In the last 20 years I’ve lived in 16 different places (most in the UK) and worked in 17 different countries. Bristol was the stand-out best of them all. It has arts, culture, food, beer, sports, festivals, events, local identity, diversity of every kind, good access to the rest of the UK etc etc.
The grass isn’t greener, it’s just a different shade of green.

Edited to add – the people I met there really made it.

Scott had a 3 position bar mounted control for their rear shocks on the Genius bikes back in 2005. It worked very well and was cable actuated.

Wind things on and my 2009 Turner Sultan with a Turner / DW spec RP23 shock rides far better than the Scott Genius ever did and I never have to touch the shock.

It’s interesting but it isn’t something I need more electronics to solve – not when a 5 year old bike already does it for me.

I got a Honeywell wifi one. I couldn’t see the extra cost of a Nest brought me that much added value. Being able to set, adjust etc from my phone is the biggest single improvement. Fitted it myself, one call to helpline (it is an air pump system) and no worries since. App is a doddle to use.

JCL – selective extraction of information can ‘prove’ anything you want it to.

Those silly slippers aren’t Haflingers. THIS is a Haflinger

Amazingly good 4WD in their time.

When they say ‘shortest seat stays possible’ and have a seat tube that short then my alarm bells ring.

You put a long seat post on that and you’ll be way up and back, very close to being above the rear axle. I used to have a Scott Genius that ended up like that and it was actually hard to keep the front wheel down. Riding up any sort of incline saw me nearly off the back.

I’d avoid, regardless of any other aspect.

I don’t know if Bitchin’ Rides has hit the UK yet but his team are very good at what they do

Fast n loud, Fantomworks, Bitchin Rides, Wheeler Dealers. We get them all on a channel called Velocity here in the US. It is my default no-brain TV when I’m lying on the sofa drinking beer.

We bought one of the last Samsung plasma screens for buttons – way cheaper than the equivalent quality of LED display. Bought an external Roku box to go with it. That’ll see us through until 4k or whatever settles down and that tech gets better priced.

a thin sheet of this material has an insulation value far greater than a thick sheet of polystyrene foam, for example

Do you like misleading people intentionally? Not a representative comparison at all.

    Further info:
    External
    Internal

External insulation usually out-performs internal, but costs more. If you have a house that needs re-rendering or similar, then it might be worth you looking into it. If not, and you can cope with the disruption and loss of internal space, internal MIGHT work for you.

Just contact some builders and ask them to trot along and explain what they would do to make your house warmer. A good builder will be very well clued up about insulation to the latest standards and new materials are extremely cost-effective.

I would certainly not add insulation to the outside of a house.

Well you’re a fine one for advice. Most builders don’t know the first thing about building science, hence why you’ve probably given such duff advice about external insulation.

As matt said, it’s been far more common across Europe for far longer. The UK is getting to grips with it and it’s becoming far more common and that is a very good thing. You can get far more insulation outside than you can inside, so that’s in your favour. You also have an insulated external layer with a solid thermal mass inside, and that is the optimal place to have any thermal mass in a building.

OP – look round for specialist external insulation contractors in the area and seek recommendations. It’s a very good way of improving the performance of your house.

Saint-Gobain are pretty good with the clear stuff as well.

I’m on my second one of these. Fantastic bits of kit that do nose, ear and eyebrows – because if they haven’t gone yet, they will do.

    Honest! I bought from John Knight Glass, they quoted £226 extra for a 3G over 2G in a 4 panel (3600mm x 2100mm) bi-fold.

Quite a specialist bit of glass really. I’m not surprised that the cost difference was so low. For more ‘normal’ windows I’d expect quite a bit more difference.

I live in the US and I couldn’t believe that buying a Reverb seatpost from CRC was cheaper than anywhere else.

If the condensation problems are in the windows, then the sealed units are no longer sealed. If the condensation problems are in the rest of the house, then replacement windows won’t solve those problems.

Unless I had a lot of glazed area and were chasing a particular level of certification or I had soundproofing needs I’d probably not bother with triple glazing. The price increase over double glazing does not give you an incremental improvement. It’s diminishing returns.

You been living under a rock?

Don’t you read the near-daily posts from renton? He’s been living a soap opera life and hasn’t got time to read about bikes!

Eh? It has happened before, as have attempts. The police know that bikers have been targeted by being followed home from AC and have issued suitable advice.
AC is not without its troubles, and it does nobody any favours to pretend otherwise.

