Buying a bike and realising you made a mistake, is that a 29er thing though? I bought a Mojo and found it rubbish, then bought a second hand Scandal 29er and it’s been fantastic. Which one was foolish?

I, for one, welcome our new large wheel overlords.

Whats the problem? You don’t HAVE to buy every bike that comes out. Do you buy every new shock, stem length, bar width, tyre tread, brake design etc as they come out?

When buying a new bike it gives more options. Try both, see which you prefer, put your money down?

When did you ever ride a bike and think “I wish it had bigger wheels to roll over stuff”

But thinking “I wish it had 150mm travel at both ends, an extra 5lbs of weight and huge tyres to roll over stuff”, that’s the sort of logic that justifies £3k bikes right? Those fools on their £150 Inbred 29ers!

Only remembered this on Sunday evening, did a full run through the beta, all worked finem good fun :) Best Diablo game yet imo, although multiplayer did become an utterly nuts spam fest, even at level 10.

It looks like a 1980s URT design lost in a time warp. Given it’s clearly not, it’s a 29er, and it looks to have adjustable geometry, I’m interested! :)

Must be something completely different when the suspension is altered to completely the other end? Looks like a crazy big amount of adjustment.

Even if it’s on the home network, you can block mobile data if you’re paranoid. I’m on Android 4.0 here and its under Settings/Data Usage, might be in Settings/Mobile Networks/Use Packet Data or similar on Gingerbread?

In the same menu, he could switch to 3g only (GSM only), which will be much slower data if it tries and give the battery a lot more life. It won’t affect the Wifi data speed and phone calls in 3g are fine (combined with more coverage).

Getting bored of everything being “times of austerity”, a phrase which can get bolted onto the end of every sentence to make it sound more important.

Although not a phrase I get wound up with things being described as “bespoke” quite often, no idea why. I swapped my tyres, I ride a bespoke bike! Maybe if it was used more I’d get used to it.

Not sure the person you are referring to is part of the Mongol hoardes, or is named ‘Atilla’.

I don’t think Atilla the Honey conveyed as much fear :-)

Wonder if it sells more frames, can’t save more than 50g or something, most people I know are actively avoiding them when possible now.

Won’t the lack of fuel/oil just promote local green grocers/butchers/ etc again, rather than doom everyone who isn’t completely self sufficient. Your vision for 10 years from now sounds a little post apoloclyptic.

Do wonder where it’ll go when fuel ramps up, this country is so set in it’s way with cars being the only way to get around. Should be interesting.

On smaller bumps I feel a lot less chucked around on my 29er rigid, than I used to on my Stumpy HT with 80mm forks, I’d put it down to the attack angle stuff (that seems to have died out now :( ), they certainly hold speed rolling over stuff better though.

I don’t think anyone is trying to sat a HT feels like a 100mm FS, but in terms of how forgiving they are I’d say they’re about level pegging.

Meh, not too terrible is it, people would run different tyres on a race hardtail, to 120mm full sus, to 140-150mm trail bike, to DH bike etc. Had he just asked for “which tyres for this weather?” he’d have got the opposite trolling.

Edit: I didn’t like Advantages either, found them a bit hard and slippy on the rocks around here. Running 2.4″ Nics on mine but then they’re going to be subject to even more abuse :P

no but the suspension curve of a single pivot system lends itself better to the maxxis range of tyres.

Has someone got one of those “can’t tell if trolling or just very stupid” meme pics to hand?

My only tip would be, stop inventing new bikes, start making some of the current ones. Carbon Race 29er in 21″ and the return on the Ti Inbred please! :-)

The returns department were definitely monkeys too! Everything gets bounced their way too eagerly as well, even when that’s not what you’re asking for.

I like them though, their only failing seems to have come from their success, will definitely buy more bits.

S2 here, it’s been fantastic, got bored of waiting for Android 4.0 so stuck a custom rom on. Using Lite’ning rom, as are a few chaps at work that I suggested it, very quick, battery life is up to almost a week with normal usage, wifi on, Spotify for 20 mins a day.

The One S is faster, but it’s taken everyone else literally 18 months to make a phone as fast as the S2. The S3 should set the benchmark for the couple of years I’d imagine.

    Is it that one?

Isn’t bottom cup E integral, which has cups with it, integrated would be the ones where the cups are built into the frame?

Ideally you want to be on the lookout for a pair, however great the trouser looks it’ll be socially awkward without a partner.

ESI grips are what I’m trying out next, I’ve not got a set, or ever tried any which should make my opinion super valid.

Currently using 33.09mm Ourys, which may not fit the bill.

The route from Newbold Comyn park in Leamington to Offchurch is a bit renowned for problems with the landowner.

Somewhere that direction. He didn’t call the police to chase me down, apparently they were already at the farm for some other business. Given they had an OS map to hand I’m assuming it was another land owner issue. Bit silly really, the policeman did apologise and tell me he wasn’t going to tell me not ride there.

I’ll just go a different route next time, I was trying to find a route from my house to the Ryton Pools loop. :) Certainly not much proper mountain biking about, there’s some nice little country lanes about though.

Back on the original topic, the Thursday evening RLS XC rides sound interesting:

    http://thebikeyard.net/content/events-club-rides

Rather tragically I live a stones throw from this and have never made the effort to tag along. I know the routes they go along though vaguely.

