For me I’m drawn to Panerai for the unique looks, the heritage and the fact that I just love everything Italian.
I knew about the movements before buying mine and I’m ok with that.
For me there’s just something special about it, I much prefer it to my more expensive watches (I’m wearing it today in fact)

More interesting reading for those inclined:-

    https://www.fernotime.com/blog/the-history-of-panerai

I think £3600 is a good price for that watch. It’s from a trusted dealer with box and papers and comes with spare strap.

Panerai is quite interesting in its history. I’m a fan of Panerai, but I’m also well aware of its history.

This is worth a read by someone who clearly isn’t a fan:

Panerai In-House Movements – A PAM Of Worms

My Panerai, PAM00088 is based on Valjoux 7750-P1. Can’t remember the exact year of mine, but about 2004 I think.

The watch Kryton is looking at contains the OPIII movement I think, OP being the outsourced movement designation. This also based on the Valjoux 7750.

Panerai’s in-house movements are shared between other brands within the group. IWC, Cartier, Baume & Mercier. I think where Panerai have gotten in trouble is when they have described their watches as having in-house movements but in fact had an ETA. I love my Panerai, I’m happy with the movement. When I wear mine I’m never worrying that it’s a Valjoux, equally when I wear my Rolex I’m not thinking about the movement. I get why people do, just not me.

Would I buy a Panerai new at RRP? Nope. Will Kryton’s £3600 Panerai hold its value?  I would suggest so.

(I’m on my second Panerai, well aware of the movements….i may be gullible in that regard! Both of mine bought for a price I was very happy with. My last Panerai I managed to part ex a watch that I was struggling to sell, so for me it was a very good deal)

The GOAT, better than Merckx, Big Mig, Armstrong? Call me sceptical…..

Turning Polit into an 80kg climbing god is a little bit too much. He was always an average breakaway rider who couldn’t really climb. Lots of raw power on flatter stages, but his transformation to me is quite startling. But he’s 6 feet 3 and at least 80kgs.

We’re all entitled to our opinion. I’m not going to be swayed…..too old and long in the tooth to believe in miracles.

It’s just surprising to see the one day racer is also breaking records on mountain climbs. I’ve never seen any GT racer be that good in February, March classics. To win sprints or to do 60 mile solo breaks.

Irrespective of the injuries or the other competitors, it’s the numbers that are out of this world.

Personally I don’t mind. I think it’s fair to say if he is juicing he won’t be the only one.

Nils Politt the wonder climber is probably more suspicious.

If he weren’t doping how would he be so much better than everyone else? It’s not even close.

And to be so good at so many different types of racing makes me really suspicious. Classics, monuments and GT.

My Audi Q4 is still hovering about 3.6kw/m, even though the weather has warmed up. Even in the cold spring it was averaging 3.6. I’m still driving sensibly. It’s quite a lot of motorway miles over 60mph so I suppose that doesn’t help.

In terms of cost though. I’ve gone from £60 a week in petrol to currently £19 a week for electricity (all household and car charging). I have to go to London once a month, it’s difficult to book in advance as diary clashes are difficult to manage, so tends to be less than a weeks notice to buy a train ticket, cost is on average £250 (standard class). Would cost me about £40 in the car and would be immeasurably more comfortable.

I had a 2 year old at the time 2016 Sportage and absolutely hated it. Manual gears were awful. 1.6 engine felt massively underpowered.
The gearbox was the most frustrating I’ve driven and actually pushed me to going auto. I kept it for 6 months telling myself I’d get used to it….

Families are very strange. I’m hugely fortunate to come from a very caring and loving family. They instilled values in me that I tried to instil in my own children. I’m incredibly grateful for my parents being the way they are, and I probably don’t show my appreciation anywhere near enough.

Dad is changing quite rapidly though. He’s become the difficult old man. Quite rude and belligerent, he’s absolutely fine around the family, but outside of this circle and he’s completely different. I purposefully now try to avoid events where he is outside of the house. We have spoken about it but he doesn’t see it as his problem, it’s other people’s. 10 years ago he would have been mortified if he knew this was who he would become. It’s difficult but I remember him for the man he was rather than who he is becoming. (Hope that doesn’t sound to strange!)

