Gaynor Sports often have some good deals in their Clearance section.

If you can live with a fixed focal length lens then this is a belter of a deal – superb lens, big sensor and top build quality. Very happy with mine.

Riding to Everest on a Unicycle seem to be pretty extreme to me.

I bought a new A170 in 2000 (X reg) and ran it until 2012, putting just over 100,000 miles on the clock. In all of that time I had to replace one set of rear springs and bushes (done foc under warranty), a battery, a rear exhaust, a set of front discs, a couple of sets of front brake pads and rear brake shoes, two sets of tyres . . . and absolutely nothing else. Had it main dealer serviced for the first three years, and then used a local independent Mercedes specialist garage for its annual service and MOT. Perhaps I was lucky, or perhaps I don’t work my vehicles hard, but mine was about as reliable and trouble free as you could reasonably expect any car to be.

With the fitters typically being self employed, what happens if they mess up the fitting and do a bad job – I guess you then have to try to get redress from the fitter, rather than the store that supplied the carpet itself. Sounds to me like the stores are off-loading the risk element to a subcontractor . . .

I would think that somebody like this company or this one should be able to help.

Need to check local rules and regulations carefully – eg:

“French law stipulates a maximum of five years in prison and a 75,000 euros fine for unlawful use of a drone. Since the legislation went into effect in 2012, around 30 legal cases involving drones have given way to criminal punishment. Almost all of the offenders were slapped with small fines, but one person earned a one-year suspended prison sentence. In his case, he had flown a civilian drone dangerously close to a helicopter.”

You lose a bit of natural light and your view out is restricted a little – due to the wider/deeper reveals around windows. Details around the window and door openings can sometimes be clunky/awkward; also need to consider the junction between wall and roof (soffits, gutters, facia boards), the routing of external drainpipes, soil vents and suchlike, and how any vents (extract fans, boiler vents, airbricks) are dealt with.

Last time I holidayed in Fethiye there was a fantastic “locals” kebab restaurant in the town’s market (not the weekly stall market but the permanent courtyard one in the town itself) – they set up a fresh skewer of meat every morning which rarely lasted beyond mid-afternoon. Local lads on bicycles did a roaring trade delivering orders around town . . . tasted brilliant and cost peanuts.

If the concrete quality is suspect then you really don’t want to rely on a single fixing into it – it might be easier to install, but could be just as easy to break out. Looks like the Torc anchor is available with a good range of fixings – which suggests that they’ve thought about it quite carefully and put together solutions that work (providing that the end user has picked the right fixing kit, and installed it carefully).

Panda should be OK – did a not too dissimilar journey over 20 years ago in a well worn Fiat Uno 60 – stuck to the back roads and had a very enjoyable journey along the way.

Have a very thorough clean up (to remove any dust, wood powder etc), leave the area completely alone for a couple of weeks (so no vacuuming or cleaning at all) and then carefully look again for signs of fresh flight holes (where the adult beetles have exited the wood in search of new food) and the accompanying wood dust – if there’s no dust then you could be in the clear.

Cable outer makes a big difference if you’re running full outers between the levers and the calipers. Use Gore Ride-On with mine, and they work brilliantly.

Karcher outlet often has good deals on Factory Refurb stuff – we bought a couple of K4 washers for use at work and we struggled to spot that they were anything but brand new. The deals do vary from week to week – we weren’t in a hurry to buy, so could wait to get best value.

Reminds me of when we had a visit from the local CID to where I was working at the time . . . . about 20 years ago we bought one of the early Hilti portable diamond coring rigs, and exactly the same rig had been used to break into a post office strong room. However, the villains had accidentally left behind a bit of the drill’s cooling system. Police were gradually working their way around everyone who had bought the same rig to see who’s rig had the same bit missing. Expect they’ll be talking to Hilti again to get their customer list . . .

Duchy Timber do some nice heavy duty wooden furniture for the garden – but suspect that shipping could get expensive unless you’re local.

Have a look in your local Yellow Pages for a “Concrete Reinforcement” supplier – they’ll often have a waste skip of offcuts – look for a bent loop of thick rebar that you can set into a concrete-filled 40 litre flexi tub (which will weigh about 80 kg if you fill it to the brim).

Be aware that in Laos there is an almost complete lack of medical facilities – if you had any sort of significant “off” then you could be in real and painful trouble, and would face the prospect of having to arrange a lengthy medevac to Thailand to get any sort of treatment. Having said that the Northern Laos countryside is spectacular and the potential for off-the-beaten-track downhill amusement there is huge.

Toyota GT86 here – have had it for just over 2 1/2 years now and it still makes me smile every time I get behind the wheel. Reasonably economical if you want it to be (nudges 40 mpg on a run), but brilliant fun at sensible speeds if you fancy a change. 100% reliable so far – have had no need to make use of the 5 yr standard warranty, or the dealership for anything other than routine servicing. 🙂

The company are also being sneaky with their T+C by including a (perfectly legal) get-out that as soon as you click “buy” they will start work processing your application immediately, and therefore you have no cooling-off period or right to cancel under the new Consumer Contracts Regulations.

Volt 300/50 front/rear combo here – have seen me through this winter very well and have been impressed with their robustness and ability to cope with proper lousy weather. I can get a week’s worth of commuting out of a recharge (but also have the option of a quick top-up charge from USB ports on the office PC, if needed). Got mine on a price-match deal from my local Evans store.

We’ve had a selection of the low cost ones at the Uni where I work, for students to tinker with. Many of the machines have small print volumes, low resolution and are painfully slow; the running costs can be quite high too, especially if you print solid components; “failed” prints are also way too common. We’ve ended up with a number of Makerbots of various vintages; not % reliable yet, but good enough.

Concrete often fails in a fire because any moisture trapped inside it turns to steam, expands and fails the concrete due to concrete’s low tensile strength. Putting poly fibres into a concrete mix is a good idea – the fibres will melt when exposed to the heat of a fire but in doing so they leave an escape route for the steam, so less spalling of the concrete.

Wonder if using fired and glazed clay tiles might work ?

Look for used Euro box containers on eBay – we picked up a couple of pallets worth that had originally been used to freight components to a car assembly part – a real bargain as they’re absolutely bomb proof and stack really well.

What you won’t be able to replicate quite so easily will be the mechanical properties – has the original part gone through any sort of heat treatment ?

Odd that the cat is doing this just at night – if there was something stuck under the floorboards making a noise the cat would be there 24/7. Might be that there’s something that has started to pass through the underfloor void during a nocturnal ramble . . . if this is the case you could look for points of entry/exit. Or, whatever is making the noise could itself be sleeping during the day (so no noise).

You can pick up an entry model Miele for around £500 – same tank-like build as the more expensive models but with fewer electronic gubbins to go wrong.

Haven’t been back for a few years now, but used be a regular visitor to Fethiye – there used to be some nice hotels to the west of the town. No beach to speak of, but more to see and do in the town. May be very different now though . . . .

This might do the trick – runs off a single user-replaceable AA battery (so you can keep it powered up by replacing the battery). I’ve got an earlier version and it logged an extended (three week) trip easily (set to record location every minute). The supplied software works OK – ie easy to export a route to Google Earth, and position tag photos (providing you remember to set the camera’s time to coincide with the GPS time).

Thanks all for the comments. Current Panasonic deals (with cashback, 5 year warranty and free delivery/installation from local shop) look attractive, but I too wonder about the ease of servicing and availability of spares for the latest “direct drive” “intelligent” “load sensing” tin boxes. The tried-and-tested robustness of a bottom-of-the-range Miele may win out in the end.
