Inbred 29er, or am I being too cheap?

Sorry, blatant reply to self, to push the post back on to the front page. Might have been a bit too early posting it this morning. That, or it’s just a very tedious subject that only I care about :-)

I’m thinking if I board up to the shed door threshold, I’ll plane off the doors and that should remove any gap.

No, I don’t think you’re unlucky. I sent mine back for a service and it now loses all its air. From day one it’s been a right old faff to keep maintained. I’ve never been able to run the cable remote well enough for it to function properly and it always drops a couple of cms when I sit on it. To remedy this I have to drop it slightly and return it very slowly to get a fully pumped post.

LBS mentioned their distributor is pretty shoddy to deal with too.

Currently building an Inbred 29er and would really like to try their Slide fork, but this post has made me question whether they can play well enough with the big RS or F.

Those Satoris on eBay are all £187, or am I missing something?

Sorry everyone, I should have searched for this before posting.

I’ve just bought a 29 Inbred frame and plan to sell my full bouncer and road bike and just have the Inbred for everything. Got fed up with maintaining two bikes, getting bored on the road and bashing out the miles just to stay fit enough to keep up with my mates off road. Work and other commitments means I feel like just winding the mileage dial back a bit. Will see how it goes and am looking forward to the “freedom” of riding where I want, when I want, for how long I feel like. This is my idea of a compromise rather than throwing the baby completely out.

Like someone earlier said, much harder to get back into something if you’ve dropped it completely. I’m vowing not to be a Strava slave from here on in!

    # 706. This will be my fifth. Last year I broke my collarbone on the Weds night before it, and I was probably at my fittest ever. This year I’m determined to make up for it.

I’m off to demo the latest in HT trail-friendly 29″ mode I think.

Smashed right collarbone and couple of ribs 1st May (right before Dyfi and our only beautiful summer in memory). But two weeks later got on the turbo then road after further two weeks. PITA at the time but I soon got through it. Only long term issue is confidence building off-road – only just regaining my trail skills.

Re-sprayed my 09 Dawg for £80 and it looks (and still rides) like new.

I’ve done four previous Dyfis and this year I’d been training hard to aim for a top-10% finish place (I know, it’s meant to be chilled out etc, but the route cries out to be ridden in anger). Two friends broke their collar bones this year and I was counting my blessings right up to four days before the event. Then, of course, it happened to me. Next year seems a long, long, long way away.

Good events, but appalling organisation and time keeping. Me and a friend have both been let down by poor timing at separate RK events.

Pinnacle Dolomite looks great value and the new orange one looks lovely.

Dolan bikes are good value too.

Going through a bottle of homebrew cider, it gets better every week that goes by, it’s not vintage though :-)

Cheers, tell me about it. It’s a good post with few moving parts to go wrong but like you say, it needs fine-tuning. What psi do you find works best? Also, it doesn’t help with shock pumps not being accurate below 100psi, both their dial readings and the stroke is tricky to judge at low pressures.

I’ve used the X Fusion HiLo for almost a year and my only criticism is the remote lever – it’s bloody hard to press. I’m thinking of swapping it over for a better design from another manufacturer, has anyone done this?

Buy one with ceramic bearings (or after-fit some) and they will last for years. Hope ceramic 5 years and counting so far…

There are three or four enduro-style descents which are optional, bit Dyfi-like if you know what I mean. But on the whole, as somafunk says. It’s got a great, chilled out atmosphere all weekend (best experienced if you can stay over and get pissed in the Neuadd Arms after the event).

Any news on the results yet?

Ha, loving the other stories of inner turmoil here, the 60km was certainly an event that required big balls. My mate summed it up at the end: “let’s give each other £25 next year and we’ll ride The Beast so we can do the best bits of CyB.” The route was just odd – lots of hike-a-bike sections and truly sadistically placed climbs. Couldn’t see the point of much of it. It doesn’t touch the Dyfi for all-round perfectness, but glad I did it. Won’t be back next year. When are the results/photos out?

Ok, I’m slowly getting my head around this. If I drag the library.itl and .xml files out of my iTunes folder, it opens up an empty iTunes. I then click Add folder to library and point it to the folder with all my media files (songs) in. This imports all my songs into iTunes and I can play them with no problems.

But, I have the default iTunes playlists only. How do I import my original playlists? I have them backed up in an external hard drive but if I drag them (the library.itl and .xml files) from there into my iTunes folder, it doesn’t allow me to play the songs, and I go back to the same problem I posted about.

Ok, that’s now duplicating every song in itunes!

Cheers. I’ve put 70psi in it and I’ve also filled the damper leg with oil and will leave it overnight. Neither air or oil are leaking so far.

Thanks, I’m having a senior moment, but what makes the spring stiffer when the lowers are fitted? If the air’s in, the rod’s the only moving part isn’t it?

I bought a 2009 Dawg Deluxe (6″) frame cheap off CRC earlier this year. I transferred my Stan’s Flows, Sektor, super-wide bars, dropper post and it’s 30lbs. It’s advanced my riding skills no end. The angles just seem to work perfectly and I don’t notice the bob. If I do, I flick propedal on. Great bikes (for those that aren’t ashamed to love the larger ladies).

Thanks I’ll remove the lowers and see which of the two rods is preventing full compression. I have only ever removed the lowers, changed dust seals and put the small amount of oil back into the lowers – I’ve never done anything more sophisticated with them than that. Can the seal head seal be replaced easily / DIY job? Also where’s the damper chamber to check the oil level? Thanks.

Avids get a lot of bad press for unreliability. In my experience, the main problem with them is their plastic pistons. The constant exposure a rear MTB brake has in the UK to shit, probably isn’t ideal for plastic pistons to cope with and remain free-moving in the caliper body (as ever, US-designed components not up to the job in UK weather).

I bought a piston replacement kit and since fitting it, this problem has gone away. It’ll probably come back again in 12 months’ or so, but by then I hope I’ll have sacked them off for some of the new, well-rated Shimanos.

What I haven’t fixed yet is the constant vibration from the rear brake under mild modulation. My latest theory is that bedding in new pads is putting too smooth a surface on the pads, so I’m trying out fresh organic pads without bedding them in. If that fails, I’ll try baking the pads.

Avids work great when they’re working great but nowadays they’ve got to really step up to compete with the boat-load of very good alternatives.

I transfer £150 per month to a savings account for spending on whatever I want – but that’s it. The rest stays in our current account to pay for living. I also love the challenge to seek out good bike gear at bargain prices. Three-year old clearance bikes/frames, buying the cheapest groupset components with the best trickle-down tech, using direct sellers like Superstar, clothes off ebay etc. The only things I don’t scrimp on are tyres, wheels and bearings.