My entire family are very caring and non-judgmental. They really would give me their last £1 if I needed it. My parents motto was that their role in life was to nurture their children to be the best they can be. Some people judge a persons success on how wealthy they are, my parents judged success on how happy their children were.

I have seen the other side of it as well, where there is toxic family members and the difficulties that causes. Just makes me realise how fortunate enough I am.  And I hope my children in the future realise it as well.

And similar to TJ, as much as I love my family….36 hours would be far too much!! 3 or 4 hours a week is enough!! I go to the in-laws once a month for the full weekend….my gosh that’s hard work!!

@squirelking I don’t think this thread needs to be about sectarian issues. I completely understand the link and don’t disagree how this is wrong. Feel free to give me another whoop de du, but I was born to a catholic mum from Belfast and a Welsh protestant father who was a former soldier (parachute regiment), we lived in Belfast before we were forced to leave and move to Liverpool in the late 1970’s. Probably like a lot of people from Belfast, Glasgow, Liverpool, I could write a book on the sectarian issues that I have seen and how it has shaped my entire life)

My statement about living in Liverpool and not particularly liking football was to highlight that in a football mad city I am one of the rare ones who has no interest. But so what if I get asked about it? What does it really matter? Just politely say so. Personally if a work colleague wanted to talk to me about his passion, I’ll listen. It doesn’t matter what that passion is or how much interest I have in it.

When the ashes is on people talk about cricket. My father in law talks about it incessantly. Cricket bores the pants of me, but I’ll listen.

The sectarian issues being linked to football I do 100% agree is wrong. Similar to how I also feel about religion. But I don’t think this thread is discussing that. This thread originated with the OP asking why football is so popular. He doesn’t like it and wants to know if it is just him. However there is no interest to try to understand why it is popular (globally) and no interest to have an open discussion on the reasons.

But Cougar, the question “is it just me” or “what am I missing” is purely a smoke screen. No one who asks this question actually wants to be be educated or told why other people enjoy it. They want another user to join in sharing their loathing of people who enjoy things they don’t.

I do think these threads are reverse snobbery. Oh look at me, I don’t like football and all these people talk to me about it.

I live and work in Liverpool.  Football is a big thing in Liverpool. I’m not a football fan, I played rugby until I was in my 30’s, injury made me take up road cycling. Raced until I was 45….Im seen as following odd sports by most folk up here. But no one looks at me like I have six heads, that sounds more like paranoia. If they want to talk to me about their sport, that’s ok. They enjoy it and that’s fine.

My friends still play vets Sunday league football. Sounds like madness to me, but they enjoy it. So I don’t criticise the things they want to do, the things they enjoy. Live and let live.

Binners comments about Rugby, that’s also fine. It’s just jesting. He may think that, but that’s ok. If we were having a beer and he wanted to talk about football, that would be fine. I won’t understand why he likes it so much, but he does. I also wouldn’t have a clue what he was talking about for the most part. My friends rib me all the time for not liking football, the jokes about me preferring to stick my head up a fat blokes bum, sharing a post match bath with 30 blokes etc.

(I actually go to the odd Everton game, it’s free as is the beer! I don’t particularly watch the football, but it’s still a good day out, my friends really enjoy it and I enjoy the Guinness!!)

Hey Willard, really sorry to hear about you situation.
All I can do is offer my advice based on similar. I caught my wife of 20 years having an affair, stupidly I tried to make things work. We both blamed me, I went down a very dark hole. I did the whole texting, writing etc. Some days I’d be ok others I struggled to get out of bed. I couldn’t sleep – going to bed was awful, as soon as I laid down my mind went into over drive.
I did go to therapy, and I’ll admit I feel so much better as a person now. I paid to go private, I did visit the GP but it wasn’t a nice experience (during Covid).
If I could go back, I would have wripped the sticky plaster off. Completely stopped trying, once the decision is made, the decision is made. I completely understand the feeling for wanting to try, I honestly do. And if you must do this, in full sincerity I would just do it once with a plan to ensure you do end contact.
The best thing I did though was to sort me out. My wife was probably right with some of her rationale, but not necessarily her actions. But I don’t blame her, nor do I blame myself. Life moves on, and when you are looking after yourself, you may find that things do indeed get better. It took me well over a year to get my head into a position where I would stop blaming one of us. I couldn’t have done it without support though, both professional and family.
And I completely understand the home side of things. I left my marriage with nothing. My exwife dumped my clothes in the street and locked me out of the house. I moved into a cheap flat as I was still paying for the ex to live with her boyfriend. I personally had to get away as I understood it was getting me down. I left the UK and spent a year abroad in the sun, on my own. This was at the end of Covid, travel was still quite difficult but it was what I needed at the time.

