If Ive got to change the rear mech and probably cassette plus of course the shifters, may as well for a group set. Guess I need to save for another couple of months.

    Thanks for all the help.

WIth the loose stem simply popped over the steerer tube with nothing tightened I firstly added the bars and did up the four bolts holding the bar to the front of the stem.

I then tightened the single preload bolt that goes down the middle of the steerer tube. It was then that I heard the single snap sound whilst tightening.

It wasnt very tight, eg no more than 5Nm, stopped at that point so not sure whether Ive done damage or needs tightening further.

    thanks

Hmm, ok ali Whyte 829 then?

Mine arrived from bike-discount.de today and includes full bleed kit and is in original box. Black version including alloy/silver collar.

Note: Remember to pump up to 250psi with shock pump. My other unit from merlin needed pumping up on delivery. Which it doesnt mention in the manual.

Ive got a Whyte 829, which is a better spec than the 29C and 100 quid cheaper. Slightly heavier but not enough to be a problem. I preferred the spec over the 29C as its Shimano and Fox rather than SRAM and RockShox.

Fantastic bike. Im 5’9 and have the medium frame which is around 18″. Loads of grip and goes uphill like nothing Ive ridden before.

    Fantastic!
I have an ali asr5 an on-One 456c and a whyte 829. Asr 5 is the dogs you know whats for trails my way. Is as good up hill as downhill and is super light. Note that the carbon frame doesnt have cable runs for dropper seat post whereas ali does. Have a demo u will love it

Nah, forget a full sus and go for a Whyte 829 or 29C (Hard tails)…..cracking bikes. The 829 has the best spec for the money…XT running gear, SLX brakes and shifters, with fox floats up front. Good value @ 1899.

I get up my usual hills still in front middle cog rather than granny ring on my 26ers and alot quicker too. Very stable downhill and on the twisty trails. Have been very impressed as its almost made my C456 redundant, if it wasnt for needing a stealth night bike that Im not worried about crashing.

i just brought one of these with everything included and this will sound dumb, but the collar you speak of is that the silver alloy clamp thing? Where does that go? I have scoured the instruction and can’t find mention of it any where

Dont worry, your’re not the only one. Still dont know what its for.

    Interesting.
I have a 30.9 ordered from the german site for one of my bikes and received a 31.9 from merlin today for another bike.

Out of the box, the merlin one needs bleeding (very slow return, only about 70%) but has black collar, no silver clamp as per photo above. It didnt come with a bleed kit, but luckily have one already but need to buy the fluid. The merlin one cost me 188.

Will be interesting what the german version turns up with,

I managed to fit Avid 185mm rotor in the end, but very tight.
It was a pain and I needed the Avid adapter. The shimano one I was trying to use caused many a harsh word shouted in the garage. Got the alternative drop out from On-One, but didnt need it in the end.

    Thanks all,
    With the XR4’s @ 11.98 each, I think I’ll give them a go.
If they dont suit after a few weeks of thrashing around, I’ll try the Clutch SX’s.

TooTall- “You sound like a petty stockbroker living in Surrey who thinks he is above those who need to use exercise areas rather than those who want to use them. Looking down your nose at those who use your desired playground to train to stay alive is unpleasant to say the least. “

I wish I was a petty stockbroker. If I was I’d buy a hundred acres of forest thus not need to cross MOD land.

Ive grown up around this area and have used MOD land since a kid (now in my late thirties). Im more hacked off about the MOD’s attitude towards dog walkers than MTBers. They go around highlighting dog poo with luminous spray paint and write ridiculous letters to local residents threatening closure because the troops dont like lying down in poo on night exercise.

All Im trying to say is that from local residents point of view, vast amounts of the land is UNUSED for 90% of the time, no matter what the MOD may say or think. Do they really need it, no I think they could reduce their land grabbing by 30-40% and still have adequate cover for training purposes.

If anything the use is going to drop as troop numbers will reduce over the next 10-50 years due to more use of technology and systems that mitigate the need to put soldiers lives at risk, something both the UK and US have learned to their detriment in the current “war” if you can really call it that (more like using war as an excuse for natural resource grabbing).

There can be reasonable half way house to this constant public vs MOD conflict, its just whitehall needs to haul itself into the twenty first century and ditch the stiff upper lip.

Hmm bit of a long thread now
The MOD has so much land around the surrey/hants/west sussex border
Its quite ridiculous as they hardly use it but in the last 6months are
Putting the frighteners on dog walkers and bikers. Agree that if red flags are up
Then We should steer clear, but when they rent it out to filming (eg latest
Bond film) for 3 months making thousands of pounds per day and still
Moan about dog walkers and bIkers then its double standards.

