Tide and/or water depth could also have been an issue – Padstow has some shallow sand bars and narrow channels – possible that engine bottomed out and caused the boat to pitch suddenly.

Work in a University where a term’s notice is the norm for academic staff, but can be longer for staff in senior positions (eg a course manger).

As far as I’m aware after the first year most insurance companies will only pay out the “market value” – if you get the right gap insurance then it’ll pay out the difference between that current market value and the price you’d have to pay to get a replacement new car. As others have said you should be able to get a much better gap deal from an independent specialist – get a quote from ALA online to compare with what the dealer is asking.

This one looks to be quite good value – can always up the temperature range by using a liner in colder weather. Wait until one of their 10% off everything days (perhaps next weekend as its a bank holiday ?) and it’s even better value.

“Shelter Scotland
Every 2 minutes someone faces losing their home in Scotland . . . “

The key word here is faces . . . doesn’t mean that someone actually loses their home every 2 minutes, just means someone thinks about it. Clever copy writer at the advertising agency using statistics to suit their agenda.

Another statistic suggests that the majority of people with a mortgage are only three pay packets away from being homeless (ie lose job, don’t pay mortgage for 3 months, out on your ear) . . . on the basis of that statistic most of us should be contemplating losing our homes.

Could you apply some additional clamping to close the splits a little before you put the strapping on ? – then release the additional clamping and as the wood recovers it’ll tension the straps a little more.

A hint about moisture meters – you really need to get the prongs well stuck into the wood if you’re going to get a reliable reading – just touching the points on the surface will give an unrepresentative reading.

Get one which uses standard AA or AAA batteries – so you can use rechargeables.

Was booked to go on the same tour but in July but there weren’t enough takers, so tour was cancelled. If its anything like Dermot’s other tours you’ll find a mountain bike fitted with puncture-resistant touring tyres (Schwalbe Marathon Extreme) will be fine. I’ve done the RedSpokes trips to Tajikistan, Peru/Bolivia, Laos and NW Vietnam – all have been really good experiences, and my Cotic Soda has coped well with anything that those country’s roads, tracks and trails have thrown at it.

Keep the thickness below 25mm and you stand a chance of getting it through as a “large letter” rather than a parcel. Lots of suppliers out there – quick google came up with a 21mm thick A4 sized box @ about 40p a go if you buy 100.

If you use the right tool to install the bolts then it does the bolt up to the desired load, then the tool shears off the sacrificial bit to show that the bolt has been set correctly using the proper tool.

These are quite clever and are used on structural steelwork / construction projects as a replacement for traditional HSFG (high strength friction grip) bolts.

USB socket in new Toyota – 130 ish albums on a 16 Gb stick – track titles and artist shown on head unit. Very happy with sound quality; MP3 file compression but set to give best sound quality rather than smallest file size.

The average density of baled plastic waste for recycling is around 300 kg/m^3; a standard 40′ shipping container holds about 67 m^3 so it’ll take about 20 tons; 600 tons = roughly 30 shipping containers full.

Peli case every time for physical protection, but as IA says a case will only keep the rubbish out – shake it too much and sooner or later the internals of the laptop inside the case will reorganise themselves, whether or not they’re on “standby” at the time.

Combined field of view from the two cameras covers all three lanes ? – all they need to see in one of the images is your numberplate.

Try contacting Civil and Marine (or Regen) – part of Hanson – 0845 600 1616. As I remember it was supplied in waterproof plastic drums – about 25kg per drum; I think we got about 100 kg in total which was plenty enough for us to do some trial mixes.

When we needed some at work (Civil Engineering @ University of Plymouth) we found it easier to blend our own – got some GGBS and mixed it with bagged CEM I 52,5N. Readymix concrete batching plants sometimes do it this way to get a CEM III.

Worth a look as an alternative to a Laser – Epson WP-4015 – Workpro inkjet – so far proving 100% reliable, with speedy printing and duplex too; can also cope with printing on heavy card (has a straight-through paper path from second paper feeder). Other versions are available which include scanner/copier and fax. Uses big ink cartridges (2000+ pages) which aren’t too expensive. Have mine connected to a wireless network hub, so can use it to print from PC, laptop and iPad.

Those Stihl moisture meters on Amazon – there’s a Kamasa one on Amazon that’s identical (except for the fact that it’s green rather than orange) and can be had for less – save yourself a bit of cash.

I’ve got the Sigma 50 F1.4 EX DG but with a Pentax mount (use it with a K10D and a K-5); very happy with the lens but usually use it set on manual focus (use it for big stitched panoramas taken using a GigaPan motorized tripod head).

Roof rack – don’t think so – no mounting points, and roof is aluminium (so suspect it could be vulnerable to damage). Also no towbar options (again, no fitting points). Might be possible to rig something like a Saris Bones, but the boot spoiler is almost bound to get in the way.

Boot opening – use the release button on the dash (next to interior lighting adjuster – above your right knee if you’re in the driving seat; key/remote can also be used (button on key fob) – can also hold it close to the boot and the release button concealed above the number plate will work.

My experience of Toyota sales staff is that they’ve forgotten how to sell sports cars – their day-to-day customers buy Toyota solely for reliability – they struggle to cope with savvy customers.

Majority of cars destined for UK are Toyota GT86; Subaru BRZ has long delivery schedules and will be much rarer – probably would have bought one myself but didn’t want to wait 4 months or more for it.

King-ocelot – as the seat back folds in one piece to give a completely flat uninstructed boot floor you might be able to slide one frame in as far as it’ll go, then the second . . . . If I get a minute later today I’ll give it a try.

Shame that many seem to think that you can’t have fun driving on UK public roads without having excessive amounts of power under you right foot, or without driving at excessive (illegal / license-threatening) speed. Me – I’m happy enough with 200 bhp going to the right pair of wheels, suspension which works well on the majority of road surfaces (so not rock-hard firm), and a nice selection of useful standard fit “goodies” (such as dual-zone climate control and HID headlights) to play with. Toyota/Subaru build quality is also pretty good, and their after-sales service has a good reputation – as my car purchases tend to be for the long term (last car kept for 11 years, 7 years for the one before that) factors such as reliability, warranty and service costs are all important to me too.
