Wasnt up there yesterday but ride up there 2 or 3 times a week. IMHO they should stop vehicles driving down the new fire road towards the gibbett. Too many walkers with kids and dogs for it to be safe. They should park where everyone else does and ride to the downhill trails. They should have a voluntary closure of the BOAT’s really as the moto cross bikes are a pain.

On One C456 with 140mm up front.
With your size and weight you can go for the small frame and build it up nice and light. Definitely rate the Hope EVO2 hubs and flow rims as mentioned by someone else.

Stick some nice Maxxis chunky tyres on and it will fly :)

I have a Yeti ASR5 and a C456. If I was lucky enough to go on such a trip I would take both :) as they are completely different beasts, but both GREAT fun.

You can get a C456 frame and forks for 749 or less for undecalled.

    They are excellent.
Can be used on their own, but I find no matter what light you have on the bars a helmet mounted one is a great addition as it moves to where you look which makes twisty trail riding at night alot easier.

The MaxxD is very bright and does last 3 hours on full as claimed, and as you say has no leads or external battery pack. You dont notice its weight on the bars and the quick release clamps are excellent. That and a joystick are the best night riding kit investment I have made. I did over 40k of night rides last week and on average run 20K+ every week and they have run faultlessly for over 8 months now.

Ps. biggest problem with helmet lights is that get knocked off by low hung branches, so if thats your only light on a fast downhill trail you can end up crashing quite badly.

Interesting thread. Hope the fallen biker is ok.

As for pedal and spoke, must have met Howard on a bad day then.
Was over that way with some local friends when what I thought was my BB started to make a horrific grinding noise. As we were passing the shop I popped in for some “friendly” advice as to whether they reckoned it would be ok to continue with or to stop. From 10ft away I was told it would need a strip down but he didnt have time and basically given the cold shoulder, possibly as I wasnt one of his regular SC riding customers.

So given I didnt want to do any further damage I left the others to the rest of the ride and packed up, went home.

On the way back popped into my LBS in haslemere and within 5mins they had identified the problem and fixed it….the rear drop out bolts were loose. Re-greased and set me on my way for free with a smile.

Shame, as now I wont go near P&S even if I was in dire straits and if I wanted in future to buy an SC, I would seek an alternative dealer.

Just shows what having a bad day can do to future custom especially as I was considering a High Ball recently.

On One Lurcher is very good. Ive just got back from a ride and one of the guys has a relativelt new one and we completed 20k of mixed riding with some very technical downhill twisty stuff and it coped really well for a 29er.

    They are great frames.
I bought a raw black one at the beginning of the year and love it. Its my stealthy night bike.

The wife borrowed it the other week as her cheap evans special threw a wobbly 5 mins before going out for a ride. When she came back she refused to give it back despite the medium frame being too big for her.

So, being such a nice chap I am, for our 10th wedding anniversary a week later I bought her the small painted frame in black with grey decals and built it up with all the components off mine. It looks fantastic.

It was a good excuse to upgrade mine to XT and transfer some other bits between bikes.

    So I ended up with:

    1. Upgraded super stealth night bike
    2. Happy wife ….doesnt happen often ;)
    3. Upgraded components on my full sus.

    Happy Days!

PS, It looks rather tasty in yellow! I reckon the all red frame would look good built up..anyone got any piccies?

TO be honest, I ended up having purchased some very nice cree torches and several types of mounts, going down the more robust bike light route. I just found they werent quite as good as the hype with the permanent risk of burning your house down and dodgy electrics.

I ended up buying a couple of exposure lights that never get too hot, can be left on charging for hours or even days on end. The pluses in the end were:

    1. All in one design. No need for battery packs which are a right pain to be honest.
    2. Can last for 3 hours on full power (both joystick and MaxD)so no need for carrying extra batteries.
    3. Lower risk of burning your house down
    4. 2 year warranty (really handy as they are 15mins down the road from me)
    5. Mounting brackets are excellent with no need to faf about
    6. Brighter than the average magicshine and equivalent

Although they are 3-4 times the price, when you take the risk and the time/effort factor into it, they are worth it and you can concentrate more on your riding and bike than a frigging light. Mine get used at least twice a week for 2 hours min all year round. The only problem so far is a failed charger and that was replaced without even showing a receipt.

    Anyway, each to their own.

Have fun with whatever you do.

you sure it’s the seatpost/seattube interface creaking?

my c456 amplified every noise 10 fold. The slightest squeak ended up sounding like Animal from the Muppets was going mental inside the frame.

Maybe try a different seatpost to confirm it’s not the reverb makign the noise and the frame just pickign it up?

Good point. Will try carbon paste and a different seatpost.

Guess it depends on which type of single track. Round my way its very hilly, so trails are hard work and great fun also as there are b ig climbs but also great decents, but not very well suited to single speed. Again it totally depends on what you want out of a bike.

If you dont need to follow a trail with it, why mount it on the bike.
Thats why I went for a watch, as you can use it for running and or swimming and its less likely to come off in a crash and get lost.

I know several people who have lost theirs on the trail only to realise 2k later and have to go back and attempt to find it. One managed to, the other didnt.

    Worth thinking about anyway.

I guess it all depends on what you want out of a GPS.
I recently wanted to be able to see the time, distance, elevation and calorie burn at a glance rather than chasing trails. I also wanted to be able to download the GPS data.

So instead of a bike mounted specific unit I went for the Garmin 910XT watch, which is FANTASTIC!! but I guess it all depends on what you want to get out of it.

