Was it as easy as logic tells me it ought to be?

Yes, absolutely! I ended up going back and doing it a few times and strangely the actual drop is the easiest bit, you don’t even feel the landing.
The hardest bits for me (as a middle aged, wheels on the ground rider!) were getting lined up for the drop with enough speed, then once you land you just rocket off down the hill!

After years of being intimidated, I finally plucked up the courage to do the road drop at Cwmcarn on Saturday!

    Old dog, new tricks….heck yes!

6’5″ and have had two XL stumpjumper FSR 29ers. First one was a 2014 model and second the revised 2016 version. Both great and fantastic fit for me.

It was really easy for me to get a demo on the XL 2016 model, (just went into the Spesh concept store and asked) and had it for a weekend. Best all round MTB I’ve owned in 28 years.

    Where are you based?

Interested in this too, (2016 stumpy), does anyone know which cables will fit through the internal routing without drilling the holes?

Spank oozy trail 295 or 345. Been a couple of threads on these recently and they are great rims.

cheers gents. they look sturdy, and are comparable price wise to hope hoops.
suppose I could buy some of the rims and get em built onto my hope hubs?

Definitely an option but the hubs, bearings etc in the standard wheelset were pretty good from what I remember and lasted well. The wheelset I bought also came with the adaptors for different axles. Not sure if they still do?

    Hi ton,

I had the previous generation, non-boost wheelset. I think they were oozy trail EVO (26mm width) on my old stumpjumper 29er. I loved them. They never needed truing, survived Alps trips with no issues and even the freehub made a nice noise! Noisy but not as loud as hope.

On my current 29er hardtail I have hope hubs with the Oozy Trail 295 rims (29mm width) and again I love them. They are stiff, strong and look great. They replaced some Arch EX rims and the finish and paint quality on the spank rims is way better.

    Definitely recommend.

6’4″ and 15 stone if that helps at all?

Does anyone know if Spesh will be bringing out a command post with a longer drop?
I hope so, the 125mm dropper is the only negative point on my Enduro!

Same here, 6’4″ on an XL Stumpy 29er and could easily get away with another 75mm of drop!

Aaaargh, Tracey that is not what I wanted to hear!

    C’mon Spesh…..!

I have a 2016 expert carbon 29 in XL and is just under 29lbs stock.

    Fantastic all-rounder.

I tend to use the Swat box for cake, you can get 3 large slices of chocolate or coffee and walnut in no problem. Not sure about tools and stuff though!

Been to Australia and back with mine, plus trips to Alps, Spain etc. Both carbon and Alu bikes, no issues so far!

    Totally agree with Squirrel ^^^

Swinley on a hardtail is awful (IMO). Go and ride it somewhere else on a more natural surface before you dismiss it.

Had HR2s Exo casing front and rear on my Stumpjumper 29. They’ve done a week in the Alps and 2 weeks in (very rocky) Spain without any issues.

    Quick question:

Do the SLX M7000 brakes suffer any of these issues?

    warns74
    Free Member

I’ve had similar concerns with an XT8000 brake – the front is A ok but the rear always seems to have a piston sticking. Generally occurs after longer descents, no squealing but the rotor rubs after the descent. Possibly the widely publicised issue experienced with these brakes. Bleeding improves it a bit.

I also think the rear rotor seems to warp more with heat – RT76 type, maybe I got one a bit out of tolerance. The front is ok and on my other 2 bikes I’ve got the RT-66 rotors which I think work better. Weigh the same too !

steel4real – ^^^This is exactly what I’m experiencing. In a way its good to know its likely to be this and I can manage it with the occasional bleed but the noise does drive me crazy when it happens!

I have Ice-tech (RT86) rotors on the stumpjumper and the standard (RT76) on my other bike. I swapped them over last week to try it and it was just the same.

    Thanks andyl and vince….

I’m really reluctant to dismantle the other brake, but agree it could be a good way of checking whether it is the brake or anything else.

They’ve just had a full clean, piston lube and bleed. The issue is still there, although it doesn’t seem quite as bad as before , so possibly there is still a tiny bit of air in the system?

    What size is it?

Have a search for the route maps for the Test Valley Hot and Cool rides (Gorrick i think). They start from Vernham Dean and are a nice xc ride over rolling countryside.

Go back and ride it again.

    As you were.

    ^^^^^ This ^^^^^

Why is it that the new default STW answer is to go on a skills course? It sounds like you have been comfortable riding it before so why change anything? Sometimes these things just happen. You have a set back and the challenge is not to let it get the better of you. If you feel the need for a skills course then go for it, but “getting back on the horse” seems like a good idea here.

Wow I could have sworn that was Ormskirk, exact same setup with the sheer rock faces, the drop that can just about be rolled etc. I’ve ridden that drop about 20 times. Spooky.

Does sounds very similar! Take a pic and post it if you can, it would be interesting to compare them.

Got hope pro2 evo and arch ex mk2 and also pro2 evo with spank oozy trail 295 rims.

Both used on 29er hardtails and I’m about 15 stone. Both are great and have survived without any truing or dings, but the finish on the spanks is better and they also look so much nicer too (IMO).

16 Stumpy 29 here also, which replaced the previous generation 29er. Shorter chainstays and slacker head angle are noticeable over previous generation, definitely have more fun on the newer one.

Fantastic all-rounder, from xc bimbles to trail centres, bike parks to the Alps and Spain. Just does everything well enough for most.

Went from 2008 A4 to 2012 A6 in the last year, both 2.0tdi (170/180 respectively) and predominantly used for longer runs with mixed driving but very little stop start town driving.

A4 (manual) used to do 47+ mpg all day long and maybe only 2mpg off that with roof racks and/or bike on.

A6 (multitronic) on equivalent runs does 42mpg and about 37 with roof racks / bikes

I have 2 pairs of fox demo freeride shorts which I use for general trail riding. I’m quite tall and like the fact they come up a bit longer and are easy to get pads under on the odd occasion I use them.

Both pairs are 3-4 years old and have been worn weekly, all year round in all weathers and apart from a bit of fading in the seat area and logos are still going strong.

    I’m a 34 and the 34s fit me perfectly.

Have 591 and 598 and would happily spend the extra on the 598. The new clamp design is better and more forgiving at the contact points and the torque limited tightening mechanism is great too, especially if you ever put a carbon frame in.

Spank oozy trail 295 wheelset or hope hubs built up with oozy trail 295 rims would get my vote.

Strong, light and a decent price point.

Stopped for a chat with a nice bloke in the Surrey Hills last week who was on a Jeffsy. He absolutely loved it and was hitting all the big gaps and jumps below Northern Monkey and making it look easy.

I’m building up a Commencal Meta AM HT over Christmas. Missus bought me the frame from a mate.
Not sure how good they are as I’ve not had a proper hardtail since my Hoodoo

Just finished mine ready for the winter (even thought it’s bone dry!) and very happy with it. Just need to cut the steerer down.
