Amazing. Thanks for starting this thread btw

10 years ago I read this thread and ended up buying a v1 Tripster atr from Freeborn Cycles. I absolutely loved the bike, did tons of miles on it, but ended up selling about 4 years ago because of concerns about longevity due to the cracking issues some contributors to this thread raised. Some of the best times I’ve had on a bike were with that frame, mixing up road and bridleway and just following my nose in the countryside carrying a flask of coffee and a few sandwiches. Since then I’ve tried to find a similar riding steel framed bike and have had some good experiences with offerings from Ritchey and Fairlight. It might be nostalgia, but I’ve found myself looking a the kinesis website and thinking about that zingy ti magic of my v1. Keen to hear from those that are still having good experiences with their ti Tripster – particularly the v3 before I bite the bullet and scratch that itch!

I’m also after a spare hanger – any available?

    Thanks

Years since I posted on here but I bought myself a Big Al frame with a heavily reduced Revelation fork so really keen to see how folks build these up and what they think of them. The Hardtail Party review was enough to convince me it was time to see what modern geo is all about. Will be transferring bits from my 2016 salsa El mariachi.

Question for those who shelled out to upgrade a v1 to a v2 – was it worth it? Love my v1 but bolt through hubs and true 650b compatibility are appealing.

5’8”, 54cm v1 Tripster. Have a short stem and flared drops and it’s fantastic off road.

I’ve noticed the likes of CrC sell helmets that are a couple of years old – therefore have likely been sat in a warehouse for a long period. No guidance on buying previous year’s models from the manufacturers, I guess?

I used a Yepp mini until my boy was about 2. Fantastic piece of kit, and you can get a tripod for it which turns it into a high chair – very useful when camping.

Cheers all. From observing the hardest part does seem to be getting from land to sea with kite and board. Kite lessons on land sounds sensible.

Sounds like I need a Swiss Cross, but for that sort of cash I could get a Shand… better start saving.

Cheers all. I already have a few other bikes, the nicest one being a Tripster ATR which I was commuting on but decided it was too nice / nickable to commute on.

I like the straggler and considered it prior to buying the CdF but was sold on the Reynolds tubing of the genesis.

My mountain bike is a Surly Ogre which I enjoy riding and I think with some road wheels and drops on it would probably be a decent commuter.

Given I do a 20 mile round trip I want something more fun and sprightlier. I’m very tempted by the new Fairlight Strael but we’re entering into best bike territory again ££££.

Maybe because it has a French name they all like it on principle, regardless of weight or handling?

Thanks all. I’m in Southampton. I’ve had Trestan Finishers recommended but not many bike examples on their website.

Jesus Christ. Never heard of this lot but will do my best to avoid them in future. Bike equivalent of nu-metal.

I asked the same question a while ago as was quite taken by the new rc-129. As poster above said, seems to be a wide perception that warranty support and customer service generally leaves a lot to be desired. Must admit, I’ve had a couple of email queries with them myself and they’ve not been very helpful or keen to sell me something.

27.5 is “child size” now? Shit, better look for some 30.5″ bikes.

I know it’s an older bike, but full xtr di2 must be worth £2k alone. Several places selling it for £6k still. To be honest, I’d feel like a bit of a tit riding a bike with electronically adjustable suspension and full xtr. Think I’ll smuggle in a new pace rc129 instead.

Aren’t these significantly lighter than the steel CdF? I’m currently looking at a Fairlight Faran as an option for my new commuter, although the more sensible and less nickable option would be a de-badged CdF.

I’ve been using a Yepp mini since my son was a year old. He loves it. The great thing is you can get multiple stem mounts and use on multiple bikes with the click of a button. Check out athleteshop – that’s where I got mine.

I have a spare set of Chris King ISO mtb Hubs. Can anyone tell me if these will fit my v1 Tripster?

Also keen to hear experiences of running 650b (I have a v.1) after 2 and a half years of ownership I think I’ve finally hit a set up sweet spot for multi surface riding, but open to 650. Running an ultegra CX chainset with 46/34 and 11-32 on the back. Ritchey Venturemax bars and Surly Knard 41c tyres. Really comfy off road, enough gears to get up steep off road bits and pretty quick on tarmac. Took a day off work and did 40 mixed surface miles yesterday- great fun.

I just ordered an Elite Rampa, probably would have ordered something that I’d get annoyed with due to the lack of FE-C if it wasn’t for the helpful advice. Thanks s lot.

Cheers guys. Ideally under £250. Not sure if there’s a tipping point where the feel of the thing gets significantly better, but if it means I’m likely to use it more I can spend a bit more.

Loads of good advice here. Thanks all. Will check out myfitness app and possibly a turbo / swift although the thought of sitting on a bike in my garage makes my toes curl. Running would make a lot of sense, but having a mum who has had a double knee replacement at 62 makes me a little cautious at 37 when I’ve got existing problems. As far as home weights etc are concerned, motivation to do it at home is the problem when you are next to the tv and sofa.

Cheers all. I commute to London from Southampton 2-3 days a week and work from our local office or home the rest. We are a one car family so my wife uses the car in the week. Manage about 16 miles of commuting on a good week. Running is a tricky one as I have a long history of knee issues from flat feet. Thinking it may. E worth a few £ seeing a specialist and getting them to tell me how to condition myself to run again.

As soon as my son was old enough to hold his head up, I started taking him out with me. You can’t do anything too gnarly obviously but having him with me more than makes up for that. He sits up front so we can chat and point at things together, and I stash all of his food and nappies etc. In my seat pack. We have lots of quiet roads and bridleways around the coast here and we can easily do a 3 hour ride out and back. I use tough gearing to make it a worthwhile workout. My boy loves it and mum gets some chill time – everyone’s a winner. Also just bought a fat bike so we’ve been beach cruising recently. It’s singlespeed so again a good workout.
