They said try it in the hill before you decide. Well you’ve tried it, and it doesn’t feel right, so either try some more or try it with the adjuster open a bit more and see how it feels.

If rebound is set too slow it can “pack down,” where successive hits result in the wheel
getting deeper and deeper into the travel. This will result in not having enough travel to
deal with subsequent hits. Most people don’t realize that a symptom of too much rebound
damping is harshness on compression. This is due to the bike riding deeper in the travel,
and your hands and feet working against higher forces in the springs. A common fix for
harshness is to reduce compression damping, but if you are packing down, it will exacerbate
the problem. Another symptom of slow rebound is your bike sitting too deep in turns
(especially fast berms). If your bike has the rebound set properly, you won’t be thinking about
rebound while you are riding.

jmatlock I said at the beginning “who am I to argue with mojo”. But my experience is that lots of rebound leads to packing down and harshness.
I’m no expert.
I don’t think renton is hellbent on ignoring them, it’s just that his bike now feels harsh, so I think we should work on helping him get to the bottom of that.

Surely its the same thing. If it’s packing down because rebound is to slow then it will feel harsh as there is no travel to absorb the next hit.

Yes, but there are other causes to harshness, like too much pressure (effectively too hard a spring) or too much compression damping.

If it feels soft on a single bump but gets hard on the way into a bumpy section then it is probably packing down.

If it is packing then there is too much rebound.

Scruff good point, I forgot about setting the pressure in the first place.
I do this by setting static sag 25-33%, followed by Scruffs method, ie if the pressure that makes your static sag is too soft and you blow through, then up it a bit until it just bottoms on your biggest jump (or vice versa).

I dunno anything about bedding in. There is lots of myth and legend over suspension..

PPS in my experience slow rebound leads to harshness, the shock will pack down really quickly and just feel locked out. I would start on zero rebound and bracket to half rebound, then work your way in from there. Most of my suspension has the rebound in the faster half, and I am devilishly handsome because of it.

I am not a fan of slow rebound, but who am I to argue with Mojo.

I would go over the same bit of track loads of times until you know it and it feels the same repeat-ably. (make it mixed, but short so repeating does not become nauseous)
Then repeat with some bracketing of the settings.

What kind of repair defects are they?
IS the deposit protected?
Has he served the proscribed info about the deposit?
Does it have current gas safety cert and EPC?

PS My advice at the top and here is based on legal remedies-just withholding rent willy nilly without going through due process is stupid and potentially damaging only to her. She may be able to withhold rent, but only if she observes correct procedure. Get some lawyer advice, or at least start with the council.

Luckily a new law was enshrined a few days ago to prevent so called revenge evictions. I think it is a stupid law, but it will be dead handy for your daughter in this situation. Write tot he landlord outlining all the issues, CC the letter to the local council environmental health dept (get a name of an EHO with responsibility for housing)

Essentially he cannot evict if the repairs are deemed necessary.
The letter needs to give him reasonable notice to carry out the essential work. After which in theory she can get the work done and take the money out of the rent, but I am not sure of the mechanics of this.
The best advice is to get a lawyer to help..

I am a landlord. I am pro landlord, generally pro tenant, but anti agent..
I am attempting to write this in alight hearted and helpful non critical style, so please do not take offence, I’m not flaming or criticising you, just advising and probing your opinion.

Good news: The landlord and agent do not have a legal right of entry, you can refuse entry at any time. Despite what it might say in the contract, you cannot sign your rights away.
In fact you could write to the agent and landlord explicitly expressing that you rescind any permission for them to enter the flat ever unless you directly give your permission in writing.
You are also within your rights to change the locks[/url] and not give the landlord/agent a key.
The landlord could then only gain access with your permission, or with a court order for necessary access. EG if you refuse to let the plumber in for a legally required gas test.

Continued access by the landlord without your permission could be seen as harassment and can lead to prison sentences.

The bad news:
How do you enforce this? Unless you change the locks, then if the landlord/agent behaves as he has done (ie not often and semi reasonably) the courts are unlikely to see this as harassment.
The landlord/agent would need to be making regular unannounced/unreasonable visits to be actual harassment.
The letter was sent at short notice, which is crap of them, and typical agent behaviour, but is it really any loss or inconvenience to you?
Let me ask you if they knocked on the door and asked if they could come in with zero notice would you refuse? EG “we were just passing..”

It depends on your relationship with the agent and what you want your relationship to be with the agent.

For me I blimmin hate agents, so my red mist action would be to write to them and say that unless you give express written permission then they cannot enter. Any attempts to enter without permission will be treated as harassment and recorded for a case you are preparing against them. I might even change the locks (just replace the barrels)
But I am a belligerent so and so, and this would likely lead to continued sour relations and be unproductive for everyone.

A more reasonable approach would be to write to them to ask that as soon as they make an apptmnt with a valuer, plumber whatever that triggers an automatic letter rather than relying on phone permission. Meanwhile swallow your pride and think that in reality no harm has been done and you are not actually being harassed. (Unless there is more to this than you have told us?)
