Have a new style one. Lovely bike, although heavy. My big problem was ridiculous amounts of heel clip. Couldn’t run a road crankset in the end because of this, and ended up with a HT2 MTB one to fix the q factor issue.

Not really a problem as I use mine for a training bike for cross.

Can anyone offer a view of the ‘ride’ of this type of fork over the standard tubed carbon fork, either these or the niner ones for example?

There’s an hour’s worth of semi cheeky riding in the woods at Little Milford.

Was used as a venue for Midlands XC this season, with a bit of new course cut beyond the gravel. Worked well apparently, although I didn’t race.

Useful as a race pace skills loop etc, but not really a full-on destination as such

Raced with a chap at SITS who had built this.

Have to say I was really impressed, and it rode ok too from the little spin I had….

I live just outside the city and have to say I’m not the hugest fan of the city as a place to live. That said, it’s quite a nice shopping experience, more from a small shop angle than a shopping mall side of things.

There’s an Evan bike shop, and Freewheel, which is small but ok. Hockley is a small district of boutique shops and retro stuff. Other than that, it’s really just another city centre.

There’s a castle to visit if you fancy too…

Prendas Super Roubaix are really good gloves. Hard wearing and warm….had a pair for a year, and they look like new after loads of use and washes

Surprised how little rain it actually took to destroy that course. Thought it was totally uninspiring even before it rained though. The second half sections across and along the fields were just awful, and that final wooded section was badly thought out imo.

woo hoo. One of my favourite races this year!

You got them with the frame (new) apparently! Had the same trouble when I bought mine second hand. You’ll find that you can simply use a couple of those washer things that screw onto presta valves. Had mine running like that for a couple of years.

The fact that you’ve posted about it on here means that you obviously care. A lot of people would have laughed it off or made some bullshit excuse about how it wasn’t really their fault. You also accepted the blame and apologised.

By my simple logic you therefore seem like a decent person.

If you worked for me I’d probably ask you to help fix the systems and procedures so you can’t mess it up again, but if it was a genuine mistake, and you’ve not got a catalogue of similar mistakes behind you, we could chalk it up to experience.

Unless there’s lasting repercussions, learn from it, put it behind you and move on.

Really pleased with mine. Considering it’s a £250 carbon frame it’s bloody amazing really. I went for the really yuck green and yellow colour scheme ;)

Went up there whilst on holiday last year. Some riding to be had for sure. Think I made up a loop that started in Canaston, out across the old airfield, back through Canaston past the ruined chapel then down into Minwear wood. Probably managed a couple of hours of riding. Failing that, it’s the bogfest that is the Preselis! ;)

Taff – yes, probably me. Trailraker on the back, mud X on the front, rigid forked hardtail. It actually felt like cheating at some points ;)

‘I can’t believe how some people were riding some bits that I thought were unrideable. There were sections from the fire road after the shooting ground up to the field at the top and they were able to ride it all. I was having trouble pushing. Just a totally different level.’

I managed to ride most of that each time. Trailraker on the back ;)

Brilliant. Love the Metric remix too.

He needs to take his camelbak off though. Be much quicker without that ;)

I’d probably say go secondhand. World appears to be full of road bikes that people only rode once and put in the garage!

You could probably get a base model (maybe previous year?) Specialized Allez new for that price.

If you want to build something it might be worth it.

I shopped carefully over time and built a Kinesis Racelight T up with Sora groupset and new Shimano budget wheels for <£400 for the winter

My Grandad was a mid-upper gunner. Angus Robb. Believe he was a Warrant Officer? Flew with the Pathfinders. Nice thread idea.

Your name on your bike is almost acceptable in a ‘pretending to be a top pro’ sort of way. It’s when you’ve got your name on your helmet too that I chuckle…..

Did the 24 solo last season. Good, varied course. Keeps you on your toes. Some real slippy roots in the damp. Climbs are not crazy but do take it out of you in the end. Couple of tricky bombhole sessions, especially when you’re tired.

General 24 solo advice? Start slow. Get slower

I’m in the same market as the OP and am interested to read some of these opinions. Probably looking for something race-oriented tho…

Amongst all this bickering and bantering, no-one’s pointed out the inherent daft-ness in giving names to bits of path in the woods. Does it actually matter what they’re supposedly called?!

There’s a pub down the road from Pines. Never had a problem parking there and riding up to the entrance. Probably worth either being subtle about it, or having a pint afterwards. Watch out for the deer in the dark. Those eyes are spooky!

I find it a bit over-rated tbh. It’s a nice ride, but never quite lives up to the hype. I think the dry/wet factor does affect things though.

Not got any specific recommendations, but do a search for Under The Thatch – they have great cottages all over the place.

I thought it was just me who didn’t rate the Woodbine.

A few years back I overheard a MXer getting a telling off for eating a Mars bar in there that he hadn’t bought there. This was after him and 3 mates had bought and ate full english breakfasts all round!!

Ride it carefully and considerately. And at night?

I’ve ridden SSSIs before if that makes you feel better ;)

If your bars and stem matched your post (ie you got some KCNC ones), you could probably knock a few grams off.

Lovely, lovely bike though. (and I don’t like the ‘look’ of Scotts normally)

    Derby-based aren’t they?

I’ve considered their bikes before, but you can’t seem to get them frame-only. Agree re web presence – pretty awful.

They sponosor a race team with Bikemagic too.

Are Halfords actually selling the 1970s? Can you go and buy it? How big is it?
