Bishopbriggs Festval was great fun despite the rain. Even gave the AIRBAG a go!

2tyred, any in particular that you are thinking of?
I would have thought that the park rangers would get round to the ones on the bigger trails. Carglas woods was ok, just a few down, couple down still near Boards Farm, but would imagine they will be cleared for vehicle access.

Looking forward to doing it in August. Will be a hard shift, but it is in a superb bit of the country and a nice weekend in Kinlochleven is always very welcome, even if the midges are not! Scenery is stunning, and the hills beautiful.

Had a go with a saw up there last week. Cleared the tree on way down from Castle to WHW. Seen a burnt out tent in the woods too, some people just should not be allowed out!

Not sure what bit has been filled in, but I would not think the moors could be touched. I know the rocky road down towards the Abie was taken out a few months ago and the cattle moved round there, used to like that bit.

Never had any issue with walkers…. or dog walkers, or in fact doggers…. (Mugdock East Car Park, sunset most days – so they say!)

Etrex is no use. I want to log where I ride, then download the route to the net and share it. I do not need a direction finder. But thanks for the post.

Someone (BoardinBob) has a wee box that tracks where you are then can download to PC and Net and it overlays it on a map.

Cheers uplink, how was battery life? A few mates use Endomondo and it drains their battery in a couple of hours.

    Drymen Camping[/url]

Hi Stan, See link above for small campsite beside Drymen. Mainly used by West Highland Way walkers, stayed in it myself. Decent enough with showers and soemwhere to cook out of the rain, and within walking distance of Drymen. From there you have a choice of heading to Aberfoyle and Loch Ard/Katrine or following West Highland Way to Balmaha/Rowerdennan, or along the NCN7 to Balloch and back down to Glasgow.

If you prefer wild camping, stay on WHW till after Drymen and just pick somewhere in the trees.

In Drymen, best food at the Drymen Potteries, and pop into the Clachan for a pint.

    Ha.

We’re setting off at midnight on Friday with the aim of seeing the sunset from the summit, then bombing/ mincing down.

Sunrise Bob, sunrise….. otherwise might have a long stay at the summit! 😉 8)

Wallace get a grip surely they are responsible for their own actions, worse case scenario the mountain rescue are called out with a elastoplast and a stretcher.

No grip required from me, just a wry sense of humour, and a great nod of respect in the direction of the guys doing it. Of course they are responsible for their own safety…… etc etc etc…. I though you could have a wee joke on this forum? 8) The 4077th stationed at Rowerdennan on saturday morning?

We have a Meet Up Group. Not a club as such, just a group of like minded people that like to ride. All free, great concept, and nearly free of all the rules and regulations that a formal club has, yet with all the camaraderie and banter that we all love. (do insist on helmets and a safe bike!)

We also cater for all levels of ability from beginners nights to advanced red and black options.

Looking at getting the Smart Lunar R1
Anyone using one or rec something better>
    Cheers guys

This is a great light, and run it in winter in combination with the Cateye Hand Grenade thing. Actually have 2 of them, and the cateye, so is really bright, and with a combination of static and flashing makes sure you are seen.

    stAn,

I would suggest get train to Milngavie, then do West Highland Way to Drymen. Turn off it there and head to Aberfoyle, from there you can go over the Dukes Pass to Katrine, or head round the trails near Loch Ard. There is always alternative of Braeval loop towards Loch Venacher. Plenty of wild camping on outskirts of Aberfoyle and is a campsite close if you want showers etc. Alternative is on WHW to Balmaha (they are trying to discourage wild camping on Loch Lomond but would probably turn a blind eye to a lone, sensible camper) Nice route over Conic hill, then back next day via Balloch and cycle route down past Bowling and along Forth and Clyde canal back into Glasgow. Keep up a good speed and the midges will be fine….. stoip are you will be stripped to the bones in seconds….. 😉

Did notice one trail had rather a lot of branches placed over it, definately as an impediment to cyclists. Apart from that and the odd dirty look from some walker I have had no problems.