And without wanting to be simplistic, keep positive. You are unlikely to see it, but a year, two years, with the right support you will be much better and happier within yourself. You may then be in a position where you could move forward into another happy relationship.

Wales is pretty much on your doorstep. I’m a neighbour just on the Welsh side of Chester.  Last year in the T6 I did Anglesey, Betwsy Coed, Lynn Peninsula, Aberystwyth and just outside Pembroke.

I loved it, it felt quite desolate when I did it. (October time) My trip was a very relaxed 7 days. Lynn Peninsula at dark on a clear night with a small fire was epic (solo stove).

@brokenbanjo just remember your job is to have provided the dogs with best life they could have had. I’m sure you have done that. As much as it hurts to see them pass, just remember you’ve had a great life together.

Making my excuses for Paul Heaton…..I thought the sound was off. Both he and Rianne didn’t sound as good as normal.

Missus was there and said she enjoyed it. And I’ve seen Rianne a fair bit both with and without Paul, normally excellent.

TJ I think you may be down playing the rape charges. Two individuals, very similar cases. He wouldn’t wear a condom, stopped when the complainant requested he wear one. She woke up in the morning to him having unprotected sex with her.
This was in 2010. He continued to avoid prosecution for these crimes. They may not be crimes here (should be but that’s by the by). But I can’t go on holiday and commit a crime in another country and then try and get away with it because it’s not illegal here.
Assange appealed to the different courts, he lost, he then entered the Equador embassy.

The Swedish authorities dropped the case after the statute of limitations for the offences had expired.

For me it’s getting the mindset right before the ride. If I’m doing a training ride, the preparation is all part of the ride and that includes the mental focus of what I will be doing that ride.

When I’m out on a training ride, that is the focus. My mind concentrates on the ride and me doing what I should be on that ride.

When I know I’m doing a bimble, and that’s quite regular, even during the prep I’m doing it at a slower pace. I’m not thinking about what I need to do, just thinking of how I’m going to enjoy it. I pick routes I do less often, I also don’t take a computer. See a path or a track you want to explore, go for it, might go nowhere might open up a different route. I don’t want to see I’m doing x watts or x mph. I purposefully sit more upright on the bike. Spend time looking around, observing what is happening, enjoy the fact that I can stop at a bench etc. If I see something to watch I will do so.

When I first stopped racing it was incredibly difficult to slow down. I was exactly the same OP. But empty your head of the concept of speed and racing, and be in the moment more (if that makes sense). I love bimbling now, I go out with my missus quite a lot and my primary concern is ensuring she enjoys it as much as I do.

Ultimately though, do what you enjoy. If you’re not ready to bimble, don’t. I strongly recommend you do as I find it really calming,  but hope I’m not sounding preachy!

I’d second Tenerife. Recently did 6 months out there. Climate is amazing. It does get hot, mid to late 20’s. But there is the trade winds, no more than a breeze but it helps it feel nice temperature wise.

We are going back in August, but AirBnB for us. We did a week in Feb all inclusive at the Guarmina Princess (prob wrong spelling!) –  but it was really nice play to stay. Seafront location with nice walks along the prom. Far enough away from the bars and clubs so was quiet.

Pool area was nice. Open so you could feel the breeze. Defo recommend it. I also don’t do well in the sun, guess it’s my Celtic background, but in Tenerife I’ve never felt uncomfortably hot.

Yesterday was Deacon Blue, Lottery Winners and Rianne Downey at the Waterfront in Liverpool yesterday. Weather couldn’t have been any better….im now hung over and slightly pink from too much sun. Deacon Blue were absolutely amazing.

I think I prefer the Atol on the Blue Rubber…..but I’m not a fan of bracelet straps so what do I know!

