    Short cage details =

    maximal pinion size: 28/34 teeth
    · total capacity*²: 17/23 teeth

    Whatever this means!

    gsuperstar…

is yours a 22/36 combo upfront? Assume there were no issues setting it up?

I’m ideally looking for a shortcage, so if I can get away with it then great.

thanks…its not cross threaded as it goes in a few turns by hand so assuming its the correct sized BB its looking like another trip to the LBS.

I’d decided that this would be my first ‘home full build’…bottled out of putting in the Headset with a block of wood and a hammer (probably wisely) but fairly depressing I can’t even get the BB in. I’m clearly the worlds most inept home mechanic, at this rate I’ll probably be going back to get the pedals fitted :-(

    thanks folks.

My expectations are very low, I’m certainly not doing it to win, but having biked when younger I always regretted never having entered a race (well I did enter the Malvern Hills classic bt couldn’t make the trip down) so its a itch needing scratched. Basically I’m looking to challenge myself a bit, but my concern is that ‘especially if I enter a solo race, I’m going to roll in miles behind the field to find the medals already awarded and the marshalls packing up the course.

I might get on that strava thing to find out exactly how slow I am!

I changed my SLX set up from triple to double via the limiter screws on the front mech. Worked fine. I’m assuming this isn’t the way its meant to be done, but couldn’t affort to spend even more on new kit.

    I think you’ll find it’s a little more complicated than that…

Yes I am well aware of this…I work as a resourcing manager so its my job to know. I posted my article to show that sweeping comments like the one made by boltonjon aren’t accurate, and the second paragraph of your article further proves my point…

and of course to start an argument as I’m bored….;-)

as for bike mechanic costs…25 quid an hr to the LBS where I work. And I need to book it in a week in advance due to capacity. Someones doing ok out of it…although I suspect its not the mechanics…

    A bit off topic but…

I really take my hat of to nurses & teachers who work silly hours with incredible responsibility for very little pay

The stark differences in wages between the private and public sector is crazy

Really, is that a fact or something you’ve just come up with because you heard it in the pub…because its not what the office of national statistics says

    http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/news/article-2065569/Average-public-sector-salary-3-800-year-time-average-private-sector.html

anyway..now I’ll sit back and watch the argument ensue ;-)

I’ve just gone from 150s to 160 55s and a 1 degree offset headset on my heckler.

Can’t wait to try it out in the alps…

although its a bit of a dog on the climbs at my local trail centre if truth be told…

The seat clamp size exists? Why isn’t it the same?

Can’t say I feel particular loyalty to any specific bike shop & I’ll happily go online. That said I will buy from them if the product is in, its reasonably priced (ie not more thatn 10% more), I want to try it on first, or I have a specific question about what I’m buying and need advice. If not I’d go elsewhere.

I must say I struggle to understand this bond between biker and LBS. maybe I’ve not been around long enough or maybe I’m to skint to be frivulous with my pennies and always look for a bargain. One thing I would say is that I’ve spent over 3k in my LBS over the last 12 months (2 bikes, various clothers components etc) and can’t say I feel particularly more valued than the bloke standing next to me looking to replace the breakpads on his Muddyfox for the first time in 20 years. Certainly never been offered a discount…or even a cup of tea for that matter…

Not complaining about that either, but certainly don’t see why I should show loyalty to them at the expense of my wallet..

I’m actially pretty impressed that the guy who runs the company takes time out on a sunday morning to respond! As mentioned earlier, it might not be a perfect operation but as I’m only paying 99 quid for a frame I’m more than prepared to cut them some slack…

despite my issues with the pricing on the website, I ordered a 456 for 99 quid on wednesday night and it arrived Friday morning. I’m perhaps thinking I should have got a smaller size, as the top tube is massive, but that my fault for not reading the sizing. Overall brilliant delivery time (they even sent a mail to tell me the time to be in ) and from initial impressions a quality ‘budget’ product. Can’t complain about a 99 quid frame that arrives 1 day after ordering..

    Will use again..

Ivan, to be fair I thought the same. Spotted a cheap as chips 456 frame on there last week but all sold out, and a ‘click to be notified of stock’. Thought that’ll never be coming back in, low and behold it did tonight and I’ve just bought it.

It may well be made of gaspipe, but for 100 quid its still an absolute bargain.

amazingly, if you offer a limited number of things at discounted prices and email lots of people, they sell out fast. Sorry.

Fair point! I guess I was more having a moan that the website maybe needs updating. But then again, just revisited and my 456 frame is back in stock at budget price. So with that in mind, I’ll apologise and get my credit card out….

