I remember Chris Hoy was at my Uni Hall of residence during 1st year. We’d roll in smashed at 7am on a saturday morning, and couldn’t work out why some lad was going out for a bike ride…

    Makes sense now….

I’m with the OP…there is no way I’d ride a 4 year old bike off road. If I were you I’d get yourself one that won’t fall apart at any moment, and sell the current one as a ‘hack/pub’ bike in the clasifieds. I reckon you could get a couple of hundred quid for it, more than enough to cover the new custom paint job you’re after..

Actually, I might be in the market for a new commuter…mail me for a quick sale….

Not sure the budget will stretch to a Santa Cruz unfortunately :-( Even then my issue is my tiny legs…and as I’m not actually that short I need a medium in the toptube.

My budget was going to be closer to 1000-1500. And for that money the Canyon is stand out value. Although its bugger all value if it doesn’t fit I suppose :-(

    Thanks Rob…

They’ve gone up a bit in price haven’t they! My last pair were only a tenner!

I actually ended up going with an Evs rather than leatt one…i’d read it was less likely to break the collarbone, and also read somewhere that the leatt should not, under any circumstances be worn without the helmet as if you fell over whilst walking it actually increased the likelyhood of injury! Not sure how true this is however.

Either way, the EVS had zero adjustability…

    Condolences

As above I would arrange to speak to your Mortgage provider. I work for a very large bank (not anything to do with mortgages I’m afraid) and despite the terrible rep they have I’d be staggered if they wouldn’t do as much as they could to help. And remember, they don’t want to be taking your house from you so will look for a mutually beneficial outcome.

also…If its a Lloyds/Halifax mortgage I’d be happy to do some investigation to see whom the best person is to speak to you if you don’t feel up to being passed around the telephone banking system.

I thought about buying one for my alps trip….had pretty much decided it was a total waste of time/money, but a niggling doubt remained in my head… mainly about how silly Id feel if I scrimped on 200 quid and ended up breaking my neck.

In the end I bought one, it was ridiculously uncomfortable and looked like a toilet seat round my neck..

luckily I never got to find out whether it worked or not…I suspect not..

as above…I have a brand new 456 18 inch just waiting to be cut in two by my hamfisted good self using a cheap hacksaw..

well the main issue is the lack of fitting a dropper…so that would be sorted.

You are correct, i should get the 16 inch, but a they don’t have any in stock ..

will stick a ‘swap’ on the classifieds..

    coogan…

Are you refering to the vid? Because if you are fear not!

a: most of it was taken in Les Getz as the Morzine lifts were closed
b: all the nice technical stuff turned out horribly on the camera..far to bumpy, hence none included
c: We’re shit, so avoided all the dangerous looking stuff!

But its sunny, so whats not to like!

apparently its going to be dry tomorrow!

I’m always a bit wary of ripping up the trails when the weathers been this bad. In places the pentlands becomes like a bog..

I’ve even resorted to buying a roadbike…..looks like it’ll get its first outing tomorrow.

    + 1 a Giant x4 from Pauls for a grand.

I have the x3 and its an awesome bike. Brilliant on the ups, and more than capable on the downs on most of the stuff I come across on trail centres or out in the wilds. Agree about the wheels, first upgrade should be some better ones, I picked up some cheep 355s from merlin for under 150 quid and it made the bike even better.

Don’t think you’d find a better bike new for the money, however a quick google tells me you can get a trance x4 for 1070 quid, if you fancy a bit more travel

I had exactly the same issue. Inflated it about 10 times with lots of soapy water and it kept on deflating as soon as I removed the pump.

In the end I tried it with a different tyre, same issue. So I redid the yellow tape and it worked first time.

ie…Might be worth trying a different tyre to rule out a problem with the wheel?

finally narrowed it down to the bike above, or a 2010 boardman comp in good nick for 400 quid.

No blatant flirting with Solarpowered yet? You single guys are rubbish

I dont think shes Scotland based, otherwise I’d be definitely putting in a bid. A GF that bikes = better Birthday and chrimbo pressies I imagine

I was thinking of an uplift day at fortbill, but then i saw the course (from the gondela) during my recent 10 under ben excursion. **** that…it looked brutal.