Getting very close to deciding on what Seamaster I want. Tried this on yesterday……but as I was leaving the shop I noticed a Sedna Gold Aqua Tera and that might fit the brief better. The watch is to be worn with a suit, so possibly think the Seamaster is a bit too relaxed.

@cookeaa nope. I have a few and I’m more than happy to wear mine for pretty much anything I’m doing. Shower, swimming, beach, cleaning bikes etc. I’ve always presumed that my divers are genuinely rated to 200 or 300 metres that they would be fine in the pool, shower or splashing about in the sea.

I have two watches over 20 years old, both still going strong.

@alpineharry I was offered £1750 for my BB58 in a part ex deal. Most seem to seek for about £2100 to £2300 second hand.

Mine is 5 years old. I think it’s just a touch dated now. I’d keep thinking about your options. I have quite a few watches, difficult to say what else to look at really. I always default to my favourites, so a Speedmaster, Seamaster (black rubber white face) or a Heuer Autavia (the Chrono on black leather)

Did a year between Tenerife, France, Cyprus, UK, mainland Spain.
I’m pretty lazy, but Airbnb for all of them. For me it was key to see good photos so I could view if there really was facilities to enable me to work. I need a good sized monitor for my job (spreadsheets, presentations etc).

You do end up paying more, but you get to check out the reviews and as mentioned they tend to be clearly photographed.Bills are all provided and a good portion of the adverts tend to include the wifi speed.

I’m probably going to similar towards the end of Autumn and early Winter.

Edited to add:- On AirBnB they do tend to give decent discounts for long term rentals. It still isn’t cheap as going private, but you know you can just turn up and everything will be ready and the bills are paid monthly.

My brother. Has done Martial Arts since 13, now 54. He had a fairly troubled childhood, in and out of trouble with the police, he didn’t do well at school, in the rare days he attended he would generally be sent home. Left school at 16, joined the army junior leaders. Fell in with a bad bunch in the army and became addicted to drugs, left the army at 23. Was in a really bad place, he was in a really awful pub at 1130am about to inject heroin for the first time. He had a major wake up, from there he went to the careers office and rejoined the army. Served for another 23 years leaving as the Regimental Sergeant Major a couple of years ago. Never touched another drug since he had the moment. (That’s no exaggeration, he literally went from the pub toilet about to shoot up direct to the Army Careers Office and rejoined)

Moving about with the army he was constantly changing different martial arts so he never made a black belt. Now at 54 and being out of the army he finally managed to get his black belt a couple of weeks ago. He says it doesn’t matter, belts are for holding your trousers up, but I can tell he’s also very proud to have finally achieved it.

Luckily for England the ref has been very kind.

Awful performance. Surely it can’t be a fitness issue? Definitely problems with the system, TAA wrong position. Foden works hard but ineffective. The England defence and midfield out themselves under massive amounts of pressure with the constant backward passing and no forward movement.

Octopus does give you a daily break down, so if you kept a record of what was charged and when then you could work it out.

Here’s the weekly view, you can also see an hour by hour breakdown. It just doesn’t tell you what was being used.

I have a Q4 Quattro Sport Back Black Edition, had it since end of March. Love it!!

Such a nice vehicle to drive. Super comfortable for long runs. I don’t use it for putting bikes in or anything like that, but for typical family usage I’m really impressed.

I am getting about 3.5 miles K/h. That’s typically a 70 mile commute mainly dual carriageway and motorway.

Let me know if you’d like any specific info about the Q4.

Yup, guilty. Obsessively ordered. I used to live on my own in a very minimalist apartment. Recently moved in with the girlfriend and her kids, wow! Honestly it’s incredibly difficult for my ocd mind to chill out and relax over the mess!

I have a lot of stuff, clothes, gym gear, bike stuff, but it all has a home. Out of sight.

Yup our elderly Basset Hound would go in the pram. Would walk incredibly slowly on its own for as long as it could. Also loved doing the school run with me when the kids were small. The way the dog would invariably be flat out in a pram on the way back.

I get up at 5am every Wednesday to travel from Liverpool to London. Absolutely despise it. I don’t get home until 9pm so pretty much shower and bed.

I need my sleep, naturally wake up about 7am most mornings. There’s no chance I’d be getting up at 5am on a regular basis.
