I always fancied doing a triathalon and then started training in 2008 and then got married and couldnt find the time. Then this year bought a mtb and entered the Craggy island Triathalon ,550m open water swim,18k off road ride and 8k over mountain run!It was fantastic ,hard work and i loved it i didnt even mind coming last as it was such fun and so friendly. The winner finished his whole race before i started my run but he was bloody quick ,do a small sprint one ,im doing one again next year

Ok ,so i am a chef and my ovens and stoves get greased up and whatnot ,so every night the junior chefs and kps bring it all back to silver ,so i was thinking oven cleaner (sodium hydroxide)works on steel -my rotors are steel- bingo, brushed some on wearing good latex(2 pairs)left 1 min, then washed off, using water from the boiler then sanded carefully using wet and dry. Same for pads but between washing and sanding gave 30 seconds of blow torch ,then rode home less than a mile and both wheels lock up(its wet) managed some lovely endo’s as well JOB DONE .

Ah Chainsuck! It all makes sense now,the bit where the chainstay meets the BB is a bit mangled from the chain getting in there ,it happens a lot on up shifts?what causes it?is it my clumsy shifting?or is it just a fact of life ,also is it the bent middle ring that is making it happen every ride?one last thing ,I guess its not doing my frame any good? am i right !

Well done Weeksy,You did a sterling job,Crosshairs was on fire,he really can move ,i bailed at checkpoint 1 ,i really was not fit enough so i quit while i was still sane as i reckon i would of cracked .I remember coming down a nice decsent and a sheep just lay there and i shouted “move are you crazy”? then realised actually the sheep lives here on the hill in the dark, and its me thats crazy, on the hill at night in the dark,I reckon it is a really well organised event thought ,and if your really really fit and a bit bonkers is a must ,congrats to all the finishers .

Im doing this for the first time ,so ive packed a lot ,the weather will dictate what i leave in the car. or not?.Im taking sandwiches ,gels, bars treats ect ,camelbak and water bottle ,normal pack stuff like, tubes ,tools ect, waterproofs and a bivvy bag if it all gets too much and i need some kip, Head torch and a bar light off Smudge. Also first aid kit, whistle ,map ,compass and a change of socks for a morale boost half way oh and my gloves are going to be water/windproof winter ones instead of my normal mitts ,have i over done it or is it better to be safe ? Any body gonna be taking it easy and want a riding buddy im on a Cannondale trail sl4 in White and am riding alone?

Im doing the SDW this Saturday, thanks for the write up ,made me laugh about the 5 cables ,i’ve only got 4 so i’ll wonder why im not as well endowed.I am doing the ride at night so i reckon i’ll go mental contemplating what i could be doing in 4c cold at 1am, rather than cycling up and up and up and then getting arm pump from the brakes as ill be too scared to go fast on the decents.

Sherwood has some fantastic bits, one section has amazing berms and it needs to really be hammered.I was at Thetford last week and rode both reds.Your lucky to have such a fantastic bike shop on site at Thetford, make sure you call in the shop in Sherwood they are such nice chaps,i reckon after thetford you will love a bit of gradient,do the Kitchener twice that will hurt at speed .

I just got back from the Craggy Island Triathalon . I trained for the swim by swimming double the swim distance once a week for 6 weeks and came out the swim 135th out of 185 entrants ,i made up 6 places on the cycle and then lost it all on the run as i didnt train once ,there are plenty of training schedules online so train train train i finished last but plenty didnt finish so at least i hold my head high ? it was a lot of fun just enjoy it

LBS today bled my brakes and as the mechanic was off the owner did it ,loads of sponge in there, its like a brake cake, any way they helped me out as ive got a trip to Scotland leaving tomorrow ,so even though they busy today they got me done by doing it into closing time ,also bought some disk pads bought 3 pairs and owner rounded the price up by 5p a set to £15.00 now thats a service even told me the names of the staff , so i reckon if i let him over charge me again ill get some stickers or a coffee its taking time but im glad i let the attitude and bad service continue as we are making real progress.seriously though they always tackle other things for free whilst its there today they replaced a couple of rounded off bolts and the fact i rocked up with a broken bike leaving for a trip next day means that because they sorted me out they will still get my custom .

Collected bike this morning ,brakes have been bled and feel almost like new .Pads are down to half on brakes and BB has been serviced it was full of dirt and needs replacing next service (i can live with that ).We had a chat about use and as i hadnt specified the amount i would use and the LBS thought it would be good for me ,i still love the bike and if something breaks ill upgrade to better spec .Im not Trolling ,i was just stunned by the man in the shop saying ive wrecked a new bike ,Head set cant of been loose more than a week as i would notice it as i do a pre ride check of the bike .LBS said over 12 months wear in 6 months ,bottom line we are still friends and ill take it back for next service . I think when i went in the shop i was 115k and he thought “canal paths and river banks ” once or twice then into the shed to get rusty/dusty, when i went in this morning and had a cuppa with him and told him about Epic all nighters and Triathalons he pissed him self . OP was about a mountain bike should handle a mountain ,turns out a bit of extra tlc will keep it running .Oh he told me no jet washing (the trail center has one so i use it gonna stop now as ive been bollocked and taught a new way ,
