Sat nav for driving on roads – GPS for navigating.

Serious question – can you use a map and compass properly? If not, a GPS would just take you to places, run out of power and leave you confused.

HOW? Are you floaty light on the pedals ?

Given that I weigh 250 lbs and can't pick a good line for dog toffee, I guess I'm just lucky. Oh – I barely maintain, so perhaps the fact I don't faff around with stuff once it is fitted helps things.

Everyone has woes of premature wear on kit – but nobody really comments if their kit just keeps going. It is always the way with spares etc even in business – people only usually comment when it is adverse – not when it works.

I've run Mini Monos on my bike for 3 years – changed the pads twice in that time and they weren't new when I got them. Never managed to trash a BB – not square taper, not HTII. Never snapped a seat post, only broken wheels when they were so old the spokes started to go (mostly down to my weight).
Kit now is as good if not better than ever – the internet provides a focus for more users to get together and comment on disproportional reports of broken kit. Better protection and more suspension allows people to ride beyond their limits more often, meaning kit takes more abuse than ever – often beyond design specs I'd guess. Also, as the sort of people to buy the newest most technical shiny kit, we see more of the teething troubles than we ever saw before.

what matt said. Buy some storage as well – shelves and some boxes (Solent Plastics for the used crate/box win). Make a work bench from Wickes laminate worktop (£20 for 2 metres) and a few quids worth of timber and coach bolts. Fluoro lights for best light.

Find your local small indie flooring shop. Have a chat with them and tell them what sort of colour and type you are after. If you are not overly fussed on time and not uber-concerned on colour you might do really well. I've done this in 2 towns previously and had great success with stairs and smaller room carpets. It gives the shop a known outlet for ends of rolls and side cuts from commercial jobs and means they can spread work out. Looks after the carpet version of the LBS as well.

I do love seeing the left of centre getting all wound up over the monarchy. Bumping your gums has achieved, erm, nowt?

Bless your woven hemp socks and pass me another copy of Socialist Worker. Love you all.

In theory there is still nothing to stop Elizabeth II requesting you hand over your first born child to her.

Of course there isn't. Nothing has changed since King Herod. We're all oppressed and downtrodden. SMASH THE SYSTEM!

interesting troll there project. Are you telling me that everyone in a council house on income support should be prepared to be filmed 24 hrs a day? Even her existence brings more tourism cash to this country than most anyone. Are you supporting your local businesses as well?

Buy a bigger range of brushes, brush crud off with water, then use less muc off. I only use it for the last bit on the moving parts. A bottle lasts ages that way. Also, buy the concentrate and make it up yourself.

The other day I pulled up alongside a year or two old jap 4*4 and was amused to notice the rear drum brakes and leaf springs. Now theres progress…

However, the engine and drivetrain will get beyond the next 12 months – as opposed to other brands mentioned around these parts. Electrics too I'd guess.

If he is tall, don't bother. They will only pres the bottom of the trousers and not get the top creased section inside.

Having had years of Land Rover work-based motoring, buy something else. Then again, I guess you are a rabid believer so won't even try something else.

Other manufacturers have taken their vehicles into the 21st Century you know. They have ride comfort and handling and proper seats and everything.

Excellent couple of hours today. Great to see so many people – and I shed a tear when ADH didn't turn up.

29ers have not taken off here as much as the USA in toto. Perhaps something to do with our always being right as a nation? Hardcore hardtail or nothing! Harrumph!

2 x knives & 1 x sharpening steel. One chefs knife with about an 8" blade and a paring knife with a shorter blade. Unless you are doing your own butchering or fish filleting you don't need more than that – and a bread knife.

On, as the heat will expand the air present and help ensure you get it all out. The higher pressure of the system running also helps.

ADH – might have. Then again, I may be inviting Scum into some sort of pervy toy-fest that involves his trousers.

IHN – about 11:45 if last month is anything to go by. Bring a trestle table if you have one!

You can forget huddling with me and Scum, ADH. It would look like we were trying to abduct a 12 year old!

Scum – should I bring my new toy for you to try for size?

    For me, 38 inches.

    But I am mostly simian.

Point A is the spine – yes. Any of the shops on Jermyn St in London will be able to assist!

"Sleeve length – You will need some assistance for this. First bring your elbow up to the same height as your shoulder. Now bend your elbow so that your upper and forearm is at an angle of approximately ninety degrees.

Now for the assistance, you should be measured from the middle of the back (point A), along the back of the arm and around the elbow towards the wrist (point B). Choose where you would like your cuff to rest on your wrist and read the measurement at that point."

Your call, but close to the wrist bone at the above point.

Some people do, some don't. Drink driving will be the worst thing in the world to someone who has lost a family member to such a driver. It is also premeditated as you did it before you got into the car. The other common distractions also cause problems.

whippersnapper – read my question again – I'm asking why zokes has a problem with people who think DD is such a bad crime – I'm questioning his view of their view.

Also – why is zokes getting so wound up about something reported in the media? He is taking the bait tied to the end of 'the political line' set by the journalist and reacting to a reported reaction. Amused at the irony of being outraged by the outrage of others, as reported by a journalist.

zokes – why do you have such an issue with other people having an issue with drinking and driving? You are virtually frothing at the mouth.

Drinking and driving used to be a much bigger issue than it is now. Enforcement and education have reduced the numbers. The numbers increase at this time of year, hence the higher profile. Why your issue with it?

clubber – I've tried to meet the man but to no avail. I've been riding what are supposed to be his local trails with ADH, been to the Bike Jumble but no sign of TUT anywhere. I have only been able to base my mental picture of him from what ADH told me – and what the honest, upright, truthful citizens of STW say on here. From this, I gather he is:

    Grumpy
    Water soluble

Can anyone else add to the list?

Drink driving is premeditated. Consuming something that has a detrimental effect upon your reaction times and then driving? Well worth prosecuting as it is a conscious decision and the potential outcome is well known.

Tell them to get Ay Ups. No maintenance required, waterproof and the battery doesn't lose a charge when not used and has a 6 hr burn time.

Get back to work you slacker.

A 29er might suit you, it might not. You need to try one rather than just buying one as a replacement for a 26er. They make different sense for different people. For me, I get a better-fitting bike in my size – it just happens to roll better etc for me. I'd also take the 'not so good for tight' claims. My Scandal has the old geometry forks on and doesn't handle that well in tight turns etc. I have ridden the new geometry Fox forks and the handling is so much better. As design for 29ers gets tweaked they get better. Regardless, you might not like them. I'm now 29er only and haven't looked back.

Bike UK in Clifton have some nice stuff and good staff, Webbs of Warmley (NE of Bristol) for nice road stuff. Don't go to the Fred Baker shop out of the centre – Lodge Causeway – nothing like their other shop. Most of the rest are covered up there.

Nasty experience – got it in my 20s. Spots EVERYWHERE – yes, EVERYWHERE – and they itch and itch and the cream barely helps. Sick feeling, drained. I was nearly admitted when the spots inflamed and were threatening to close my windpipe and throat. Just pray that if you do get it, you get a light case of it. I was knackered for weeks.
