Cheapest and most efficient are different strategies.

I probably did the cheapest method when I was prototyping my battery holders a couple of years ago, pattern in card-backed foam, and then a silicon mould.

This produced a passable trial part, but it wasn’t very pretty!

3D printing quality is fantastic, and the new pattern produced great results.

Depends what resources you have available freely, and of course the type of part you are designing.

Agree with the above, which bank you use is irrelevant, you should have funds available on the 28th or the last working day preceding that if the 28th is a holiday.

    Always stop, even when commuting.

I think my best one was when I was on the A27 dual carriageway near Brighton and a guy was pushing an old motorbike up a hill. I was in the work van and had transported my motorbike the previous day, so still had a plank for loading and tie-downs. I stopped, the guy had run out of petrol, and it was about 5 miles to the nearest petrol station, he was pretty pleased

Not necessarily 100% relevant, but you may like to have a look at Boxee as a front-end. I have it running on an old Macbook and it’s great.

Only a playback device, no recording, but works really nicely. Yet to find a format which it won’t handle, unlike my old media box which wouldn’t handle lots of things.

One thing I like about it on the mac is using the tiny little remote, which is very simple.

What sort of remote controls do people use with their Mythboxes?

I had to streak into the work kitchen once to steal a tea-towel after getting out of the shower and discovering I had no towel :o

Have done the commando and sockless thing several times through lack of planning too!

We had an office cleaner in Serbia who smelled so bad we needed to open all of the windows whenever she came into a room. None of the staff would say anything to her, so it came down to me. Floods of tears, tales of woe etc.

From then on the stench of horrible perfume was more overpowering, but probably slightly less offensive.

Pockets for me, mainly because I don’t have a saddle bag. 2 phones, some cash, pump, tube, multi-tool, levers and a couple of cereal bars fit fine.

The problem with Red Setters is that their heads are too narrow to actually fit a brain – hence why they are all as daft as a brush :)

The Ay-Up systems use li-po cells in hard cases for protection, and I’ve not heard of anyone having problems with them.

However, when I was looking at a battery system, although li-po did seem the cheapest and most powerful option, the numerous horror stories of packs catching fire/exploding during charging or being damaged meant that I went the 18650 li-ion route instead.

You need a chutney ferret. They have sharp teeth and will easily remove any residue.

Not to be confused with a Turboferret :D

I think I’m going to have the same issue, pretty certain I ordered the set with the 75/130cm hoses, don’t remember seeing 2 different options when I placed my order.

Swapping the hoses and buying one new sounds like the cheapest option.

bigjim, I’m afraid I’m not in the country at the moment, India to be precise, the plan is to be here until June.

Battery holders were an interesting side project for a year, but I don’t really have the time to devote to it any more. If you do a search on MTBR.com there is a guy who has copied my idea and is selling a range of pretty decent looking holders. Interestingly, he was one of the people who said that I’d never manage in my original MTBR thread

Oh, according to UPS, no-one was in to sign for my brakes today, hopefully they’ll have more luck on Monday.

I placed my order on the 6th October, the next I heard was a confirmation of shipment on 12th October, and UPS are delivering today, according to the online tracking.

If you really must expand the valve hole, I would suggest using a tapered hand ream and not a drill.

The only problem I’ve ever encountered with Presta valves is with careless removal of the pump, in the process tearing out the valve.

Apart from that, I can’t see what’s not to like?

Thanks for the heads up, mate of mine swears by The Ones, best brakes he’s ever used, and he got his cheap but still more expensive than this offer.

Just ordered a set of The Ones for the DH bike :)

The HD also has a rechargeable Li-ion battery which saves using loads of AAA batteries.

I managed pretty decent results using a silicon mould and fast setting polyurethane resin for my battery holders.

Production items used a rapid-prototyped pattern, but initial tests were with a simple wood/cardboard pattern.

I must admit that has very much been on the back burner, lots of higher priorities at the moment, work being the main one I’m afraid.

I did take a mini lever apart to measure all of the internals recently, but haven’t got round to incorporating the correct dimensions into my SolidWorks model.

Most likely will remain a pipe dream :(

Last was a nice beer glass from a pub.

Most impressive was probably a 4′ tall porcelain tiger from outside a restaurant in South Kensington. Wasn’t alone I hasten to add, and it was returned a few days later :)

Working on a Dell M90 here with a memory upgrade and it does the job pretty well for AutoCAD and SolidWorks, been using it for nearly 4 years now, should be able to pick up a refurbished/2nd hand one pretty cheap I would expect.

First was the Ratz Broomstick Bash in 1999 I think, 2nd in Novice, was quite pleased with myself :)

Had a similar experience to Sharki at Cheddar a few years later with consuming large amounts of alcohol on the Friday, playing catch-up with some friends who had been there for hours, and not stuck in traffic on the M4/5 :(

Jousting with tent poles after the bar shut was most amusing, and it’s remarkable that no-one was seriously injured 8O

    Didn’t have a sleep mid-race though :D

I have an NC10 for skype and tinterweb browsing, bought 2nd hand last year for about 200 notes, and can’t fault it. Obviously not the fastest thing in the world, but upped the ram to 2GB and it runs everything I want including occasional HD video editing.

Bit of a weight penalty for the extra puncture resistant layer, but certainly worth it.

I bought a carbon ELO very cheap off here as I’ve fancied one for years just to be different. Light and stiff, but does like to drip oil on the floor :?

It is certainly a talking point here in India where they aren’t exactly common!

I relieved my friend of his 95 E36 328i tourer for £200 when he was moving house and couldn't be bothered advertising it.

Has been totally reliable, done over 190k miles now, have fitted some new suspension bushes last year before the MOT and this year it needed a new bit of brake pipe.

Can't really fault it, even if I'd paid 7 times the price. Not the best on fuel, but it is one of the biggest engines, so to be expected, having said that 30mpg driving relatively carefully isn't bad.

I'd say whip out the HD from the laptop, and stick it in either this or this, depending on whether your HD is IDE or SATA.

I think I was fortunate enough for my loan never to be mixed up with my pay or HMRC. Direct debit straight to the SLC, annual statements, and they stopped automatically exactly when I had predicted.

Having read a few horror stories similar to the above, it was a very pleasant surprise :)

Sounds like bypassing HMRC is the way forward.

I had a quote of around £150 from Shand Cycles for a belt and sprockets, so a bit cheaper than getting direct from Germany.

Might be worth giving Steven a shout if anyone is interested.

I've got an 18" life running a 100mm lefty. I'm 5'10", and have about 24cm of seatpost exposed. Not a huge amount of stand-over I must admit, but the bike feels right for me. I'd have more seatpost out than I'd feel comfortable with if I were on a 16" I'd think.

I'm probably slightly longer of leg and shorter of body than typical, but not a freak :)