Treat walkers with respect, stop for horse riders, don’t frighten dogs. Give people plenty of space and let them know you are coming through, a friendly word or bell ring should suffice, you will have no problems at all.

Used to be a sign at the Castle prohibiting cycling down that track.

Didn’t know there was downed trees on Voodoo Hill, not been all over it for a while. going to sort out branch tonight on WHW that sticks out at a jaunty angle, just right for impaling on…. also might try and break up tree at top of the boardwalk section as mentioned above. Someone seems to have started on it with an axe……

If you want the downed trees clerared, bring a saw or an axe!

There is oodles of stuff there….

OK, you do get mosquito’s that far north!! I jumped in…. FAIL! Anyway I have never encountered Mozzies in Scotland, just the Midge and the Kleg. Throw in the Ticks and we have quite an impressive collection of horrible insects that keep the faint hearted indoors.

You do not get mosquito’s that far north, they will just be small black flies.

On the midge front, the Skye midge would beat any other…. especially west coast – Glenbrittle. (or as I called it Glenbrutal, the only place that the midge has beaten me)

Quote: I don’t think that removing these barriers would achieve much other than unnecessarily antagonising the park authorities. The relationship between bikers and other user groups in the park has been fractious at times, so I wouldn’t be tempted to risk further strife for the sake of such a short section of trail. Unquote

Post was a bit tongue in cheek, as there is plenty of access for other trails. However as long as you are a responsible biker, I do not see any issues, I or any group I have been with has ever had any problems with other park users or authorities.

I find that Smidge works superbly. Better than SSS. Had it on up Mugdock last week when a chap had a chain break and it protected well. maybe it’s just the lowland midge that is stops, but the guys that put it on did say it was pretty amazing.

Definately worth giving it a go and seeing for yourself.

The Pocket Rocket is great but costs about £60. I ruined the first one MTBing in it all through winter. Wish I had used a cheaper alternative! But got a new one and use it on commute.

Similar here in Glasgow. Had a run in with a white van man 2 mornings in a row last week as he illegally undertook down the bus/cycle lane. Keeping a beady eye out for him and will report to the Police.

Pity is was a non marked, plain white van. Think the guy does not realise he is doing wrong, as it did it right past Maryhill Police station!

Of course it would be 😉 But if one was to, in theory try it, is it of sufficient size to allow one to get a bike and haul ones ass over it? Without of course tearing oneself on the fence. Just might be more interesting than out and back same route.

Cheers Sanny, need to try and find the path after Tinkers Loan. Will probably do out and back lower path then as it sounds like the upper one is just not worth the effort.

franciscobegbie, I quite fancy the Crags route sometime soon, would Bowling Basin be a suitable starting point, and when are you free for a wee spin?

Bob, meant from Burncrooks road up to the whangie, once you leave the road. Don’t think there is a good path up to the top. Have fancied this for a while…. Think anyone may fancy it? Could post for a run for next week.

Excellent Bob, cheers Jon. Been down that trail before Bob, think I will try it again. Guess if cutting across from Burncrooks road it is a bit hikey bikey. Jon, no access across the fence then? Where is the entry to the path to Auchingillan? Is it obvious….

Riding two abreast, Riding single file in the middle of the road. Wearing lycra.

    Take your pick.

Depending on the road layout and the conditions, there may well have been a good reason for this. It discourages overtaking when there is bad roads, heading towards pinch points or in heavy traffic. You may not have seen what they did, so therefore you assume they are being deliberately obstructive, but in fact they are riding defensively in order to protect the fact that they are pretty vunerable road users *. A wee bit of patience does not go amiss. I even got a thumbs up last night from a 4×4 driver when I signaled clearly and changed lanes promptly.

    * reserves the judgement that they might have just been eejits!
