I was going to recommend an XXL 5 Spot, but you want cheap.

    Find an old Kona Hoss.

    I take it you've not ridden a 29er then.

Taller than 95% of the population, hating 29ers out of hand and wanting a cheap bike that fits you? Get real.

Oh – with the seatpost that high, most anything should be easy to loft the front on – but nigh on impossible to keep down on all but the most gentle climb. Your weight will be so high and far back you'll be the wheely king.

Salt works fine down to about -7C. I'm sure we'll all agree that is sufficient for most winters most years. We've got atypical weather at the moment. If you have sustained cold spells below -7C, then you do what Germany etc do – which is suitable for them, but not for UK really.

It is law in Germany. Many Germans wouldn't buy them if they didn't have to.

S_O – you have limp wrists. I've never had a problem with the SKS one that I've ridden with for several years

I've got a Dinotte light for exactly that reason. It works very well.

Onza – do you tell the difference between a smart suit jacket and a casual jacket by the ability to roll the sleeves up?

'Crockett and or Tubbs' is not a good look this year/century/millennium. Turn ups are very much not a good look on trousers.

Probably a hell of a lot safer

Definitely not a hell of a lot safer.

If you keep working hard, you could afford to move to a nice place where you don't get this sort of problem.

Your arrogance to therefore condemn everyone in uniform is truly staggering and only one step below the glib pontification of sfb.

There are, as usual, the 'its what they joined for' posters here in stw-land.

There are tens of thousands in the Armed Forces. I can't tell you why they all joined because they all have different reasons. If you decide you don't want to do that sort of thing, then thats fine as you have your own reasons. Please don't assume that everyone joined up for the reasons YOU think they joined up for. They probably didn't. I can't explain what part of a person drives them to 'serve' in whatever role, but it is there in quite a few people. You may not believe there is honour in that, but many do. At least they believe in whatever they believe in enough to actually do something about it.

Most of them sign up so they can get a gun and be a hero.

Either you are being very ironic, or a c***weasel. I do hope it is the former.

Smartwool socks – not cheap, but a superb present and the very best socks I've ever used. I'll not buy anything else now.

Two pairs of socks are not a must and, as the guy in question has done that many Wainrights, he probably has his feet and boots well sorted by now.

I sorted these out last night and, teaching myself as I went, hemmed them on the sewing machine! I am a domestic god!

I was pleased to keep some of the zip for ventilation and put the velcro tabs back on. They come to about 3" below my knee when legs are bent, so down to anyone else's ankles!

Get them hitched right up to your crotch, sit down with your knees at 90 degrees, see where you want them to come down your leg, cut them there. Find someone to hem them on a sewing machine – no need to use anything fancy – just polyester thread and a sharp needle.

Let me rant about the services that I expect to be there, no matter what happens:

    Police – yup
    Ambulance – yup
Schools – not in bad weather
    Fire – nope – we'll strike

I have expectations of certain professions being professional. I just find the irony in a fireman complaining that someone isn't at work amusing.

You should maintain dignity, ride there on a sit-up-and-beg bike with brake rods, supervise from a discreet distance and then return home escorting the young chap. This should all be carried out whilst wearing tweed and possibly with a pipe clamped twixt teeth.

Anything else will just end up in son wondering how to get dad to A&E!

An amusing thread. Even more amusing that a fireman started it.

bonesetter – do you know what I mean when I say 'build one with Dave Yates'? I'd be very alarmed if anyone who had built a bike with him had it break – he is one of the most experienced frame builders in the UK – don't confuse him with 'self build'.

    TooTall

Why not go to Dave Yates and build the damn thing yourself? I'm sure he could build most things – he has so far.

Si – I hate to point you at another bike company, but Competitive Cyclist in the USA won't be fighting for the same customer base. Have a look at their website and see how they have broken down target builds. It does go a lot further, but it is food for thought.

M&S are rated by at least 2 tailors I've known for OTP quality and a fair cut for what you pay for. The brands you've mentioned are more of an English cut and classic rather than 'fuddy duddy'. Most of the big name fashion houses that make suits haven't got a clue about fit.
Make sure you wear a decent shirt and shoes when you try on – I've seen so many guys with t-shirt and trainers trying suits on. Most get them too tight on the shoulders and short in the sleeve.
I'm bespoke only these days. The only way I can get a good fit.

clubber – stop feigning interest! If you want to try them, come on over and try my bikes.

The bigger wheels mean that there is more of a drop from the wheel axle line to the BB than on a 26" bike, which keeps the BB and therefore the pedals the same height as a 26" bike. It makes me, as a tall bloke, feel more like I'm sitting in the bike than perched on top of it – so more my size.

Think of it as your little one getting a first bike – wee wheels to start, up to 16" wheels, perhaps 20", then possibly the big jump up to 26". These increase with size – so doing the same for taller people is the next logical step. You're easily taller than 95% of the people on the planet, so a bigger (IMHO) makes sense.

    the violent religion

Just like the Paedophile Catholic Priests it doesnt mean ALL Catholics are Paedophiles now does it?

So. Why are you blanket-covering Islam as a violent religion? Did you open any books at school? Xenaphobia at best and a poor troll.

You really do need to read the posts I'm referring to before you sound off at me you chump.

Ton, so basically you will end up with a reinforced (heavier) ti29 frame? Why?!

He'll end up with something best suited to him – which is what custom is at best isn't it? Other than trolling, I don't understand your post.

So – Dales_rider – you're not a scholar then? I was hoping for some education in something other than cut, copy and paste (which didn't back up your initial post on this thread BTW). Shame – I thought you might have something to back up your assertion of the violent religion.
