take off the top-cap and see how far your fork-steerer is from the top of the stem. my guess is that yoiur new stem is fractionally lower/ smaller than the old one. hence the top-cap is tightening on the fork before it clamps the stem.

Thanks for all the tips peeps. Don’t know what I was worried about…they went up a doddle.

Anyone reading this thread for the same reason, the only thing I’d add is to take your time cutting the tube down the middle if there’s no seam to follow.

    Cheers

OP where are you based? You’re gonn get different rates in different parts of the country. How big is the deck going to be? Height, steps, balusters, hard or soft-wood.

    Ps. Don’t forget membrane, end-grain sealer….Spax screws ( wirox, coated 15 year warranty ) £45 per 1000 approx. Cheaper screws available… What bearers & rafters etc. C24?

Many factors to a deck…one man’s deck won’t be as good as the next man’s..ask him how many he has built and look at photos…

Thanks, The easier first wasn’t a deal sealer for me as I don’t like to ( read can’t ( ex-smoker )) spin for too long as I always end up changing down and mashing…so might as well run a 34. I was looking to build up a bike for my son using parts he already has but he runs single-speed atm. If it was worthwhile I would have given him my 1×9 set-up and gone 1×10 myself. I might as well set his up 1×9 also..Any deals about??

    @ junkyard..I take it the 17.83 gear inches you mentioned are for a 2 x 9 set-up ( 22 32 rings ). I don’t have the lugs on my crank or Renthal chainring for a 2 x set-up. I’ve currently a 32 ring and a Sram pg990 with 11 34 ( I think ) cassette. I was thinking of changing to a 34 front and a whatever 36 rear. Do you know what my options are re. cassette?

I don’t suffer from wrist aches and pains. Its my fingers. I’ve thought about ergo. grips but am worried that if I set them up for a seated position they’ll be wrong when I’m descending/ standing. I’m using Oury grips which I find pretty good. I have wondered though whether a grip with more circumference ( I’ve fairly large hands but not long fingers ) would improve the numbness..

I know people use a carbon seat-post to reduce the harshness of a hardtail for instance, so was wondering whether its the same for bars…

@ I_ache..I seem to be in the same boat. I’ve Zocchi 55’s on mine. They were converted to coil last year by Windwave as the air-seal failed twice. They weigh more than the frame ( forks 2.7kg + ). I run them at 160mm and find they climb well enough and absolutely fly ( scarey fast ) downhill. I’d love to swap to a lighter fork say a Rev @ 1.7kg but would hate to lose the confidence that the forks give..If someone could guarantee that I could have a lighter fork with the same damping properties I’d change.

Maybe just get the forks set-up ( serviced ) right . I thought Pikes were supposed to be a good fork.

I ( OP ) have had mine (2.4 CM dual and Smith dual ) for 3 weeks now and loving them. Not a slop tyre or grass but for everything else I’m well pleased. Off to Wales for a week soon and they’re staying on, I’ll probably go tubeless by then. A confidence inspiring tyre.

I put these on a new to me Bfe frame and get an insane, hooliganistic ride. Be warned.

Bfe’s seem to go on EBay for around 180. I’ve had one for about 2 weeks..absolutely love it. Couldn’t find a Surge at the time so went for the Bfe.

Thanks mrben. What formula/ program did you use?

I lined up the riser today and clamped it into what I thought was the right position. When measuring I had 310mm and 370mm right.

Just goes to show that you can’t beat the squint of a tradesmans eye.. 🙂
