Im not too fussed with the whole sticker thing either i think it looks shit. Hopefully 2 opening side-windows like these[/url] and the whole sink/cooker/storage/ bed thing going on inside will convince them its used for camping.
As for the starting a project then deciding to buy a finished camper, I can imagine, depends on many factors..time, skill-level, budget, what hand-tools you have and vision. For me personally the lwb vivaros, traffics etc. are too small.

I’d be starting off with a base vehicle of 3.5t so I dont reckon I’d get it re-classified as under 3.05t.

@ surroundedbyhills..do you need a pull-test or seatbelts if you have it as a camprvan if people are sitting in the back?

Does modifying/ removing the bulkhead have any affect on insurance etc?

I see what you mean about the ‘removable’ fixtures. I was thinking that the ‘front half’ would either be two single or two double seats with a fixed table or even a couch/seat pull-out bed type configuration on the off-side behind the driver with a minimalist sink/ hob on the sliding-door side. Width-wise, a full 8×4 sheet fits between the wheel-arches so i could build a flat top across the top of the wheel arches 2.44m into the van allowing me to slide full sheets in from the rear if needed. Bike storage on/above this & two single beds that fold down from either side to make a double at the rear.

Its not the speed I’m interested in. It has to double as a work van..I say double but it’ll mainly be a work van carrying lengths of timber as well as full sheets of ply/ mdf etc. There will be fold away beds to allow full height storage when not in use.

@ Mbnut. I’ve a medium E29 also and currently have an offset bushing in but fitted as it’s intended but feel the bike needs to be slacker. Im also running a 30mm rise bar and not the 30 or 40 mm drop as per the article. I find the bike more manoeuvrable with a rear weight bias.
Does the clevis not cause any ptoblems with medium frame.? Mine’s a 2014 and came with the ctd shock..

What size frame is yours and did you get the Ohlins shock?

I suppose it makes sense that a + size tyred bike can afford to be aluminium because of the cushioning..

I think it’s been summed up in an earlier post that people see the cost and not the value…

Hang a door takes the same time to say as open a door..it sounds like a totally quick & simple process and gives no insight to the work involved..

@ 40mpg…I’m working but feel free to pm me. Where are you situated?

Going off at a tangent here but I also get the ” can you quote for a fence..something nice..oh yes exotic hardwood this hardwood that, concealed fixings? Yes please. Hardwood decking also please..yup laid at 45deg. Perimeter…stainless fixings etc. Etc. Then when you’ve spent two days on the quote and drawings etc..phonecall chasing availability of said hardwood..and you give a price you get “how much?”..can you quote me for fence panels and 3×3 posts instead.

Reading this is starting to make me feel better. Couldn’t get to sleep properly last night as I was so cross. It boils down to my MiL/ FiL thinking I’ve ripped them off by deliberately dragging the job out..believing someone who didn’t see the job over me who they’ve known for almost 30 years. It’s gonna be difficult to come back from this.

@geetee1972 I reckon we’d get on fine. Thursdays not good for me though as I need an early finish. Don’t know what I’m doing Friday yet..

& yes..Festool and Mafell tools here too.

I stay clear of new build ‘house-bashing’ as it doesn’t do ‘it’ for me. You’re just putting up with someone’s else’s rushed/ botched job.

The old screw holes were wood-filled and glued so as the new screws have something to bite into.

Sorry I mean the door stops which were approx. 35mmx 10mm although they could be called jambs..

Hinges were good quality 100mm brass @ £10 a pair. Handles pretty cheap quality ‘victorian brass’ trade price £18

I did the job a week ago for MiL/FiL. They haven’t paid in full and is now complaining. I got a phonecall this evening from FiL asking why he still owes some money as he has since spoken to a carpenter and he can fit a door in 2.5 hrs. Im fuming. I gave them a reduced labour rate and all the doors, furniture & jambs at trade. I sourced quality hinges from a supplier 10 miles away, doors and handles from howdens, jambs from Travis. Took me all-in two days. Everything routed and square, hinges and the mortice latch plate tight as…really did a pucker job. Had to clean out all the old paint out of the existing hinge recesses to get a good clean fit etc. I tried to explain everything that went into it and he wasn’t interested. So I told him to keep his money and the next time he wants doors, hinges etc at trade prices, all sourced and delivered for free, fitted at a reduced rate by someone who turns up with 4 grands worth of kit that he should call the guy that can do it all in 2.5hrs.

If the mortice idea isn’t your bag put in 6×4 posts and on the sides of the posts put a 3×1.5 ‘fillet’ and fix 3×2 or 4×2 between the posts and feather board from post to post..

I know the chassis are the same the question was more directed at the engines/ box etc..the insulation does seem about twice as thick as it needs to be. I hadn’t thought about the smell though.

All depends what your first projects are going to be be. If you’re going to be fitting skirting-board and hanging a door or two you’ll need different tools to the ones you’ll need for framing a roof where you could be using 6m 6×2 or 8×2’s. I’ve also built a Pergola using 12′ 9×9 posts and 22′ 9×3’s. The only tools that ive used for all were a tape, pencil, square, circular saw. Straight-edge spirit-levels.