Just back from a week in Morzine and the Blacks appeared easy in comparison. (they werent, but at least I could get down them.

is that a hardtail about to be taken down the fort bill downhill Northwind? Brave man!

Didnt work with me. DP Highroller popped off rim 2 days into alps holiday. Have never had problems with tubeless before.

at least he was offered a heckler. My mate wanted one and they insisted he take a full on downhill bike, because the hecklers were only suitable for cross country????!

my mate took his rockhopper out last week. He managed to go down everything we did (including the blacks) without it completely falling apart. He did need a wheel build at the end, and was rather slow…but he didnt die

Les Gets has been a bit of a let down to be honest, to many BMX style tracks for my liking. The canyon was fun though, as is the ride down from the top of les gets back to Morzine.

Definitely would wait until the entire resort is open next time as although we knew it wasn’t, we at least thought Morzine would be open.

Which Pleney run are we saying is crap? We managed to get up to the top at the end of the day and hit the Black run down to the bottom. Isn’t it a world cup downhill track? Either way its anything but flat and boring, especially on anything other than a downhill rig. The rooty bit at the top was brutal.

We can get to Le Gets via going up the Pleny Telecabin. Fine to que once a day, but not ideal doing it all day.

Found the canyon, really good. Weather is ace today, although was thundering last night really badly

    So hang about.

I’ve paid for 1 bike and 1 hold bag at 20k weight.

I assumed that meant I could bring a bike up to 32k, and a big holdall with all my gear (weighing up to 20k)

Am I misreading this, because if I’ve not then we’re screwed. 4 of us flying out next week…

Even worse…I sent all my stuff out on wednesday in my mates car, so I won’t be able to bring it home!

Anyone else heading out there next week?

What kind of hit am I going to take on a tyre if I buy one out there. I’m assuming it’ll be no more than RRP?

    Some great advice folks…

As long as the lifts are running then I guess its just a case of trying to get down the mountain as fast as possible if theres a hint of lightening.

Good call about the Swampthings/Wetscreams…although a bit agrieved I just spent 80 quid on a pair of minnions. having said that given I fly out on Monday I can’t gt hold of any anyhow, unless anyone has them in Edinburgh

    As above

    http://www.morznet.com/item_files/portes_du_soleil_summer_lift_timetable.pdf

The Pleney Cable car is open, as is most of Les Gets. I was told that nearly all the runs were accesible via the Pleney lift, so I imagine plenty to do.

I’m heading out on Monday, going to do a couple of days riding on my own then the boys are joining me on the thursday for 3 days.

If you’re not hammering the downhills then how nessecary are dual ply tyres. I’m off to Morzine on Monday, I’ve bought the DP 2.5 supertacky minion for the front and HR 60 DP at the back which will do me for the uplift stuff, but was considering doing a day exploring the xc routes round there, and was thinking the aformentioned tyres might be overkill.

Was wondering if a day of XC bimbling on a set of 2.35 singleply high rollers, potentially tubeless, would be a disaster waiting to happen.

stuck a pencil on my fork about a couple of mm away from my rim, then spun the wheel and no rubbing at random points, and no visible wobble either. maybe the title of the thread was a bit misleading, the aren’t ‘loose’ as such, but slightly more flex in them than I think ideal

I’ve just given each nipple a quick tighten (probably no more than an eighth of a turn) which has tightened things a bit, but i’m reluctant to do anything more drastic in case i pull the wheel out of shape. Will ask the chap in the bike shop if its a concern, i don’t think it will be.

    tpbiker

why would it be a joke?

As i already mentioned, its not like they’re rattling about…but when you grab two of them you can flex them together a bit more than on my new set. I compared them to my mates bike that hes had for a similar period and his were much the same. if i thought the wheel was going to collapse i obviously wouldn’t use it, but its nowhere near that bad

I’ve never tightened a spoke in my life, I assumed that was far to easy to pull the rim out of shape, so i’d end up with something worse than i started with.

It ok made, and is quite user friendly. Where the remote falls down however is where it attaches to the seat. basically the lever gets crud in it and won’t operate correctly. plenty of maintenance of this part required
