get a career that benefits society

If only society had a choice as to whether or not you get to inflict yourself and your barely formed semiliterate opinions upon it. Oh well, maybe you’ll grow up in the job…

Maxicosi mura 4. bit different, good n stable, quite bulky, and a little heavy when folded. Recommended. With the addition of a maxicosi car seat it should last the boy from birth until he doesn’t need one any more…

The main thing is you don’t see a million Chav mums pushing them round the town centre all day long.

Your insurance is valid without an MOT, and you can drive an untaxed vehicle on the road, so long as it is to a prebooked MOT appointment. I had the misfortune to test this out a couple of years ago, when I was involved in a fairly significant RTC Whilst en route to an MOT station in an untaxed vehicle without an MOT. insurance payed out, police were happy.

…SORN it get it back on the road before the tax and insurance run out

Eh? Isn’t that missing the point? SORNing is stating that the vehicle is going to be kept off road and therefore does not require taxing or insuring, by law. And why on earth cant you reinsure it? Just takes a credit card, surely?

Best typo of the night; Apparently Elfin is entitled to his onion…

Seriously though Elfin, you come across as a very articulate and compassionate person. I think it a great shame that you seem to make the mistake of regarding your opinion of what is right as a fact rather than just opinion, in this instance. I feel that your arguments are somewhat weakened by their preachy, somewhat patronising nature. Maybe try to work on that?

That said, I respect you opinion, even if I disagree with it on this occasion. Regards.

Beating with a baton a person who is lying on the ground is not and can never be reasonable use of force.

Of course it can, if it stops them from getting up and fighting, or running away, makes them let go ofthe brick/knife/broken bottle etc that they may be holding… It may or may not be in this case, we don’t actually know, do we?

TJ, why do you persist in using the term youth? That’s one of those ‘we don’t know the facts’ thingies… according to another thread the first looter to be convicted was 31…

    Okay, my two cents.

Firstly, we have no idea what age the people on bikes are, so any ‘child abuse’ lines of argument are null and void, although even if they are minors, they appear highly likely to be above the age of criminal responsibility.

Secondly, there’s a lot of conjecture and assumptions being made. We don’t know what has happened leading up to or following this event.

Thirdly, an awful lot of fuss is being made about reasonable and appropriate force; this is very much dependant on the situation and certainly NOT for anyone here to decide. However if the force used stopped the individual from making an escape, allowed him to be neutralised as a threat towards the police and public and yet he was still able to get up unaided straight afterwards, it certainly seems fairly reasonable and appropriate to me, (and I suspect quite a few others).

Fourthly, arrested?? Seriously? Cells full, paperwork backing up, resources required to obtain a conviction… We expect our police officers to exercise judgment of this type every Friday and Saturday night, let alone at times of mass civil unrest, looting, rioting, naughtiness, whatever you want to call it. We don’t actually know whether Nyone was detained for sure, but I personally trust the officer’s intelligence led judgement as to whether it is necessary.

Good luck to my colleagues in all of the emergency services in dealing with these extremely difficult circumstances. Stay safe.

Probably fairly slow at such a peak time, but considerably better since the active traffic management went online (hard shoulder at peak times etc). This is on my commute, and its rarely a major problem by the time I come through (1845ish), although Fridays are a bit worse than the other days of the week.

I respect his right to be Muslim, I even respect that he feels a need to deface road furniture with meaningless yet inflamatory stickers. But that horrible ginger beard REALLY offends my eyes on aethetic grounds.

On a seperate note, if Islam isn’t a ‘race’ accepted, I presume Christianity isnt a race either… How come it is acceptable to think of Judaism can be considered a race? Just asking…

On another seperate note, I sense imminent thread closure, and possible banning…

I didn’t realise some folk could see infra-red. Must make your telly remote look like a torch!

I’m thinking it may not be a pure infrared flash then, especially given it’s bright purple appearance…

, but only emit a faint infra-red flash.”

Well that’s nonsense, (no offence Ernie) it’s retina searingly bright, especially at night, badly affects your night vision immediately afterwards.

