    Update to above –

My SO has a letter stating that her contract will terminate at the end of June. The info regarding an extension to the contract has only been given verbally. No other docs have been given/seen.

if you are spending that much on a hammock you would be better off buying a warbonnet blackbird. I do have a Hennessy to try out a zipper mod rather than use the velco entry in the bottom.

Its also quite easy to make your own. My pertex hammock – http://www.bikeandbivi.co.uk/php/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8

A bug net will be added to my newest one at some point. Cost of making minus my time, approx £40-£50 for a single layer with all the suspension gubbins. It very much depends on the fabric used.

Lots of plans and ideas on the hammock forum site – http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/?

The snugpak UQS are still very bulky, the size of a 3 season synthetic sleeping bag and quite heavy. I have made several down vesrions of the same size etc but using down and pertex. Check out – http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/forum.php in the makers market.

Hammock socks can add a few degrees of warmth as well and super easy to make. The material needs to be pretty light and breathable. Essentially its a tube with draw cord ends. Cost £10 max and an hours worth of faffing. http://www.bikeandbivi.co.uk/php/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15

I had this issue last week. Done a search and saw a few tips –

Use a dremel and cutting disk – rubbish the heat makes the plastic core swell and expands the metal brade.
Use a hacksaw – same issue as above, plus takes ages

I used my park wire cutters but made sure that the hose remained in as much of s straight line as possible when cutting. I also used a screwdriver to hold the olive open a little more when I placed it on the hose.

GF’s Mum has a Ka, everyone I have seen tends to rust on the lower edge of the cap, even without damage from a fuel pump.

Is it a Ford Ka? Seems to be a common place for rust for some reason.

    I prefer wearing a mountaineering/walking jacket.

Currently have a montane atomic DT stretch. The chances are if I need a waterproof jacket it’ll be when I’m in arse end of nowhere. If I was on the fells/mountains walking I’d want good protection. This doesnt change when I’m on the bike.

I find biking jackets don’t offer me the fit or protection that I’m after.

I run Office 2011 on the Mac and 2010 for the PC at work. No issues transferring between the two. The only thing the mac side doesnt have is the database.

I also have VM ware but to be honest hardly ever use it.

To keep me focussed until the trip I plan to do a number of smaller trips in the NE. I’ll be posting my exploits over the next few months on a site I have just created – http://www.bikeandbivi.co.uk/ its just a forum at the minute with a basic format, but that will develop. It’s in its infancy at the moment, but I hope that it will build into a useful resource for all.

Signed up, sounds like a great idea. Good luck with the site.

Thanks, quite a few have signed up already.

I am planning on doing the coast to coast this summer and will knock up one of those stoves to try.

Anthony – what does the Lynx can stove look like on the inside? Is it just a cut off can or is it folded in.

River access in England/Wales is sketchy. If a river has access its out of fishing season in most cases. Start Nov – Eof March

For a canal a licence is needed – It used to be included as part of BCU fees

Remove the pivot bolt, then the axle and swing arm, then knock the bearings out. The SC tool is well worth money.

You can get new bearings for very little, although you need some non standard loctite when refitting them. Cant remember the number at the mo.

My bike is the 1st generation of the new shape. 2007. Since new the bearing had been repacked with rock n roll grease and swapped out once (last year). Never jetwashed the bike. Weekly rides in all weathers.

Its well worth putting some copper slip on the pivot axle when you refit. Siezed axles are not uncomon on some SC bikes.

I had an issue with mine when I used a Raceface crankset and an acros BB. Changed to a hope BB and Shimano XT crankset and have zero issues/ I think it was the cranks that were at fault.

DHX coil (pushed). 160mm Lyriks in pics. Its built tough but still pretty light.

Now running a pair of 2011 Vans (coil). Dont need the travel adjust.

I can’t rate the bike highly enough.
