agree with dj right up to the recommendation bit.

    i’d go 53/39 or 52/38 with an 11-28 (11spd so less gaps?)

    then you’re all set.

39/28 on a light bike will get up pretty much anything of any steepness or length.

    hard to say.

if it was my dog he would then associate bikes with getting a lovely fuss. and go hunt out the next one he sees…

but if it was a timid/aggressive dog you may well associate bikes with being a nice thing, and he might leave them alone in future.

very hard to generalise. despite fitting under the general ‘dogs’ umbrella, behaviour is massively dependent on breeding and upbringing.

    not a clue sorry.

mine legs it after stuff the second he sees it. then gets there and licks the item in question till i catch up.

    Pedal circles not squares please.

    or stop pedaling before 50mph?

who pedals at 50+? that’s tucking speed!

    triples are great for touring.

you can get an anti-chew thing that you can run ahead and spray on children so when the dog bites them it doesn’t taste so good and they let go.

    solved.

this. however if the local costa run out of supplies then there will be unrest…

indeed. i still remember being in london for work one year when it snowed for a day.

they shut the tube and everything! AAAAATRRRRRGGGGHHHHH SNOOOWWWWWWW!

but the triple front mechs have a deeper cage and cover 22T or more, so….

    in two steps…

i dont think they could do that range in one go… or if they could the shift would be AWFUL.

also riding up to a hill in 53, then flicking to 34 ring would be like throwing an anchor out, or hitting neutral!

aside from some remote scottishists in this thread i’m pretty sure a sensible person could do 0 prep and survive.

its only snow. we live in a desperately over populated bit of land. you aren’t ever that far from help.

that 0.7 mph could make all the difference.

I’m not a fan of dogs. I can’t see the point of them.

    ah. irony.

    What did I do wrong?

assumed it was a generic problem that other dog owners could answer, rather than realising you have just had a brush with the general public, and sadly that’s just what they are like.

    doubt there’s much in 52/11 vs 53/11…

especially as you’ll be doing 50mph and sticking your head out the wind a touch more will make all the difference.

must say that’s a punt though, i havent had the benefit of worrying about trying differing top end ratios!

I like to pedal descents and anything over 48mph spins out

this might be the thing. round peaks etc. its hard to find a hill smooth enough to pedal down, and in flat races there aint any hills!

is front mech able to shift 53/38? whats the max tooth gap? – that said if you are going for a 28 anyway then 39/28 is pretty low…

    tracknicko

been riding around the peaks for the last 3 years. and racing around flatter short circuit stuff for last 18 months.

can’t say i use gears anywhere near 53:11 all that often. do you have lots of smooth downhillish bits?

    or really strong legs?

53:11 is quite standard see? its not like the pros run anything bigger…

    spin out my 53/39

you spin out 53/11 on most rides?

    tracknicko

    11-28s are gappy as shit.

fine if you live somewhere hilly, but as soon as you go somewhere flat and ride into headwinds for a bit you’ll instantly start finding ‘missing’ gears.

    or at least i did.

    grrrr.

i say if you’re managing on 39/25 then go for the 52/38 and keep the 11-25 out back.

EDIT: baws i’m talking 10spd and you’re talking 11. i still reckon 11-28 would be gappy, but haven’t looked at the ratios.

How on earth is a headtube “too short”? Oh no, I can’t get my bars high enough, if only there were some way to raise them.

frame requires a clumsy and ugly solution to get bars to ‘normal’ height.

should imagine there’s a (probably imperceptible) stiffness loss as a result also.

looks it’s not a fundamental point, just a bit of an ugly feature that shows a lack of thought (imo etc.)

Did this on Christmas morning, oh the joys. Its not impossible, just a right bloody faff getting the cover out of the way.

the mrs’ battery tray is cracked/snapped on that corner. leaving a jagged edge.

last time i did it my hand looked like i’d be punching a porcupine.

    grrrr!!!

Is an importer likely to hand out “shagged” bikes as demonstrators? I’d have thought they’d be better looked after than most 2nd hand bikes.

    this.

cheaper to machine frame from billet than weld or braze some tubes together?

    are you for real?

    both of cookeaa’s posts +1

As clever as the Empire seems it achieves none of the benefits that the San-Andreas did at the time and costs even more…

yeh but it looks the same 😉

    a lazy comparison perhaps.

using a process with a 41:1 waste ratio is a staggeringly bad idea when well-used alternatives are available…

    because it’s wasteful.

    tracknicko

Every day’s a school day, eh?

yeh but the point isn’t that recycling is more efficient than mining. its that using a process with a 41:1 waste ratio is a staggeringly bad idea when well-used alternatives are available…

I would bet good money that given the numbers this frame is likely to be produced in, it could forged in a furnace fuelled with narwhal ivory and pumped with a bellows made with panda skin and it would still have less overall environmental impact than a minor change to the packaging used in milk cartons.

    tangential!

    my point is…

it isn’t recycled into billet. or if it is…
that recycling process is MASSIVELY energy intensive.

re-using waste metal from CNC does not make it efficient

nobody speaks like Guy Martin locally

    finally!

been waiting for someone to agree with me for AAAAGES.

i (my parents) live about 3 mi from kirmington. i went out with a girl there for about a year…

after 29 years i can confirm that NOBODY… NOBODY… NOBODY.. round here sounds like that. not a single person.

last time i suggested that i got shot down!

Erm, the excess metal from CNC machining isn’t wasted, it’s recycled. Do carry on with this silly spiteful thread though.

why is discussing a product silly and spiteful? it’s ok to have an opinion…

    also:

    it’s recycled

using what process? and what is it recycled into?

So Hope producing things by CNC is fine but it’s not ok for a bike itself.

    er… yes.

passing opinions off as facts, thanks

    when?

and why does opinion/fact on engineering technique relate to number of bikes sold?
