Dave, yeah I was looking at ss and pp ones, Not too sure about either as the pp shan has this open head tube badge and I was concerned about corrosion into btm bearing from water ingress.

Have you considered Formula Megas. I picked up a set and they have been excellent. Good progressive feel mated to 203mm discs. They are a good price 2nd hand too.

Air Pikes work really well. I’m similar build to you. I have a set of Air Sektors on my BFE at present and they just feel a little wobbly by comparison. I had a set of 55 rc3ti which were awesome on downhill sections but made climbing tough for me.

Production privee Shan is 420mm steel slack 65-66deg but pricey at £550
    . Dialled and Cotic similar I think c 420-425mm
Saving up for Shan for next production dates jun 2013.

I ran the zee mech 32-36 with 11-36 rear cassette and a variety of front rings. The zee is not designed to work with double or triple, it can work, as I have used it but as Joel says it won’t work well in every gear combo.

Nick, I’m on my third bfe, don’t ask! I have just fitted a sektor rl air and I really like it. I changed from a 160 travel fork and this feels better, it has a 70mm stem and a 5mm spacer under bars with a 30mm rise.
So far I have tried a 50mm with flat bars on 160 fork not great at climbing. 70mm and it’s better, slight riser bar improved further and now the 150 seems better still. Also running tubeless which has improved the feel I get from steering.
If you can , experiment with your set up and try not to heed all advice about fork lengths on here. Pikes are an excellent solution in my opinion (good value 2nd hand) but the sektors cost me £240 new from Germany, delivered in 3 days.

The Zee setup is designed for 1 x10 specifically, I have used it with this and tried 2 x10 on a hard tail. So far the 2 x 10 does not work so well, suggestions welcome from anyone who has used it successfully.

Very good so far, ordered several things from them and stock is in and dispatched quickly.Pricing is comparable with other on line retailers and queries via email are answered quickly.

Website has improved recently, stock quantity etc.

Their old DT website was poor. On the car parts side the knowledgable staff, Dave Kimberley in particular, are an asset. They do compete in a variety of motorsport, racing, historics, sprints etc and offer a number of good deals to competitors.

These online retailers all offer massive number of lines and many rely on manufacturers descriptions on websites.Stock levels and controls from distributors appear equally hit and miss so items can go oos sameday as something is ordered.

Surely if you need some advice would you not be better to find a good LBS who may have better knowledge, somebody like North West Mountain Bikes are amazing, yes you sometimes pay a little more but they do offer decent kit and sound advice.

North wind, I was planning to add a little more liquid and try again this weekend. They go up and stay inflated for 12-14 hours (overnight) typically, when I return to them they are very soft. The stans fluid can be seen coming thru pinprick holes in the sidewalls. I managed half distance around the red at Gisburn before I had to stop and as they were coming off the rim on the back wheel.By contrast the contis go up and stay up beautifully never needing any attention after the initial fitting.

Had a set for just over a week , so far mixed views, after using Conti’s Mountain King 2 UST on my 823 rims I was expecting a simple changeover. Mounted fine but will they go up and stay up! They seem very porous I have added about 85ml of Stans sealant so far and have had to give up on the rear altogether going back to a tube with the tyre. On Gisburn they are great roll fast and grip well.
Used a compressor to inflate by the way…
    Great price from Freeborn too.
    Good luck

I’ve opted for one from my original post. I need a 15 or 20mm axle for my existing wheel sets and I have not found anything cheaper of similar spec so far.

Agree with comments about blue and red , we rode last month with some friends. It’ just felt like an endless slog to get round the red. A few nice flows of singletrack and a descent towards the end but nothing to write home about. I guess visitors use the other Stanes nearby. We all loved Dalbeattie as a contrast to Ae.