My first 500 had a broken line across the screen from new. I sort of ignored it for a while, until I found a spot where I was riding less, chucked them a mail, they gave me a return code and asked me to post it. Within a week a brand new one had arrived.

    Fantastic service here.

Bought an extra set of the little brackets too, so can chuck it between bikes very easily, can’t recall the last time I went out without it now.

500 here, on the very rare occation I need the maps, my phone does it just as well. Quite enjoy planning rides on OS maps before hand anyway :)

On an aside the 500 has been fantastic, I’ve really not taken care of it, totally weather proof.

Depends on age I think, there were certainly a few years where there were differences. It’s more down to age/serial number, some were 6061 T6, some 7005, some USA made etc.

They have lots of sand and garvel already that’s why the trail gets blown out!! What they need is some ‘binder’ like clay or clayey soil to stick it all together

They do this already, as well as experimenting with all sort of surfacing on the new sections. All the rain + frost + traffic tears it up quickly so it’s a lot of work, even now the Monkey is getting a bit behind, the new reinforced end to the Tackeroo section is looking good though apparently.

A lot of it is just the amount of traffic they get though, more than the vast amount of Welsh/Scottish trail centers due to the positioning. It’s the nearest trail center for more people than anywhere else.

It’s mainly volunteer maintained by a small few people, as well as not getting the masses of tourism funding Scotland/Wales get.

To the distributors credit they sorted out a refund for mine quite quick. Well after sending the frame off somewhere for CSI-style analysis, to tell whether I was lying and had secretly crashed or been in a gun fight.

Seem like lovely frames, GT are going to a lot of effort to stop anyone buying them though, hardly anywhere stocks them, no frame only that I can see, absolute stupid website (geometry is either missing or wrong, loads of mistakes, even on that page “Available Colors: Pearl Wht, Pearlwht”, nice). That said, it used to be much worse a couple of years back.

They just seem like a huge bunch of monkeys.

I had a Carbon 26″ Zaskar frame a couple of years back, it cracked and had to go back, they had no stock for replacement and quoted me about 6 months, I took a refund. Even then the finish looked nothing like the website, the frame weighed about a pound more than quoted. I’m assuming the lack of reviews is due to them not bothering sending review bikes out.

Apparently the new frame is much better than mine was, this is their wording though, so god knows. Quite where they went so wrong I’ll never know, still time to turn it around if they could be arsed to spend £100 fixing the website and sending out some review bikes. Rather than ALL their money sponsoring the Athertons.

You’d rather ride that on a 26″ hardtail than a 29er? Not digging, just curious, felt a lot more safe on my 29er so far :-) Riding a Scandal with 100mm Rebas which slackens it out a bit though I guess.

    4) they really suffer on ridiculously steep techy sections, as there’s no getting away from the higher COG of the bike and foreward weight bias (result of the chaisntays and steep head angles).

The CoG alone won’t make you rotate over the front wheel tho will it, if you had a huge 2 meter wheel and went down something steep you’d never rotate over the front of it. If you went down the hill on a skateboard you’d be over the front instantly.

It’s the CoG in relation to the front wheel axle, which is LOWER for 29ers, everything else the same you should be less likely to go over the front.

61cm Tricross Comp here, quite surprised I can’t find any pics of it. Doesn’t look that odd though, if anything the fact it doesn’t have half a mile of seatpost sticking out makes it look more normal than the big mountain bikes. I’ll dig one out later.

I like the Nics, got to be the huge 2.4″ ones though, running a pair on my Five now, on big Flow rims. Ran Maxxis for years, do miss my High Roller on the front but I’ve got quite used to these. Big round, light, fast rolling tyres. Prior to these I had an Ardent on the back, ended up swapping it out for an old Nic, didn’t get on with them at all.

Guess it depends where you ride a lot, wider tread vs square profile. You can often pick Schwalbe up cheap from On-One too, crazy light for what they are, can be run tubeless very easily too.

Schwalbe tyres really are the “Snake Oil” of the mountain biking world…

    Very dramatic there, good stuff.

I still don’t get the 29er if you are tall thing. Is it purely based on aesthetics, on the premise that a 5’10” person on a 26er is how it ‘should’ look or something?

Certainly not only a tall thing, it makes sense though surely?

Taller rider, longer wheelbase, higher front end, same size wheels? Most companies go as far as giving bigger models longer stems, bigger rotors, Spesh even do bigger grips, wider saddle, 170mm cranks on smaller bikes etc.

    Ah shame :(

Cheers for the info, even doing a full bleed with syringes on the old one just needed 2 bits of plastic tubing, 2 syringes and some mineral oil, all the bits cost about £10 on ebay and has kept 2 sets of brakes going for 4 years. Sounds like they’ve realised people aren’t feeding them!

Mid-ride does sound curious, too many backflips by the sound of it!

Speaking of Anthem X 29ers and heightism. If you want the 22″ Anthem X 29er, you have to buy the 1 model, the cheaper 2 version is only available in 20″ max. I actually mailed them as I assumed it was a typo, they promptly replied asking what the weather was like up here, and whether I could help change their lightbulbs.

Given I already had a decent set of wheels, the 1 seemed like a rip off. The Evo forks on it are this years brand new budget line, I’d just as happily have the Rebas. The groupset isn’t vastly different, and the Monarch/RP2 could go either way. Just £500 tall tax being added on!

If this is purely the value of the pound dying, why haven’t all consumer electronic prices exploded? 17% inflation per year? Looking forward to next years £8500 range.