Oh have a word with yourself. To my knowledge this is the 2nd occurrence in many years (as someone else up there said). The article is also from a couple of months ago. I didn’t refer to any other issues, nor did the poster, nor did the article. I know people have been followed, I know cars have been broken into, but ROBBERY in LW or AC is a rare thing, which is what I said.

Bristol. Cheap, easy flights from Newcastle. It’s a great city to explore, loads in the centre and you could easily do it without a car for a couple of days. History, arts, culture, beer, food, Bath just a short train ride away.

I had one for 8 years from new and only sold it to move overseas. Not the biggest estate but great for what it is. Handles really nicely, the 2.0D is pokey where you need it and I loved the 6 speed manual box. The leather trim is pretty robust, you can get nearly 60mpg on a very good run and still get high 30s around the doors.
Drop the back seats and you can get the bike in with the front wheel off and the seat down – even at my size I could do that.
I bought the V50 after trying the equivalent Jag, Honda, Audi, Saab, Alpha and BMW and would do so again.

just putting down to much ‘awesum’power..

    *cough*bolleaux*cough*

    leg press 240kg

    Go you

As a starting point, in the US, a bike can’t be sold unless it’s chain has a tensile strength of 1800 lbf. That equates to over 800 kg. Material fatigue, user error, bad spannering – perhaps. Putting down the power? Nope. Not without something else contributing.

This discussion comes up AAALLLL the time on Clyde forums and it’s usually big / fat guys claiming that they have teh awsum power and break stuff. Most chains have a breaking strain of ‘quite a lot’ so it tends to be abuse that will lead to them breaking.

zippy – is your loft sealed in ie is it vented at the eaves? If it is, putting insulation up in the rafters will do little at best and nothing at worst. If you have any insulation on the attic floor / ceiling of the upstairs, then that is where you need to insulate, or properly seal in the attic then insulate.

    TooTall

zippy – that probably isn’t your ‘loft insulation’ per se. If the eaves haven’t been sealed then the insulation part will be what’s between the attic space and the ceiling of the 1st floor. The tin foil bubble wrap is not great and you’ve probably not got a sealed in attic.

plums – probably not. Those that will lift the boards will likely charge you for the pleasure and any insulation that would be better performance for the same thickness would cost an awful lot more money. You’d be better off raising the floor a couple of inches and having the thicker insulation put in (I’ve just done half of my attic like that myself).

Go down to the coast. Tynemouth (inc castle), Cullercoats, St Mary’s Island. All kids love the beach esp if they live inland. Tynemouth Long Sands in the winter will toughen them up!

I know, but £47 buys a lot of electricity

which isn’t there if you lose power and REALLY want the most from that stove of yours.
Free energy and you’d buy a plug in electric fan? Bonkers.

Us big guys need the right mattress and it’s hard to find one you will both agree on. Memory foam didn’t work for me and we’ve not got the firmest sprung mattress available and it’s a great nights sleep.

Think about it – you spend far more time in bed than you do anywhere else in life. It’s well worth spending the money.

mamadirt – let me know and I’ll show you the good and bad of RVA in terms of riding and living. We’re an hour from C’ville, 95 miles from DC. Real estate is 1/3 of the price in DC but I’d still love a few acres out in the Shenandoah Valley if there was work there!

What McHamish said. Timber treatment isn’t nice and anything that has been absorbed by the wood in it’s working life could be a bit yuck when it’s off-gassing under you in your nice warm house.
Just buy some reclaimed wood and save yourself the hassle.

We hired a chasing cutter. 2 parallel cutting discs that you ran up / along a brick/block/plaster wall. It cuts 2 nice parallel lines and you can just knock out what’s in between. Well worth hiring if you are doing more than a room of chasing. Just like what that alan chap said.

Well I’m in Richmond VA (UCI Road World Champs 2015 are here) and we’ve got some of the best city centre trails in the country and we’re working towards IMBA Trail Center status.
We’ve got some Grade IV rapids in the city centre as well if that floats your boat/tube/SUP. If you’re passing nearby, say hello!

I’ve moved a lot over the years.
Rent first. You need to get a feel for a place and we all see things differently. 6 or even 12 months would be enough for you to get around your new locales and see where you might want to live. Even with the best research in the world your chances of hitting the sweet spot are slim.
