Ok, I’m trying the white vinegar trick as I have some already.
Does this need to be done on on “when needed” basis or do you it every time said garments are washed?
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberWhy would Garmin make it easy for people to bypass their hardware and use their competitor products?
Or more to the point, if you have a Wahoo, why don’t you create the route in the Wahoo software instead*?
*As I don’t have a Wahoo, I have no idea if Wahoo even have route creation software – if not, or if it’s shit, then it’s Wahoo who should be criticized, not Garmin
I’m not really a Garmin fanboi even though I have a Forerunner watch and two Edge head units. Their software does leave a lot to be desired but, from a business point of view, making it easier for people to use competitor products is stupid ;-)
1vlad_the_invaderFull MemberI’m contemplating one of those Amazon Firestick tablets but, it seems, they don’t use Google’s Play Store. So how can I check whether apps I would want will actually work on the tablet?
I’m after fairly mainstream stuff: YouTube, YouTube music, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, Channel 4, ITVX…
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberNot thought this through entirely so feel free to criticize but what about time penalties if the rider is under a certain time on a descent segment.
Eg: in advance e of the race, an experienced pro sets a reasonably/safe time for each “alpine descent” and any rider who is under that time is penalized by 2x the number of seconds of the delta (a bit like Strava live segments)
The UCI would have to mandate that head units somehow flagged up the target times and (audibly?) warn the riders if they are exceeding the ave speed.
Potential penalities would have to determined in real-time so everyone understands what is happening.
The objective would be cap speeds like they used to do in road rallying BITD
I’ve no idea how such tech would need to be tweaked for poor weather conditions…
Discuss….
1vlad_the_invaderFull MemberApologies for the humblebrag if everyone else is getting a bollocking for not trying hard enough ;-)
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberInteresting reading that Adam Hansen interview in Velo – he’s proposing some sort of sensor which attaches to a riders skull (rather than the helmet) to measure impact (mainly to trigger concussion protocols).
I don’t think there is a golden bullet to deal with rider safety. Safety netting and/or padding is a very specific fix for a very specific problem in a very specific place (which is fine for short course events like DH racing) but its a game of whack-a-mole as there are SO many potential other risks.
Incident detection tech on Garmins is shite currently – I switch mine off because of so many false alarms but unless the units themselves have built in satellite comms, then there’s too many places (eg down a gorge alongside an alpine descent) where there just won’t be an Internet connection
(As a side note, I know ASO have to fly a plane above the TdF to relay TV signals as there’s insufficient reliable connectivity. I guess other large races may do the same. Maybe such connectivity could be leveraged for tracking riders but that’s not gonna work for smaller events without such coverage.)
There’s also the question of rider safety when they are training. Presumably the teams have an employer:employee relationship which includes an element of duty of care but there’s been some serious accidents out of competition.
Then, of course, there’s also rider idiocy (Chris Froome trying to put on a jacket during cross winds between buildings….)
3vlad_the_invaderFull MemberDon’t get sucked in to road.cc!
I avoid that website as it just seems to exist for clickbait purposes
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberBy the time the pad goes mine have usually also gone a bit too transparent and chipolata.
Rather than bin I might use them for short sessions on the trainer, but not for outdoors
Yeah, mine too. I suggest the OP asks one of his good cycling buddies to ride behind him on a sunny day to check just how translucent his shorts have become ;-)

1vlad_the_invaderFull MemberI know everyone hates the UCI but I’m not sure you could “risk assess” such an eventuality out of existence.
I assume doctors and paramedics were on standby but it isn’t practical to remove all/the majority of the risk for events of this nature so, for instance, it isn’t possible to put up crash netting on every corner of every descent (wrt Gino Mader).
If this ‘2hr’ delay in “officials” action is correct, I’d be interested to know who first realized that Muriel was missing and when, and what they actually did at that point. (Presumably her DS/Team Manager or team mates would be the first to realise something was wrong, followed by her family or friends who were waiting for her at the finish line…)
Hopefully, they raised their concerns with the organizer very quickly and the organizers actually did something productive though with head injuries (speculation?), that may not have been fast enough but this is all for the police/coroner to investigate, not us…
1vlad_the_invaderFull MemberMany many years ago, I raced* XC MTB events but was hopeless and had many more DNFs than finishers (usually in the lowest 5% of the field).
At no point did I ever “report to” the organizer that I’d dropped out of the race. Frankly, I’m not sure how practical it would be to do such reporting back then.
Now, of course, electronics allow better tracking but such technology costs. Obviously, at the very highest level, it’s easier to mandate use of technology or have sufficient human resources to be able to monitor riders safety. So, on the face of it, that would be a relatively “easy win” for the UCI to implement at the very highest level though it’s probably too onerous to mandate for smaller events.
