Turner Sultan. Brilliant bike that does everything better than I can.

Rust in the filler neck from the fuel cap is a car killer – beware! You want 100% solid panels too – obsolete is a word you hear with Mk 1 panels.

You'd be surprised at the forces going through things on a roof rack. Given you plan to do it at points it isn't designed to take those forces, then it is your adventure. Then again, I've seen what happens when you don't secure loads properly for freight movement so I probably over-restrain everything I move.

Try one of the adjustable stems first. They are not rad but very good for sorting out which position is the best for a lady, then trying to find a stem that matches (if she then needs a more rad stem).

    That worked well.

You could alway try not dealing with it and asking a forum full of middle-aged cyclists what to do next.

There is an awful lot to be said for living a long way away from either family – but then again we both get on with respective elders. You need to put it into context too – having kids is not new – she has experience (although in a different age) and you don't. All babies are different and just remind her of that because no two sets of parents have the same experiences.

Showing your age Houns – I think it was known as RAF Chicksands in the last century!

OK you miserable lot – today – you're doing nothing – get your bike stuff down and get it sold and buy some more.

I have experience of both ends of the frame sizing spectrum.

Just so you know where I'm coming from. I used to think this was the most comfortable thing in the world:

Then I got this and discovered a whole new world of how things should be:

and finally, I have this – the monster truck that can do anything I can, only better:

The first two bikes are both 21" frames – the Turner is 23". I still maintain the difference between a L and XL in the same bike will be tiny in handling performance – the length of the top tube might be relevant, but the axle to axle, angles and BB height will be pretty much the same. Or are the big blokes with kiddy bikes just making excuses for their inability to move a bike around?

Keep the noise down over there – they are a fad! Silly boy.

What Bill said – a pootle around the factories saw me buying from Cheaneys for my most recent work shoes. They are as splendid as one might expect.

If you were of better breeding, you'd know that hip flasks without captive tops are to be avoided for that exact reason. Have you just been promoted to middle class?

My left and right specific socks have L and R on the respective socks to prevent such a mishap.

Go and ride a big MTB. Then go and ride a BMX. The BMX will no question feel more 'chuckable' – i.e. changes direction quicker, easier to throw around, easier to hop/jump. OK this may be somewhat to do with geometry, but part of it definitely the physical size of the fame.

Yes – the difference between a MTB and a BMX are rather large – hence the choice of tool for job. However, the difference between a L and XL in a frame are so minimal on the 'chuckability' front that it can't be more than a couple of hundred grammes difference. Example – Turner 5 Spot geometry:

    2010-Turner-5-spot

Those numbers are not that far apart, the contact points are going to be similmar distances apart, the wheel base will be similar. So, between a S and an XL there might be a decent difference, but there is almost nothing between L and XL.

I get 'chuckability', when it is the difference between a BMX and a MTB. I don't get it when people claim the differences up or down a frame size. The numbers aren't different enough.

My bike looks good with the seat dropped, silly with it raised

Image more important than performance shocker!

It went on his Whyte which made it even more fugly

Man forces bike that is evidently too small to 'fit' shocker!

the chuckability of a smaller frame.

One of the most overused phrases in cycling perpetuated by men who think they like a bike thats too small for them.

I have strong rumours of things like Fox Vanilla forks and Avid brake sets being up for sale on Saturday – along with my as new Bonty carbon riser bars going for less than half of RRP!

SOOB – dings tend to sell in pairs there – do you want 2 so you can have a spare yourself?

I'll be in the market for a bike bell myself if anyone coming has a good one to sell!

My brother is a tree surgeon – worked up from a YTS, got taken on by a particularly good 'climbing tree surgeon' (not many good climber surgeons) and grafted very hard. Worked for bigger companies and has been self employed for the last 15 or so years.
Very hard work, lots of kit, lots of insurance, long hours, often rubbish working conditions (outside is great, but all year every year). He has joint troubles from the cold damp conditions and physical nature of the work, his work has dropped off a lot and will be low to build back up – which brings stress etc. He is often undercut by transient unqualified types with no insurance etc. Saying that, he loves it – but it is certainly not for everyone.

Pfft – my brother and I didn't bother with anything other than the butt-shuffle for 2 years – as my mother reminds us regularly. Hasn't seemed to make any difference to either of us.

I don't understand how/why weight makes a difference – other than you'll always get more traction because you're pressing the tyre down harder.

Bonty 2.1 and Hutchinson Python – not overly big.

Cycling clothing is usually sized for malnourished Italian dwarf roadie labrats who live on performance-enhancing drugs and strong coffee alone.

Real men with chests over 44" and the tall really struggle with it – mostly.

Have a look at the monthly threads on this – Agency_Scum puts up pictures of what goes through. It ebbs and flows depending on numbers – from 20 on a quiet month to about 50 buyers and sellers on a good one. If you told people on a thread like this it might attract attention from the Bristol crowd.

How is your saddle positioned? Back? Forward? Neutral for knee over the pedal? Have you tried moving the saddle forwards to move your weight forward? Also – have you got a lot of seat tube showing? If the geometry puts too much of your weight too close to the rear axle you'll lift the front more.

No – if you come back and the mods don't see fit to ban you like they should, I'll comment where I see fit. If you decide to live your life returning to public forums where you were banned, don't expect us all to love you.

Different suits are cut differently – so suit different builds – so we can't tell you what is best – you need to try them on.

M&S are well rated by a few tailors as a reasonable cut for the money. TM Lewin have their suits reduced quite a bit – seem fair enough for the money. You just have to find what looks right on you rather than chasing a name. Take the shoes you'll wear and a proper shirt when trying them on – and cheap shoes will always cheapen a good suit.