Looking at the new range, the 829 spec doesnt exist anymore, so you either have to go cheaper with less spec or a 1×10 which isnt any good for decent singletrack. Either way, they look pretty good.

I just find the 829 a really fun bike which is completely different to my other bikes which arent slouches either.

Glad you enjoyed it Ali :)
Now you know the secret of getting up hills quickly.
Was a good ride out with the guys, long may the weather hold.
Have fun in the Alps if I dont speak before, take a few photo’s to make us jealous!

They are available now. Just upgraded one of my bikes with full 2013 XT set including clutch rear mech. Also had to buy a spare as problems getting xtr spare parts for my yeti that mashed itself. I’m paying about 84 before 15% discount and my lbs fit for free for xt clutch rear mech. Xt clutch rear mech looks good but I don’t think it looks as solid as xtr

You should definitely test ride a Whyte 829.
Excellent spec compared to competition and not heavy, and actually works on the twisty bits and is super fast on the flat and uphill. Best 29er Ive ridden, and of course british.

Definitely worth a gander as its a bit of a looker also.

Many thanks to richiethesilverfish as his team.
New rear triangle arrived at LBS on Friday and fitted ready to run by 5pm the same day. So just under a week from broken bike to fully sorted, which is excellent.

Holding off riding whilst I wait for a rear bolt through kit which was ordered on Friday along with new wheelset.

    Thanks again

    Many thanks richiethesilverfish,
They’ll be in touch tomorrow I would have thought. They are a great bunch and I know between them and you guys, I’ll be back out on what is the best bike Ive had in 10 years very soon.

Like all things mechanical, these sorts of things happen occasionally (come from family of engineers) and are almost impossible to eradicate from what looks like quite a complex manufacuring/assembly process these days. Im glad Yeti provide a comprehensive warranty service to go with it :)

Ive asked them to look into upgrading to the solid rear axle at the same time, I guess this is just an extra conversion kit I would need. Just need to find out possibilities with my wheelset.

    Kind Regards
    J

    Interesting Guys, many thanks.
Im starting to wonder if its the play in the 15mm QR skewers that may be causing it as of course its probably one of the weakest points of any bike. Any of those that have failed had the bolt through kit on?

Interesting that Silverfish & Yeti may have queried Shimano kit as its part of their supported and supplied kits, so in effect they have already underwritten tried/tested & approved use already.

+1 for C456 or even the On-One Lurcher.

Did the same thing with my old components from a 2008 spec epic. Bought new frame and forks for £600 all in and built up a fantasic C456. Its primarily my stealth night bike. Nice and fast and really strong.

Or buy a whyte 829, fantastic bike with plenty of grip and very quick even on the twisty bits

    Thanks Everyone,
Unfortunately its a 2008 lid so warranty claim would be out of the question I suppose. Shame, as it was only used once between 2008 and 2011 when I got back into MTB’ing every week.

Will try the cable tie for a while, good idea!

A clean and pushing the pressure up slightly higher (a recent return from SRAM on another reverb I have was 300PSI) and a bleed has sorted it. Looks like there may be an air leak as when bleeding alot of air was released. Will see how it goes. It could just be that when I shortened the hose when new I didnt bleed properly….time will tell.

    Many thanks All

Thanks will lube the seal as it has been hosed…ooops should I say sponged down a few times recently. Will also bleed.

Thanks everyone. Just love STW, its the only forum I know about where you can post a question and have answers within minutes!

Ps. What type of lube for the seal?

I must have OCD, as I wash the bike after every ride if even dusty. My brain tells me that if Ive spent so much on something I should take pride in what it looks like not just how well it performs :) Should make it last longer if properly maintained also.

    Each to their own though.

As the battery (standard one) only lasts 2-2.5 hours you dont need anything more than a 16GB card. Ive got a 32GB and never use anywhere near its capacity.

    Hope that helps.

but if you can prove you took it out (eg paperwork) you can argue bringing it back in is not subject to import tax. HMRC couldnt argue with that logic if you have the paperwork (eg oversized baggage ticket)

A friend of mine, picked up a cheap second hand £50 bike here, and took it on holiday to the US in a bike case. Whilst there bought a new one (nice Yeti 575), skipped the £50 quid bike and brought the new one back in the same case. No import tax or VAT as technically he took the bike out there and brought it back again ;)

By shopping around you should be able to build up an XT based ASR5 for around £3500.

I did mine for not much more with XTR back in November using some of the “spend 100 pounds and get a 50 pound voucher” from CRC at the time which helped.

The cheapest way to buy a groupset is via the German sites especially with the strong pound at the moment.

    So with some haggling:

    ASR5 Frame and Fox 32 140mm forks = £2k
Group set (XT including brakes) = £490
    Disks = £60
    Wheels = £400
    Easton Haven Bar = £70
    Easton Haven Stem = £70
    Tyres = £60
    Grips = £20
    Reverb Seatpost = £180

    Cost = £3350

so room for more goodies like headset, saddle etc.

Go for it, its a great bike!

Ive got a similar problem in that its losing pressure over a number of days. Its going back under warranty. There are a number floating around like it possibly.

Demo an ASR5 or even the new SB66 as well as EVO. My LBS Yeti ASR5 owner has ridden an SB66 recently and is raving about it.

One of mine is doing a similar thing. Its losing pressure over a 10 days period. So its back to Wiggle next week as it looks like its the seals.
