it’s rare I do that and comfortable otherwise.

Mine was kind of the opposite direction; a 2013 Sektor with 2016-ish dampers. I also fitted a topcap for bottomless tokens without issue (fyi, you can’t fit a full set in the simpler Sektor spring, only 3-ish).

You can compare things like parts numbers for uppers in the RS tech documents. That’s usually a good start to see what fits what.

It works. I’ve done it. Swap over the rebound damper while you’re at it. Makes a huge difference.

Aren’t there a couple of British guys getting ready to release an oleo strut damper? I forget the name, but remember having seen it on PB a couple of times.