The MOD has too much land, its costing them (via us the tax payer) alot
to maintain when they could simply hand it over to the forestry commission or national trust. They simply dont need it all. They are just greedy you know whats. Whitehall is run by muppets who are stuck in the 50’s. 16 year old kids would be better snipers and war game strategists than a bunch of squaddies playing shootem ups on hankley common.

Ps using iphone so sorry for all the split sentances and capital letters

Woosh woosh noise normally indicates cavitation.
My 4 month old RP23 went back under warranty and I know a number of other peoples that have also gone back. I reckon there may have been a problematic batch at somepoint last year and they are still coming out of the woodwork.

But thats only for the woosh woosh of course.

I have a yeti ASR5 with a non kashima RP23 set to 2 with pressure at 160 (Im 73kgs) and I cant tell the difference between propedal on or off. I only bottom out the shock on hefty drop offs so I know the pressure is ok and its just come back from Mojo too.

So it doesnt suprise me in some circumstances the pro pedal doesnt make a difference.

Aparently the 2013 RP23 replacement is a radical change and will be a different league.

I cant recommend the Whyte 29’ers more.
I have an 829 rather than 29c as I preferred the spec (fox shock rather than Rockshox and XT over X9) and it goes uphill like nothing Ive ridden before and has soooo much grip on the downhills.

Its almost making my C456 redundant!

    Many thanks All,
Sounds like I need to keep at it. Didnt know about multi release cleats so will pick some up to see if that helps things initially.

Post ride I use it on crank and front mech, rear mech and cassette. Also use it to drive water out of the chain post wash, then wipe down chain and apply lube ready for next ride.

Wouldnt use it on anything else really apart from paint work. Be careful though as its very easy to contaminate pads which can get expensive.

My bikes always look like new after every ride.

All their shops are excellent. I use the Haslemere branch on probably too much of a regular basis. Back tomorrow to pick up my new Whyte 829…yum yum.

Last week was very quick. I too have some more on order from Monday.
Normally they process at within a day so you get it within 3 days, but this week is slightly slower, but hey I saved over 25% in the end so I dont mind a few more days.

Hmm, looks like everyone are selling multiple versions.
Chain reaction have three, two without bleed kits and one without.

How many different variants are there, do we have to be careful about which ones to purchase?

On-One seem to be doing them for 199.
Isnt that pretty much the same as the german sites?

Yes, tried 160 and 180 IS to post rear adapters, both shimano.
Will try a 200 next and/or the new rear drop out thats already in the post.

Thanks for all the help, will get there in the end. Glad it can be done and I havent wasted the cash on a rotor I cant use.

Interesting avid adapters must be unlike others. Have covered all bases by ordering new drop out and more adapters. Could go down in history as most expensive rotor upgrade ever. U would have thought these things would have been straight forward in this day and age

    variflex

What size is the adapter then as a 185 wouldnt do it on my juicy 5’s?

    variflex

    Phoned On-One.
I need a different drop out moving the caliper from inside the frame to the outside. The standard one will only go up to 160 which is why I was having problems. Should be sorted next week :o)

    Thanks all.

My five month old unit with less than 40 hours riding has gone back to Mojo under warranty. I agree, if you check all the various forums including this you will see quite a number have had issues, especially cavitation from fairly new.

Im starting to wonder whether there was a slightly duff batch manufactuered last year that are still working their way through the system.

Some shocks sit on new bikes in shops for some time before they are bought, so can take time to get used and then fail.

Alternatively, could the really cold weather been a problem, as I was riding several times in -5 to -9 weather. Perhaps the shocks dont like it too cold?

Hopefully Mojo will sort it so it lasts a reasonable time before its next service.

Ah, that would make sense then. Shame it doesnt state the spec on the website. Then again I should have checked I guess.

Only full Highball bikes for the first three months into the UK and thats 5 weeks away, so frames wont be out until the summer I guess. Shame as I want a custom build and do it myself as thats half the fun.

That changes things for me possibly. Perhaps a Lurcher is now in the cards….better get the sunnies out for the bright green decals.

Yes rebas are good value but fancy some 120mm rather than 100mm. Surprised rockshox don’t do 120mm 29ers

    variflex

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately even though unit is going back under warranty for cavitation, upgrade is still £170 so won’t bother this time round and will keep the money and put towards another bike build as its almost half the cost of a hard tail frame.