Truvelos flash in your face (purple, blinding) gatsos flash behind you. I have noticed that some gatsos seem to trigger when you approach them at above limit speeds on the opposite side of the road, but I’ve never received an NIP from one in this manner.

I can’t really bring anything to this debate that hasn’t already been eloquently (and less so) said; just that the BBC is one of the few good things left about this country.

If it were to go, we would all miss it, of that I feel sure.

Oh and +1 to paying it if it weren’t compulsory, although the fact that it is, is genius. 10 million or so Sun reading brainwashed murdochozombies paying for me to listen to GQT, the Archers, The Now Show and I’m sorry I haven’t a clue etc goes a tiny way towards redressing some of the cruel imbalances in life… (like x factor)

Why would I mean TATA…..before you point out they fund JLR and tell the management what to do.I have a feeling this decision didn’t come from that high up the food chain though more than happy to be told otherwise

Fair one, who knows where the decision is made. However i should imagine that Tata expect JLR to urn a profit, and that is increasingly difficult with the expensive to produce Defender.

cant they upgrade them to bring them inline with the regs?

Probably, anything is possible. But it would probably be prohibitively expensive, on a vehicle that is already expensive to make. The same thing happened in the US a few years ago. The Yanks can no longer buy new defenders, but still love them, which had a really interesting effect on used prices… eg:pricey landy

    v8ninety

JLR have decided they might just kill off the defender.

    Don’t you mean Tata?

Defender will live on. Probably made in Brazil or India or somewhere where labour is cheap enough to make its old fashioned labour intensive manufacturing proccess a bit more cost effective. Meanwhile Solihull will produce a new green envirohybrideurobox on stilts that will sell like hotcakes because it looks chunky and drives like a modern car…

    I’ll keep my 90 ta.

This is nothing to do with religion. its to do with adequate signage… Roads around a church near me are regularly made temporarily ‘no parking’ for all sorts of events; weddings, funerals, various god bothering stuff. Meh.

Maybe i’m wrong, but don’t those dotted lines at the end of the slip mean ‘give way’ ? A driver on the slip can only enter lane 1 of the motorway when safe to do so? Therefore, if Lane 1 is full of traffic that is unable to move out the vehicle on the slip must give way?

And therin lies the problem. What you say is obviously legally true. BUT. The only time that lane one is actually ‘full of traffic’ is when there is nose to tail congestion. When traffic is moving at normal motorway speeds there is always enough of a gap to be able to match speeds and filter in safely so long as you maintain good situational awarness. The gap in traffic you need if travelling at the same speed as traffic is what? 5-6 car lengths? then obviously open up a two second space with the vehicle in front. If you end up stationary at the end of a slip road, you’ll then need a gap big enough for you car to be able to accelerate to around 60 mph, which is huge and very unlikely if it is at all busy.

    v8ninety
    Full Member

What really irks me is when people in cars perfectly capable of travelling at 60+ mph drive on a two lane motorway at 50 mph, forcing wagons to overtake at 56mph rather than keep backing off their speed limiter. When the road is busy it can cause miles of slow moving traffic, just ne aide some got hasn’t got the understanding/consideration to drive 6 mph faster. Also wagon drivers overtaking each other for miles and miles because one motor is limited to 55.7mph, and the other to 56.1…

Completely concur with what what fishd says. I’d stay well clear of series trucks unless you are a masochist. the 90s and 110s of the early eighties were a huge leap forward, with the application of technology that had already been around 10 years on the range rover classic. I own a 3.9 v8 on gas which I admit is incredibly impractical, but sounds and goes beautifully. The best real world engines are the 200 and 300 tdis for simplicity and reliability, plus the 300s were the first to get discs all around. Avoid the turbo Ds, as fishd says, renowned to blow up. Bad maintainence or not, crap engine. Td5s are apparently good and go well, but not my cup of tea.

You really could use one for a daily driver, I did for many years and loved it. It just depends on where and how far you want to drive it. I now commute 66 motorway miles a day, and could not think of a worse car to do it in.

Last little pro landy factoid; statistically the safest car on the road. Nothing to do with crash testing, just that they don’t tend to be driven fast, and when they do crash, they tend to be heavier than the thing that they hit, on average.
