right now on the online feed there’s nothing. Just sport.

Its pretty good. I still know what’s going on. There’s writing comes up on the screen to tell me who people are. Greg Rutherford, I’ve heard of him so he must be our national furthest jumping bestest guy or something… And there’s a stern old man with a white flag. Don’t why he keeps surrendering, maybe he’s french…

    BBC – keep this up.

Not nonsense but this got a giggle from me on the guardian live blog

I think it’s safe to say Chambers has been forgiven, although I think you could put Rosemary West out there in a Great Britain vest and she’d get a huge ovation.

So you’re going on about how shit the BBC is after having enjoyed the suburb Olympic coverage.

eeeeeeeeh, I wouldn’t quite go that far. But yes the every sport live thing has been fantastic, the online feeds are of a very good quality, and the website has been great for keeping up to date when at work. Let me turn the commentary off on everything, then we’re superb. Now we’re just very good.

But yes, big up the breadth of BBC Olympic coverage, if not always the quality…

The licence fee is for radios 4 and 6. Some of BBC2, and Being Human.

Everything else keeps ‘those people’ occupied and off the streets. Its not P.C. but it works.

Molgrips, IMO its not the cycle lane spoiling the asthetic of that picture. Though all the metal bits both in and out of the cycle lane are a bit odd. Any idea what they’re all for/do?

    One last point from me.

I work part time in a TIC, and I am frequently being asked by visitors if there are any Cycle paths from the town. There aren’t but I ask what they mean to try and offer them the next best thing. Invariably what they mean is a sustrans style cycle path (along the old railway etc.), and often they are of the opinion we must have one, because we had a railway.

People (some people, that I am in no position to accurately quantify) want to cycle in a traffic free environment.

Also less cars, buses become more efficient and practical. When I lived in leeds I walked, because it often about the same speed as getting a bus…

Nope. Not interested in cycle paths, largely because they serve one section of the community and exclude everyone who can’t or doesn’t want to ride a bike

All cycle paths are defacto open to pedestrians too.

oooop – beaten to it, true though. 8)

Sustrans are apparently eyeing up the old railway bed through Nidderdale, that would be a fantastic route, and also allow easy linking up of trail sections in the lower valley. Sadly their recent 4 mile section from Bilton to Ripley took something like 4 yrs to get approved. Progress on these things is far too slow…

If it was on the small size then you would get a really manouverable bike, but too big could just be unridable, especially on the more technical stuff.

5cm can be the equivelent of two sizes different. I know its not what you want to hear, but I recommend saving your money until something more suitable pops up.

I have to say the north dales have been getting a pasting even today my favourite weather site –

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/observations/?tab=map&map=Rainfall

shows us just about getting away with it again.

I will see how Norwood trails are this weekend… (not widly optomistic if I’m honest)

We’re drying out pretty well here (Dales) considering, but last night was my first ride on one set of tracks this year (real life has denied me of much riding so far), and the change from months and months of downpoor was remarkable. trails washed out with thin narrow gulleys carved by what must have been shed loads of water, but barely visible from thriving undergrowth. And with the soluble soil washed out many of the trails are now just loose stones 6 inches deep.

Its also showing in the over grown state of the trails, they really have not been used this year, I’m gonna have to get a trail saw/machette. My hands got laserated by brambles.

I had a very soggy end to the ride. Sitting above Shaw Mills I looked back towards home. Dark clouds of doom. Looked over my shoulder towards Harrogate. Sunny. No choice but to put my head down and plough into the rain. Which was refreshing to begin with. But after 10 minutes or so, not so much.

    They aren’t on bikes.

Maybe they should be, I recently made the following misread when reading the BBC website

    Canoeing Slalom
    Canoeing Sprint
    Canoeing BMX
    Cycling Mountain Biking

    sounds quite exciting…

In the story linked to in the North Wales thread it says Wiggin “demanded” blah blah…

On the helmet stats, if the study only looked at cases where a helmet could have made a difference, then what proportion of all accidents is that? Not having a go (i know it seems I am), just very aware stats without context can be misleading.

    unklehomered
    Free Member

Death Data stats, When a cyclist is in collision with another vehicle, 71% chance of head injury being the COD when not wearing a helmet, 30% when wearing a helmet.

Just to check, the missing 41 percent still die yes? Just of other stuff, possibly slow and and more painfull… These are death stats not death and injury stats. There’s a hole in these numbers.

We need (and yes I’m being lazy I have no idea where to find them) numbers per 1000 of killed, injured, when in collision for both with and without a helmet.

If a cyclist is flung to the ground and then crushed, then a helmet may stop them receiving head wounds serious enough to kill them before they bleed to death… but it hasn’t saved their life.

I went years ago and we finished off with a fastest flying lap each and my brother puked trying to beat my time. We were hitting the banking that fast you could feel the compression in the corner on the black line. IT WAS AWESOME.

If I had the time I would love to try proper racing. its not a ride from a to b and it’s not just riding in circles, its balls to the wall racing as fast as you can

Hmmm… that has made a me a little more appreciative. And I also get the purity bit (on some of the races they do, others I’m not convinced).

Re Above. They must surely all be the same or World Records couldn’t work.

However, I had an idea. They shouldn’t be! Bugger that its boring. Instead all velodromes should be interesting shaped. Corners each way, Up and down. Yes? Or too much wine?

As a great man once said “I’m probably a little tipsy to talk about this now…”

Yes the should be a small circlip on the air side if memory serves. I was in some earlier this week. Big circlip damper side, small one air side..

    it’s about beating the others.
What don’t you get about that.

I get that, but [and I’m struggling to explain this] if its a race from A to B, then Yes, Go, Go now, get to B before those other people who are trying to to B before you… totally.

Even if it was a road circuit. But the velodrome, they’re all the same, its like Nascar for cyclists. And things like the madison its like they built a big thing and then had to think of stuff to do in it.

But like I say, still watch it. But with bewilderment and incomprehension on my face. Can’t just be me surely.

Is effort too much for you?

Not at all, I jiggered myself today taking in climbs for no reason other than they were there. But riding round and round in circles, on the same ground… no differing terrain. No, it escapes me. Road cycling I do get, and I’m often tempted. But no, I do not see it.

I’ll watch it… I am watching in replay now… but it is odd [to me].
