Rational law – Costs £35k a year to keep a convicted muderer in jail per year. 40 years = £1,400,000. Rational solution – execute him.

Emotional law – Executing is wrone morally. Morals being part of our human emotional baggage, therefore emotional law is jail for life and no executing.

most despicable people on the planet

Bit strong…. but I see where you are coming from.

However just remeber that we, and the rest of the “free word” owe them a huge debt. they were dragged from their isolationist policy by the Japanese, and won the war. Without theit technology and power the Cold War would have had a far different outcome.

Far from perfect, but hey, there is not a country that is.

Very good Stoat. There is a huge diversity of opinion and attitudes in the Old US of A, there are parts that are screwed up, but the same could be said of most countries. However there has been to my mind a build up and power base of Neo Cons over the last 20 odd years, and that has detracted from the sheer openness of the country. And it perhaps has brought upon it the security issues. Others use to see it as a “fair” world policeman standing up for democracy and human rights, but that has long gone, being replaced with self interest and business. However, give it a few years and it could come back…. Anyone that has seen the America Cemetry overlooking Omaha Beach will be harshly reminded what those guys did for all the world.

It also has me paying more tax than i recieve but somehow counting this deficit as a benefit
ie i pay 12 k tax but get 10 k “benefits” back – how is it a benefit when I have “paid” for it and i get less back that i paid?

The “benefits” are what you get from the state, and please remember this is AVERAGE, so if you have no kids, then no Child Allowance etc.

Agreed. but they also said “i.e. 95% of us are living off the state in one way or another” which doesn’t follow and doesn’t appear to be true by that graph.

Agreed, it was an assumption by the OP which is incorrect.

    wallace1492

Looking at the graph: basically it is the 7th decile and above that pay more than they receive.

So it’s not the top 5% paying for the 90%, it is the top 40% paying for 60%.

That was not what was mentioned. The OP quoted that the top 5% pay 90% of income tax. That could still be true. The graph shopws that the top 40% are net contributors, different thing.

And remember, this is AVERAGE, so those whining about not getting a cash payment, well, go out and have some kids!

There will be local campaigns where you live encouraging cycling, join up with them. I would love to see more cycle commuting in Glasgow, and would happily help achieve this.

There was something like this on a while back, but more about whose fault it is for crashes. e.g. cyclists getting doored and the like.

Plus has been bits on the news regarding cyclist safety – Magnatom in Glasgow was on STV.

I think it would work, but programme would have to cover all aspects of cycling, from the grass roots work by guys like Ed’s Cycle Co-op and Bike Station to Sportive’s, MTBing, touring, etc etc.

Sounds very interesting, needing a hand?

10p per mile in rubber! £100 per tyre, 4 tyres means you change all your tyres every 4000 miles. Thats pretty good going!

He said 10p per mile on RUBBER, not tyres. Perhaps he needs rubber for some dogging activities, maybe wears rubber driving gloves while playing with rubber driving toys.

Not work related, so the milage allowance does not come into it. Divide up actual cost of petrol and tolls between whoever was in cars, driver pays nothing is a choice.

What I could not understand is why he would go to such lengths to try and avoid tax on less than £200k.

I mean, he must be rather wealthy and be on a vast salary, so what is the point of avoiding tax on (for him) such a small amount.

Possibly Z1ppy, but I don’t have a photo driving license (OK have a passport) however, I do not think the Police have access to these databases or photo’s.

I neither blindy believe or feel cheated.

I like to explore the possibilities, see all sides, question the evidence both for and against and weigh up the facts.

So, either he did take the “juice” as everyone else did, and still won an unpresedented 7 in a row, or didn’t take it and still won against those that did.

Assuming your good lady was not to blame….. Was there any witnesses? Worth reporting, but unlikely to have any consequences as there will be no proof of liability and as you say no damage. However it could still be viewed as failing to stop, so popping into local Police Office and reporting is a fair step.

Sometimes there can be one that is so far ahead in their sport that it beggers belief. Ed Moses, Phil Taylor, Tiger Woods, Roger Federer.

All bar one of them are not great comparators as they are skill / technique based sports rather than cardiovascular.

I cant believe I’ve just referred to darts as a sport.

AH YES, HE CAN ONLY BE COMPARED TO THE GREAT PHIL TAYLOR (APOLOGIES FOR CAPS)

There seems to be thought amoungst some on these threads that think that various drugs turn you into some sort of super hero. They don’t.

Ever seen before and after pictures of Ben Johnson? He went from normal sprinter into some sort of “super hero” body builder.

It seems now the burden is on a clean person to prove they are clean, and even then there will still be doubters.

Its the nature of the sport as it has been tainted throughout the years. Could LA be the only/first clean winner, and then multi record winner at that? Possible. Sometimes there can be one that is so far ahead in their sport that it beggers belief. Ed Moses, Phil Taylor, Tiger Woods, Roger Federer.

It seems to me the finding of EPO in his urine is evidence…I’m not sure what “legal” evidence is?

    wallace1492 – Member
It was determined that the analysis was conducted improperly and they did not satisfy any standard for doping control testing

    How and by whom?

    See above quotes from Junkyard.

Why 12 years later would you allow samples to be tested? You don’t know if they have been stored correctly, tampered with, contaminated. If they tested clean, then so what, it would not stop the doubters, and if not as above they could have been contamintaed/tampered with. Nothing to win, plenty to lose.

There are questions around the testing process for the samples. It was determined that the analysis was conducted improperly and they did not satisfy any standard for doping control testing. But lets not get the truth in the way of a good story.

This was not doping testing, it was research, and flawed at that, so in fact LA did not fail any tests. Fact.

Show’s what can be achieved with large scale teamwork and sheer determination deep pockets

The implication there is that everyone else doesn’t have determination and teamwork, which is terribly unfair to everyone else. The world is full of brilliant people completely dedicated to their worth causes, however much of it is not immediately understandable to the general public, and is not very easily used for political gain. So it languishes without funding.

What I can’t understand is that after millenium of so called modern society, we still have such tribal conflicts, petty national bickering, and such self interested posturing from virtually everyone

    Really? You can’t understand that?

And really, we’ve made great strides in society in the last thousand years.

Was slightly tongue in cheek. Yes, deep pockets was a very big part of it.

Yes, we have made great strides, we can now kill far more efficiently than ever before, there is still conflict in the Middle East, though not as much in Europe for the last 16 years. Africa has been plundered and the people there no better off than 1,000 years ago.

OK, we can extend help in a crises for better than before, but there is still far too much self interest to make proper progress.
