Nice vid, love riding on the coast near me but the salt water’s deadly.

Can we see the bits you edited out, like loosing your front wheel on the weed 😀

    Cheers all.

British Gas cover is £9 a month with a £99 exess if it needs work doing. If Im looking at £50ish for a service I will sack the B’Gas thing. Its only a year old, any parts required should be covered by warranty.

Thanks for that link. I wasn’t aware of that process, figured it was pretty much the same as the old mini’s. The front X2 is fine, just the rear that’s a pain.

I do de-gass the fluid, something I picked up from having Avids.

Yeah they are fine although Ive not gone tubeless on this yet. I’m quite impressed with the Ardent on the front.

I had to re-route all the cables, they were just chucked on from stock.

I have had mine now since around the begining of Jan. I tried it on in the shop but didnt quite like the feel of the cockpit, figured the bars had a tad too much back sweep for me. Anyway I bought it and changed the bars then it was fine. I also swapped the brakes and shifters.

This is the first off the shelf bike I have bought since around 2006, I’ve always built to my own spec but this bike is the mutts.

I’m 5ft 10 and went for the medium, I would say i am right on the point of going to a large but this fits me fine. i got it for a good price and it was the components on offer that persuaded me.

I put a 2.2 Mountain king on the back and that is close on the driveside chainstay.

    Some pics.

I’ve had no experience with the tyres you have listed above but I wouldn’t bother with anything mud specific for Betws. Where do you plan on riding? The Marin?

My Whyte 29er came with a Maxxis Ardent on the front, I was going to change it but after a couple of rides Im leaving it on. Up to now its probably the best tyre I’ve ridden.

I found a NINER RIP 9 frame at chevin, went over from North Wales to get it and haggle a deal. Top bunch in there, couldn’t fault them!

The wife of a mate of mine went into kwik fit to get the brakes done on the car, when she went back to pick it up she was hit with a massive bill, they took upon themselves to renew all the shocks.

They did it without her permission and she told them she wasnt paying and to put the old ones back on, they told her they had gone in the bin.

The bin had been emptied and the old shocks gone. She kicked off big time. The end result was new shocks for nothing!

I’ve heard too many horror stories to even consider going there.

    I fly helis.

They sell for about £80, not sure how much you would get for it, could be more hassle than its worth selling it.

Yaers ago when I was a kid my old man worked in a local quarry on drilling rigs and blowing shit up.

10 years ago he died of cancer and I tried to get hold of a scale model of the sort of rig he used so I could mount it in his memory. I trawled high and low for years and then I found one on ebay.

    This one

I got messaging the guy that was selling it and it turns out that this fella knew my old man well, worked with him in the quarry, my dad taught him to drill. He aslo worked with him all over the world including the Falkland Islands and Africa. The seller scratch built the model while he was out in the Falklands.

Because of this mental coincidence he drove from South to North Wales to give it to me personally. We chatted about my old man and he broke down in tears, told me some ‘what happens on tour stays on tour’ stories too!

It’s the only thing I have to remind me of him so Im glad I found it

Could be dodgy ground buying bike stuff, if he had a shop he’s probably got all he needs.

    Cuff links?

And you are right with regards to pre-race bike check but if you were to take your bike to a bike shop for work with a view of riding at the weekend would you really re-check your bike before you rode?

Schoolboy error that, Always check your bike over, I have had some pretty shoddy repairs done by LBS’s that I have had to put right. Thats why I now do all my own maint.

Putting that aside, thats pretty bad service!

Yeah, tubeless on the wtb’s! The ikon was a pain to mount, but it went up eventually! Been fine since. I am tempted with some hope/stans arch ex, but will have to wait for now.. I was tempted to get a 2.4 ardent for the front and stick the 2.25 ardent on the back!

I will change the wheels in time but not for a while yet. I will probably go for the Flow rims, found the Arch a little flexy.

Did you have to add any rimtape to the WTB’s or are they just throw the valve in and pump up?

Im impressed with the Ardent up front but like you say, the ikon is crap. I got a cheap mountain King for the rear for now but for I will be changing for a set of Maxxis Ignitors next, they are tried and tested tyres for me and I know they work.

Did you go tubeless on the stock rims?

I have always ridden 3×10, the Whyte is 2×10 so is taking some getting used to. Changed the back tyre and it really does handle well.

It’s funny because you know everyone in here would be annoyed in that situation, just not openly complaining in fear of ruining their cool careless image.

I have been using Adidas evil eyes now for quite a while, never had an issue with them steaming up, brilliant but expensive.