Aren’t they part of the shifter window? They are on SLX. ie remove window, and unclick from underside…

my issue is nothing is ever in stock…! I was looking for a cheap hardtail frame and spotted the 456 on sale for 99 quid…lots of colours and sizes to choose from apparently..but all sold out. Strangely the exact same model in slightly different colour/size combinations was in stock…and full/double the price.

I’ve just looked at the oil volume table I posted above…I’ve misread it thinking mine are in row 11….I assume I should be row 13 :-( Are you able to confirm please?

Assuming the stantions are still ok, what other damage have I done to them???

I am an idiot….many thanks for helping out!

Model is Fox F100 RL-11. 20ml of 10 watt in each leg as per the instructions http://service.foxracingshox.com/consumers/Content/Service/oil_volumes.htm

Oil levels topped up 2 weeks ago, unless I’m doing it horribly wrong

oh..first tyre was a specialized sworks with no more than 15 miles on it…i’ve subsequently been told they are made of cheese. Second one was a crossmark, which has served me well in the past..no idea why it popped off, probably hadn’t seated it properly to be fair

    tpbiker

Tyre can be inflated with a tube fine, not tried them tubeless which is how I’d intend to run them.

My concern is the rim wall is really shallow already so i’m concerned the tyre could fairly easily roll off. No idea how likely that is, but it does give me cause for concern!

    tpbiker

yep was on the back…ran it tubeless, had done all of about 15 miles on it. I’ve also got one at the front, so seriously considering getting rid of it as well given the consequences of it doing the same thing:-(

I was aware when I bought it that it wasn’t going to be particularly tough, but given its not ridiculously light I expected slightly more for my 30 quid. Won’t be buying again thats for sure!

I’ve just tightened up all the nuts, and pumped them up to try again. All fine, then as soon as I depress the air valve the lower rides back up about 5 cm up the stanchion, even though there is no weight on the fork at all (its in a stand).

Can’t remember this happening beofore..think its jiggered, which is a bit pish given I’m in the middle of training for a race :-(

    tpbiker

Thats what I usually do and have no problems.

This time round it feels like the fork still has air in it, despite removing it all first. Its like it has dropped down to about 5 cm of travel. When I tap the thread ends all that happens is the fork compresses, rather than knocking them loose.

Theres no way I’d do that AE jump. In fact anything that involves clearing anything to get to the landing zone is well off limits..

you can actually see its quite steep from the angle of the fence on the left, so I agree its deceptive. Would argue its not the best bit of trail repair however, just another type of danger introduced to replace another..

Get yourself some of the multi release cleats to start with. Not everyones cup of tea, but I started using them when I couldn’t get confident moving from flats and they’ve been an absolute revelation. I hear tails of feet lifing out on the upstroke, but never happened to me in 4 months of using them.

Plus they have the advantage that not once have I had a ‘moment’ and toppled into a ditch, so gives me confidence to tackle even scary tecnical terrain

Stans 355 on XT hubs were going for 150 a pair last week at Merlin. I bought them in 26 inch, but they had 29rs for same price. No idea if they have any in stock at the mo, might be worth checking.

    ouch…although I deserved that…

Yeah you’re right it does! I was trying to unscrew the red nut, rather than the wee silver top cap!

In my defense it was on quite tight!

I shall hang my head in shame/embarasment. Thanks for the help :-)

i’m not sure if you can use a few spacers for the mount, however I can tell you from exp that even with the correct mount the rotor wont fit in your caliper. The raised bolts on the rotor are the problem.

I had the issue with my k18s, tried to realign, so did the bike shop. Didn’t work.

the very ones! I assumed there was a valve under there when they arrived, but since actually fitting them it appears to just be an adjuster knob. Certainly it doesn’t appear to lift up to reveal a valve.

Are they your forks Al, or just a pic from the net?

    tpbiker
    Free Member

    I don’t have a valve under either leg :-(

All I have is a rebound adjust on the left leg, and a allen bolt on the right!

take out the valve cores, best tip I’ve heard when trying to go tubeless to get the inital inflation of the wheel.

hmmm…started at Balerno, went round the side of the threipmuir reservoir, turn right at a post where everyone deems it acceptable to leave bags of dog shite, then up a climb followed by the downhill…

don’t know the pentlands to well…we have a nice wee route thats about 10 miles, but a couple of that after the downhill bit is tarmac.

Yeah the big drop at GT is really really steep! The platform might be only 3 feet high, but you drop a further 6 foot easily down the hill…if not more.Doesn’t help that the landing appears to onto the grass verge.

its a long long way…I bottled that one…even on my all singing all dancing all mountain behemoth..:-)
