“Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something hurtling towards me and sprang backwards just in time. A cyclist had jumped the red light and almost knocked me down as he sped across the junction.”

    Of course, this never happens.

Be fair, you’re on your bike, you see Melanie Philips, just there in front of you, no body guards, walking out into the road, all vulnerable…

Could you honestly resist the urge to try and get her… could you? not sure I could…

You can buy big bags of 40 of them, but not sure I’ve ever seen just a pair fo the foam rings… could buy a big job lot and then sell the rest off in pairs on ebay for similarly effected souls, that’s what I did with formula o-rings. 😉

An hour and no-ones copme along to say the helmet made no difference blah blah? This is STW yes?

Anyhoo, glad you survived more or less. I think of helmets as a disposable head.

Can only possibly be Purity Ring for me, just amazing, especially after seeing them live this week.

Runners up include Alt-J, Four Tet and Django Django

I did, I hate casual racists, if you’re going to be racist the least you can do is wear a coat and tie.

I got flashed at 36 in Grenoside, very relieved to find they sent me a letter saying I was naughty boy and should go home and think about what I’d done (which I’d already done) and no more… phew…

Jamie’s sin was not unusual, my town and village have a mix of 30 and 20 zones and I’m very surprised there aren’t more accidents as its also a mix of blind narrow corners and the limits may as well not exist.

Any one know of any good Gin offers at the moment? export stregth for martinis, the making thereof.

S’s have bombay saphire at 17 a litre, but I’m not wildly fond of that.

S’s have Juras Origin and superstition at 22 each at present.

in Nidderdale it was -6 last night, so if you stay on the shady places, you’ll prbably be reet, but with so much run off water still coming out of the ground watch out for sheet ice, I had a few tight sbum hole moments yesterday…

as above, diffusion is matt, black is gloss, I’d go diffusion everytime, won’t show scuffs and scratches as much for a start.

Used to light them with a big sheet of newspaper held over the fireplace to create a serious updraft – tended to catch fire so you’d shove it under the grate with the poker.

You can get these made from metal, in our house called a Blow George but that could just be one of those funny names that no one knows what it came from, prop it agains the fire place with a poker…

depends where you are, in a rural area coal away almost certainly, another way would be go outside this evening and see if you can smell that lovely coal fire smell…

The other way is smokeless during the day and then coal at night when no-one can see which chimney its coming from, cos smokeless fuels are a bit shit…

Wood burning stoves while being very ‘STW’, are also ace, expensive to put in but staggeringly efficient.

Will, if you’re wanting a smooth film you ideally want 2 cables and a rig carrying the camera, someone I know has made such a thing, I’ll see if I can find his pictures tonight, but if youi search vimeo for singletraction you’ll find a couple of the vids, they come out very steady.

Thinking I might try this… All it would mean for me on a work day is skipping lunch, and being disciplined about tea (not eating cos I’m hungry in the time it takes me to head soup…)

I’ve hit a brick wall with conventional dieting as I’m now trying to loose weight I’ve had for over half my life. Can’t eat eggs though… Some form of ham based breakfast then I think… It supposed to be very protein filled breaky yes?

Wow… what a thread. FWIW the BBC and ITV are transmitting radio waves at you, and they put Loydd Webber in their’s. If that doesn’t shrivel your todger nothing will…

Most wireless routers scale down to lower bandwidth when not being used by the way… but that’s only so smaller band width can get in-between the molecules in your tin foil hat…

Oh and if you get muesli don’t eat the brazil nuts, that’s where they hide the thought controlling radiation…

Still mulling it over as an idea in the longer term… As I have combated my fear of food processo0rs, not to mention belt sanders, jigsaws and cordless drills (all have the potential for an episode of cauaslty), and i do like logs.

Saxons post is much where I started off coming from. Grew up in the country, many people have chainsaws, and don’t have an entire outfit of safety gear (not knocking it, just saying) or do courses. What I don’t have [now] is anyone knowledge I trust to give me good instruction/advice/demonstration, so a bit wary of going it alone etc (certainly without the full safety outfit).

@tootall, food processor, they scare the crap out me…

I try to waste as much time, and cost them as much as possible…

    “Do you have Sky”

“Have I got the sky? I don’t understand.”

“Do you have sky in your house”

“No I don’t have the sky in the house, the sky is outside, in the… well, in the sky.”

They hang up eventually but sometimes you can keep them going for ten minutes or so…

I have a very large but ridiculously soft Bernese Mountain dog called Jeff

You sir have just shot up my list of favourite forumites. Love bernese, had one when i was but a lad, but then went back to Maremmas when he died (i was four so don’t remember Bruno clearly). But proper sized dogs are just fantastic. You surely get the odd enthusiast just delighted to see a massive hound.

Anyway back on topic, I feel this will help raise the level of debate, not that I got 1 page in the sweepstake or anything.

To buy a full set of safety clothing (even if you shop around for deals) is going to cost you more than the even a modest quality saw.

Just came back after an internet tour of safety gear that told me exactly that. In my head it was boots (steal toed was me supposing I could find a pair of boots that would do trailbuilding/be ok for CS – seem unlikely after a bit of research) and gloves… Chaps etc evoked a first reaction “no that’s surely not… well I do LIKE my legs now I think about it”.

Am still interested but current plan makes not worth the money for now (prob won’t be in this garden for too much longer… (few years most)

Notice HSS provide safety gear and instruction w/ each hire, will keep an eye out for courses in the area, in an AONB so they do that sort of thing quiite often. Bow saw, axe and achey armes for a bit longer then I think… boooring. 😕

Thanks for the replies. I am very concious of the safety factor, steel toed boots are on the list anyway as I need some for other stuff. Looking into occasional use courses in the area.

Taking on board comments I’m thinking I can stick with bow saw for felling, and get a cheapo small one for logging. Electric vs. petrol. Less raw pure in electric I’m guessing. Worth bothering with?

While I fully see the need for massive H&S awareness. 800 poonds makes it not so cost effective just for garden taming and wood stocking.