And, of course, similar concerns apply to other event types (long distance off road running events and/or open water swimming, or sailing, or motorsports)
* trundled around at the very back of the field
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberNever mind the UCI, have the police/coroner released any statements relating to any ongoing investigation?
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberOn a recent trip to rural Washington, Oregon and Idaho, I used an Airalo eSim (data only) and Mrs Vlad used a “Jethro” physical Sim via Amazon (data + dedicated phone number for calls/SMS).
There was no meaningful difference in speed and quality of service though Mrs Vlad paid about three times what I paid for the eSim….(Her phone is too old for eSim)
I had access to AT&T and Verizon whereas she had access to both of those PLUS T-MOBILE networks

Oasis “ditch dynamic pricing” for North American leg of tour but are still using Ticketmaster…
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberIn have My Bike Radar Traffic installed on my Edge 530 should I want to see any post-ride statistics on what my Varia has experienced (I rarely do).
Me too.
I hope once more users capture such data and load it up into the cloud, then “busy roads/dangerous roads” (based on volume and speed of traffic) can be incorporated into route planning apps [though my Garmin Edge Explore 2 has an option to Avoid High Traffic Roads, so maybe Garmin is harvesting such data already…?]
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberIf you know which specific bike the hire companies use, you can look up the manufacturers website for brake spec. If they use SRAM or Magura, they can be flipped easily enough without messing around with hoses….
Other makes (Hayes???) may also flip easily but I’ll let others chirp in.
Shimano WILL require switching hoses….

Transmissions: the story of Joy Division and New Order. 2 series of podcasts, including interviews with the band and other movers and shakers of the time.
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberHave you done an FTP test? If so, does IndieVelo have the correct number for you? Also, does it have your weight correct?
Also, check your other metrics (age, height, age etc)
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberA quick bump for this.
I tried IndieVelo for first time (on my Android phone) yesterday and was impressed at the ease of connecting my trainer and HR monitor.
One “complaint” (which is possibly premature) is there’s a lot of small text on screen which is just about impossible to read on a Pixel 6a so I’ll need to investigate either cleaning up screen display (there are some config options I’ve not played with yet) or a need to figure out how to screen cast to an old monitor I have.
Another observation: I did their ramp test and topped out around 400w but IndieVelo has recorded my FTP at 175w which seems badly off (I was expecting around 250-280w).
Does anyone know whether there’s an option to display “target power” in workout mode?

You prefer the feel of 2 pot SLX over MT7’s at 90kg riding steep and techy terrain predominantly?!?!
To be fair, I don’t usually ride the hard tail in that terrain but on other (mellower) trails, the SLX 2 Pots have impressed me.
EDIT TO ADD:
My local descents are around 15 minutes max and relatively slow but steep and I just returned from a trip where the descents where a LOT faster/open and much longer. This trip I took the hard tail and that’s where the SLX impressed me…
How long does it take for the “wandering bite point” to manifest itself? i.e. you know immediately you’ve bought a bad pair as the problem exists from new or does it slowly occur as the brakes get older? Have I just been lucky with my pair??
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberIs it because he is good and beats your favourite driver?
Sure, he has talent but he doesn’t half moan a lot….and I’m not even gonna mention his hypocrisy and dirty driving ;-)
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberLol, I thought I had too many but now feel inadequate compared to you lot!
8vlad_the_invaderFull MemberI, for one, would be more than happy if Max actually followed up his own threat and just f**ked off and took his dad with him…
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberI thought the extra point for fastest lap was restricted to top ten finishers only. I guess that’s another rule change I missed…
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberLevel 4 with 179 points. I don’t recall joining any Garmin Challenges so no idea about this but amusingly, most of my points have been earned by being a Sleep Savant….
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberThere’s an Android app! I’ll give that a try when I’m back from holiday. Thanks for the heads-up
1vlad_the_invaderFull MemberIt creates a QR code that I screenshot. Then in phone network settings scan the qr code from photo. I can activate it from there but the simOptions app says it will turn on automatically
This step is unbelievably stupid as you cannot read a QR code which exists on the device with the same device.
It’s fine if you are travelling with another person and you can Bluetooth the screen shot to their phone to then scan on your own phone (or do the same on a computer) but if you’re travelling solo and don’t have internet access or another device, you have to follow the manual process which usually involves copy and pasting things like access point names deep down in the phones setting.
