Fold the rear seat flat in my standard 86 and the bike fits in through the boot easy enough anyway. Granted that fitting a second bike in would be more of an issue . . .

Form B washers (which are usually the thinnest “standard” washer) are 1mm thick in M8 size . . . anything thinner will be “non standard” so might be hard to get hold of. Try looking for shim washers instead.

Something from Alpkit maybe ? – Muon looks ideal.

If the window frames are plastic be careful if you’re thinking about using MEK – it dissolves some plastics.

This Stormsure stuff works well – have used it to patch several holes in Goretex jackets and waterproof stuff sacs and have been impressed with its performance (easy to apply, surprisingly tough and stays stuck).

This stuff [/url] is supposed to be quite good, and has a BBA certificate to go with it (link), which means that its been independently tested.

Not cheap, but perhaps one of these from Alpkit might be worth considering ?

If you’re getting your timber from a merchant see if they have grade C24 rather than the more commonly found C16 – 50% extra bending strength (and usually fewer knots) for much less than 50% extra cost.

Would second the Red Spokes recommendation. Bumped into their guide Ken recently on the Thai/Laos border – got the destinct impression from Ken that the North of Laos is changing fast due to Chinese influences – industrialised agriculture, new roads and hydro power schemes being built, and increased traffic from Chinese “convoy” tours – badly driven 4x4s going from resort complex to resort complex. Go soon before it changes too much – having done the Red Spokes tour about 5 years ago I went back three years ago and travelled from Chiang Rai in N Thailand to Sapa in N Vietnam via Laos, using local buses for the whole journey – had a brilliant time and spent virtually nothing. Make sure that you go to Luang Prabang – could easily spend a week exploring around there.

Saw one of these last weekend – looked exceedingly pretty, although it also looked exceedingly wide. Also stupidly expensive (about £65k), but I guess than comes with being hand-made by Maserati and being built around a full carbon tub.

Its a way of getting to the worksite – without a skill or trade to practice once you get there I think you might struggle to get work.

Make sure that your GP has correctly diagnosed. I suffered from a cavernous sinus infection about 15 years ago that presented at one point very much like Bells, but not quite . . . was only correctly diagnosed after 6 months of NHS investigation by visiting a US Navy diving medic who was also a neurologist; went through 2 CT scans, 2 MRI scans, a lumbar puncture and lots of other miscellaneous tests along the way. At one stage the NHS consultants suspected early-onset MS (very scary for a few weeks). Still have some minor facial muscular weakness and imbalance today, but major symptoms (such as 6 months of excruciating headaches and 2 months of double vision) created by the viral infection have thankfully never returned.

Local Wilco/Wilkinsons store has a “fill-a-bag-for-£1.99” deal going in their hardware department which includes things like cup hooks – its surprising how many hooks, eyes and suchlike you can squeeze into a bag if you try hard. Ideal for hanging stuff onto a backboard.

If your toddler is actually toddling around then you need to think about their safety – an oil-filled radiator might be the safest choice.

I got a pair of 250mm from Amazon – they’re ideal for the vast majority of gripping tasks, but don’t open quite wide enough for gripping things like sink waste pipe fittings (they’ll open to 46mm / 1 3/4″).

Around 1.5 million tons of asbestos is still being mined each year, mostly in Russia but also in China and Brazil; does make you wonder what its being used for, and where its ending up. Was involved in a small research project a couple of years ago looking at construction materials being used in Laos and parts of NW Vietnam; samples collected from new-from-the-factory-in-China corrugated roofing sheets contained asbestos, and the locals who were using the sheets were blissfully ignorant of the risks.

Get a quote from ALA.co.uk – they were about half the price for a similar policy offered by Toyota when I bought new three years ago. Haven’t had to make a claim so have no experience of how good or bad they are at paying out. Back to invoice policy for 3 years on a £25k new car purchase was £170.

Three 3-2-1 here – last topped up about 6 months ago. Network coverage is OK in UK, but roaming abroad is a bit limited.

A large capacity USB memory stick so that she can backup all her coursework and e-books. Boring, but could save lots of heartache and frustration when a deadline looms and she suffers an IT mishap.

CD players seem to be the one separates component that fails on me.

    – they’re one of the few separates with moving parts in that can wear or break – when you think about it what the transport/laser mechanism is doing is actually quite clever, and to get a mechanism that works to such fine tolerances at such low cost is something that is easily overlooked. My £35 would go on a Sony DVD player from Richer Sounds – plays audio CDs (as well as doing lots of other things).

Used Aeroflot this summer to get to Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) from Heathrow via Moscow; all flights ran to time, food was OK and my bike got there and back as safely as I did. Six others doing the same cycling trip as I did flew with other carriers from UK via Istanbul to Bishkek – half of them had delayed baggage with one not getting his bike until a week into the trip.

If its a threaded external Shimano-style HT2 bottom bracket then one tool fits them all – something like this should do the job.

(Edit: from later posts it would seem that this isn’t the right tool . . . odd that Hope don’t make more of the fact that a “special” tool is needed on their website, and don’t make any reference that I can see as to what the right tool actually is)

Should be able to get parking at one of the official Heathrow long stay car parks for less than £49. You’d then be able to use their free regular shuttle bus to get to/from the terminal which then gets you to the underground – which is accessible from landside.

3 don’t have roaming access in as many countries as some other networks – you would probably be OK in most “mainstream” places, but nothing at all in others – depends how “off the beaten track” your travels take you.

Another vote here for the Veho one linked to by philb88 – from SportPursuit @ £25. Used it recently while “off grid” in Kyrgyzstan to recharge GPS and camera batteries – worked well, and recharged quickly.
