Generally, the opening date is the 1st June. If little snow, it could be earlier.
We’ve been twice now to do the Furka and Grimsel passes in the last week of May. Both times they were shut, the roads did seem clear, but avalanche risk was keeping it closed, gates across the road.

Hmmm, June 1st may be ok…guess I’ll need to keep an eye on snow reports.

    Thanks

All risks are accepted and nothing done about them.

I have the opposite problem. We as a company, waste so much effort on solving “problems” with no regard to likelihood and impact, and it’s staffed by a lot of people who don’t know how to say no. So everytime a slight (potential) problem is identified or the owner has a bright idea (!), all project plans get ripped up and nothing gets delivered in anywhere near the estimated time-frames.

Haha, so I just got an email survey from Strava:

“How likely are you to recommend a Strava subscription to a friend?”

    Anyone else?

Reasons I’m asking about shipping is you can’t drive thru Central America (I keep hearing about the Darian Gap thru which no roads exist so vehicles have to be shipped anyway).

Also, I’m not a mechanic (or particularly mechanically inclined) so not sure how comfortable I’d be venturing off to remote parts in a newly bought (new or new-to-me) vehicle.

I’m 6’4″ and getting on for 60 and this is something for my retirement so need a decent sized vehicle for sleeping. If I was shorter, younger and didn’t have a bad back, I’d consider a Defender with roof tent but, realistically, such a set up would kill me…

Also, Defenders or similar aren’t gonna be able to store an XL sized bike securely (i.e. inside)

My problem seems to be the inverse of most of the tales above. I work very closely with a designer who is very passionate about her job and is forever bothering me with the minutest detail of shite I have no interest in…

Is there a polite 2023 way to say “stop bothering me, you’re the designer, design it”?

Can someone distill DCRs video into a simple flow chart for me???

(Monthly) Strava premium member due for renewal on Jan 24 and still showing old rate (which I’ve been paying since Sept 2014).

Only two premium features I’m interested in are
    (1) personal heatmaps
    (2) classification of segment times (particularly “Today” as that’s a good indication whether a trail is open ie not snowed in or closed due to downed trees)

This thread is grim but fascinating. The very definition of morbid curiosity I guess.

I started the thread as it occurred to me that my current employer almost certainly doesn’t have a process around “death in the workplace” but, as we’re a small IT company, we’d likely shut down for the day. Obviously this wouldn’t be feasible in some workplaces or industries, so I was wondering what others do.

(As it happens, I work from home, and alone, apart from my dog! Not sure how long it would take to for someone to realize something’s wrong if I keel over! The joys of getting old and morbid…)

I have the feeling that most people today don’t appreciate how profoundly the USSR shaped the modern world and how significant the events of 100 years ago were.

You might be right about the general population but, I’d hazard a guess, most of the active posters in the chat section of STW are old duffers like me who remember Reagan poking the bear (indeed, it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a couple of old codgers here who remember the Cuba crisis!)

The point is ALL empires did terrible things at some stage of their existence, to at least some sub-set of their subjects…
(But I’m not an apologist for USSR either!)

A friend started a new job and was being walked round to meet the team.. “and this is bill’s office. Good morning Bill. Bill? BILL!”.

Well, that was some foresight by the employee! Or was it something more sinister?

Not read the article as NYT is pay-walled but you could accuse Britain, and many others with an “Empire”, of doing similar to that…

TJ: you’re retired now, aren’t you? Get yourself down to that there London and offer your services as a political analyst for SKS! Go tell him to pull on his big boy pants! 😄

I can see both sides of the argument. There’s definitely two different styles of leadership that could be useful here. “Quiet consensus” v “Firebrand”.
I’m guessing your somewhat combative style prefers the Firebrand type 😉

    The Recruit is pretty good.

Agreed. Binge watched it over a few evenings last week…though it’s on Netflix not Prime if anyone else is looking out for it. It sort of morphed from a comedy about a dysfunctional CIA into a more regular spy/action thriller…

I think you’ll find it hard looking for laughs if you think they’re going to be a comedy set-up.

Nah, you misunderstand me. If I was any good at Photoshop, I’d be grafting sidepods and wings onto pictures of a pimped out Escalade with 20″ Chrome rims…

so it looks like Cadillac want to enter F1 supported by Andretti. Do Cadillac even have any sporting heritage to draw on? My immediate thoughts when I hear the name are wallowy barges with blacked out windows and chromed wheels…

Came here expecting just such a response! Iz not disappointed. This should provide plenty comedy value 😄😄😄

Yeah, can’t figure out where this is going. AIUI, there must be at least 218 (?) votes for one candidate and the Democrats can’t muster that number of votes, so yet again, the US is being held hostage by extreme right nutters.

Unless sense prevails, and sufficient moderate Republicans (does such a thing exist anymore?) decide to vote for a Democrat speaker…

Lol, I’m not a programmer at all, so no idea what’s going on but that tune brings back memories! Presumably someone has too much time on their hands 😉

I kept on getting “performance error. Minipops 7 can’t keep up” messages. Do they use the same hamster supplier that STW use?

I can’t see Putin bombing the hell out of civilian targets as anything other than weakness (and barbarism obviously.)

<Chewkw>That’s also a “Western” tactic* so does that makes “us” barbarian as well</Chewkw>

    * See Dresden, Hamburg, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Vietnam, Iraq etc etc

    vlad_the_invader

I’m pointing out that the current Russian tactic is militarily somewhat naive.

But politically astute? The bigger picture is pressurizing “the West” to stop supplying arms to Ukraine surely?

Also (and I admit I don’t know the answer to this…), are the Ukrainian forces/infrastructure more heavily protected by surface-to-air missiles? And, presumably, there are a lot more undefended civilian targets to choose from…

    vlad_the_invader
    Full Member

As long as they are lobbing them at civilian targets and infrastructure that’s fewer left to use against military targets,

I think you have your priorities wrong there, slowoldman! (Or your choice of phrase is clumsy…)

After a bit of digging around, even with the 25% discount (which only applies to yearly subscriptions, and only for the first year), I’d be paying more than I am at the moment…
So, if you’re already a subscriber, be aware you may end up paying more by canceling and starting a new account…

    vlad_the_invader
    Full Member

Hmmmm…been a long time Strava subscriber and it’s irritating the discount isn’t available to existing subscribers.

I’ve just had a look at the list of “subscriber-only” features and personal heatmaps are really the only thing I’d miss so I’m considering cancelling and re-subscribing with the discount. But I can’t find any info on how long the discount applies for or any other conditions…

I’ve had a quick look but can’t find how much the current subscription rate is as your forced into a free trial if you’re not signed in. I think I’m grandfathered in at a $6USD/month rate for some reason.