It’s all doable if you’re reasonably competent and have access to the help documentation but that’s not always possible. Anyway, once installed, it’s a doddle to toggle the eSim on/off and top up with extra credit, if needed
For anyone travelling to the US, its worth checking which of the three main providers (AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon) has best coverage in the area you are travelling. Arialo seem to only have agreements with Verizon and T-Mobile whereas (from memory) Yessim have agreements with all three. I presume the same applies for other countries. Either way, my Pixel 6a can automatically switch between providers based on signal strength.
vlad_the_invaderFull Member4. Once purchased is it idiot proof as to how to use it?
Based on my experience of Arialo and Yessim for US travel, most definitely NOT idiot proof though I think I understand better now. (Pixel 6a FWIW)
My phone allows me to have a single regular (physical) SIM plus multiple eSims and both providers I’ve tried make it abundantly clear that an eSim cannot be “reused” once deleted so I’ve no idea why those posters above are expecting an eSim to be transferable between phones (and why even bother as they are so cheap anyway?).
The actual installation process I found quite fraught as until you’re at your destination, you won’t know whether it’s worked or not (free wifi at arrival airport should help if you need to look up the eSim help documentation – and you might need to as you have to manually type in some fields VERY deep down in the phone settings (ie typically Access Point Names).
Neither Arialo or Yessim processes are fully automated and their documentation isn’t great.
I found that most eSims for US are data only and once you install a data only eSim it doesn’t appear to be upgradeable to include phone calls/SMS. Anything which DOES provide a phone number for call/SMS purposes are usually 30-50% more expensive than just data.
In case you don’t know, you buy an eSim for a certain period (ie one day, one week, 15 days, 30 days etc etc) but can “renew” to extend the initial period and/or buy more data if you use more than anticipated. You can renew a eSIM without the periods being continuous eg I had a 15 day eSim for my trip to the US last year which I was able to re-use this year as I hadn’t deleted it.
On my phone at least, I can maintain the physical SIM for phone calls and SMS (so you can receive incoming & make outgoing calls or texts on your UK number) and use the eSIM for data only or some other combination.
FWIW, I also learnt recently that you can install an eSim in phones without eSim capability:
https://esim.5ber.com/?language=en-US
though I believe that involves some forward planning.
To re-iterate, I don’t know why some posters have deleted the eSims or why they would want to. Unless their phones only allow a single eSim or they need to use a different eSIm providers for different geographical regions, I’d not delete the eSim – rather, I’d just de-activate it in the phone settings. (Granted, I learnt this the hard way and I’ve only tried eSims for US travel – I was pleasantly surprised I could de-activate a one year expired Arialo eSim)
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberTo paraphrase a lot of that written above, the right tool for the job in hand would be my preference ;-)
vlad_the_invaderFull Member@tall_martin: it’s definitely not too small.
Anyway, Castelli do free returns and even at sale price I want a proper fit so it’s going back…
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberTed also did something for GCN+ (if you have a subscription…)
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberHow did we miss Newey being confirmed at AM (@ £30m per year!)?
5vlad_the_invaderFull Memberanother day of mopping up after a shower beckons methinks
Or, shock horror, a day without a shower ;-)
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberSo a call from the garage. The service dept have been quite proactive and im impressed tbh. Taken the caliper to a local engineering firm and will pick it up on monday. Then see what the damage is.
Keep us informed! Fingers crossed for you!
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberFortunately, I very rarely need to use the VPN. Most time (99%+) I’m NOT connected to the VPN…
vlad_the_invaderFull MemberKeep skiving and start looking elsewhere?
Retirement beckons ;-)
1vlad_the_invaderFull MemberThanks Cougar but (bit of a curveball), I’m not in the UK (or Europe for that matter).
;-)
Outside or any moral/legal justification or otherwise, are they any Windows settings I can look at (or folders in the Program Files directory) which might indicate keyloggers and camera/mic overrides are in place?
For context but not really relevant to my technical question (STW discussions always go off at tangents at the earliest opportunity!):
(a) It is HIGHLY unlikely I can somehow wrangle even a moderately “large” pay-off but being fired would prevent me getting (modest) government benefits.
(B) I’ve been paid below market rates for many years. In fact, I haven’t had any sort of pay raise for at least 6 years (I’m not motivated by cash) so firing me and replacing me WILL cost the company more money as they won’t be able to hire anyone with the equivalent of my current salary.
(C) I “skive” because of lack of resources. The boss simply will not concentrate on delivering a reasonable number of projects properly and always stacks up more (mostly half-assed) projects than we have resources for. Hence, i have some periods of time where there are no developers to work on “my” projects. He is incapable of sticking to any plan (he has lots of plans and they change every day. And different employees are told about different plans on different days)….
Anyway, up til recently, I’ve been sanguine about most of this shit but something needs to change….
