Thanks for the feedback. Might give it a go, I have got a gravel bike on order and I like the idea of something locally (relatively speaking) made for when it arrives.

Those camelchops bike bags look great, I have been looking at them. Do you have any experience of them OP?

The level of system integration in a modern car is huge. So many systems are interdependent, unless you have detailed knowledge of the electrical architecture then you have no idea if any of the systems will work when you take one part of the system away. It’s not just the dash and abs/esp, it’s also the power steering, body control module, alarm systems, the list goes on. Some ECUs also act as gateways for CAN systems, so take one of those away and other parts of the car will start to play up in a way that you might not expect. You also have network management functions which are very sensitive to the power up sequence and can prevent the car from shutting down correctly if not respected. Ok a mk1 leaf might not be at the cutting edge of modern day electrical systems, but cars going back 10 years – such as the leaf – will still be complex.

Messing about with modern cars isn’t like restoring an old Porsche, Land Rover or camper van. It’s not a case of just a bunch of wires providing 12v and a ground, it’s way beyond that. The point I’m making is that the OP could spend a load of time and effort getting the mechanical systems (roughly) together, but then he might find he hits a brick wall because of a software integration issue that he has no chance of fixing. On the other hand he might be very lucky and not have any issues, but i would be surprised if this is the case. If he wants a fun project where he changes the driveline, then an old land rover / Porsche would be a much better bet, and be a nicer car than a leaf at the end of it all too.

It’s not the mechanicals its all the wiring. Cambus etc.

    Plus sva test

You can buy an aftermarket ECU harness to run the engine. The rest of the car is just the same once the loom is spliced in.

That might get the engine to run, but all the other systems on the car (ABS & ESP, dashboard, etc) will be looking for information from the battery and motor system, and are pretty certain to throw a wobbly when they don’t receive the relevant CAN frames

Agree on curved TVs being pointless. We inherited one and I wouldn’t buy one when this one dies – they are physically deeper because of the curve, plus if you sit off centre then it’s a compromise. Just a gimmick really.

What’s the WBAC value of it now you’ve had it a few months? I would consider getting rid if it’s favourable, it depends how much you value your time and any associated stress.

Jakester – you said that the problem with online services is that you thought they were flaky. In my experience, they aren’t.

As you are asking for other peoples advice and experiences, I thought I’d share them with you, as I thought it may be helpful to share that a different device may be better. You can pick up a fire stick for < £30 on Amazon at the moment, I would imagine a hdd recorder would be much more than this. Also, if you don’t like it, you can always send back to Amazon at no cost to you.

But if you want to be rude, then crack on.

How about a better smart tv function such as fire stick (cheap at the moment with Black Friday) or an Apple TV. We watch all our tv through an Apple TV (we don’t have an aerial) and all the apps are reliable

When we last moved, I inherited a chest freezer that the previous owner left in the garage. I didn’t want it, so put it on eBay, £1 buy it now. I didn’t realise that eBay also listed it as an auction, starting bid of 1p – never mind I thought, anybody who wants it will just use the buy it now option.

Anyhow, somebody decided that they would try and save 99p, and bid 1p on it. This then removed the buy it now option. The same guy who initiated the bidding at 1p ended up paying £15 for it!

Cheap car (Yaris etc) and a comprehensive breakdown cover? If you are lucky not to pick a dud, it’ll be a lot cheaper in the long run and do the same job. Also no worrying about car park dents and scratches from a lease car…

Er, not really, did Rab design the zip?. Zips fail because of wear and tear, contaminants, and folk howking at them blindly forcing them up or down.

Er, yes. Rab chose the zip, there aren’t that many parts to a coat, so you’d expect them to check that the zips that they use are of sufficient quality, last x cycles of being open and closed, are tolerant to a reasonable about of misalignment when being opened and closed, etc.

Contaminants and people blindly forcing them up and down would come under abuse, although in the case of contaminants it is unreasonable to expect none whatsoever, unless Rab expect people to do their zips up in a vacuum.

As others have said, they shouldn’t enhance their reputation by offering what appears to be lifetime warranties and easy repairs, and then change their mind as they see fit. I really like my Rab gear, but I will think twice for future purchases.

It might not be a manufacturing fault, but if it hasn’t been abused as per the OP’s claim, then that must be a design fault. At which point, they should apply good will and fix it.

Why not fix for longer? If the expectation is that rates are going up, then fix long term. We recently remortgaged and there were 7 and 10 year fixes readily available

In the grand scheme of buying and selling most houses, 5-10k isn’t really a fat lot. So I would definitely be looking well north of that. The idea above of 10% of the value of his house may be flippant, but it’s not a bad idea to somehow make it a proportion of the value of his house

These bikers who are so aware of all their surroundings that the vast majority of them think it’s a good idea to ride within 2m of the car in front’s bumper whilst they wait for their next overtake?

Ok – it might be that Molgrips hasn’t done everything exactly how those posting on this thread may have done, but it’s clear that this thread is starting to frustrate/upset him, so why don’t we all just leave it be, and leave it to Molgrips to update us if he wishes if he gets it fixed/it gets worse.
