Yeah, Prince of India has always been ok for us as well. Always seems really crazy busy, but they’ve never left us sat there I don’t think. On the flip side the Chinese restaurants in the area always seem completely dead, usually end up there much more than the Indian :)

    We stay at:

Gledeknowe Guest House in the Scottish Borders

which has always been great. On a related note, we want to take the dog next time, does anyone know any nice self catering in the area for 2 + dog? :)

Speaking from experience the Bel Air and the Spoon are night and day. I have both.

My arse evidently works in both modes. Bel Air on my Five which I really like, Spoon on my hardtail which I equally like. Given the price, weight and looks, I’d have the Spoon out of the two. It feels a bit more narrow for moving around on as well.

I’d always thought the two to be similar tbh :/ Don’t get on with a lot of skinny Selle Italia or Fizik Gobis, liked both these though.

Edit: Oh on the ibeam note as well, the ibeam Bel Air is a lot stiffer feeling than the railed one, didn’t get on with it personally :( Liked the ibeam Formula FX though.

Some sort of metallic paint? To be honest, given the weight of those things, it’s probably aluminium tubing filled with hi-ten steel.

Chunky Monkey front + Smorgasbord rear is the norm combo, really rate them. Bit hefty but no more so than a lot of similar sized tyres, don’t even find them that bad rolling resistance wise personally.

They both go up tubeless very easily as well.

On a similar note, what high end wheelset these days uses steel freehub bodies? They’re great when you can save 5 mins getting a cassette off once a year, but aside from that..?

Sounds more like a cash saving than a great upgrade.

I’ve got some properly chewed up freehubs bodies, gouged a good few mm into the aluminium, it’s never been a huge issue.

Sadly I dont think the modern Hopes do either

Buy one of the other brands of cartridge hubs then, there’s enough about.

Yeah, those weights quoted above seem to be including QR for the Shimano, but not the Hope, skewing the figures a lot. The 475 quoted previously is still a beefcake though:

That said though, the centerlock are equally stupid, as a cheap centerlock rotor weighs double a cheap 6 bolt.

Tourer sort of thing, Ridgeback do lots of interesting stuff? Might find one second hand.

Tricross is a tough/road/commutey sort of thing, always loved mine, lots of those around for cheap as well.

can you see the selling point in ‘cheap and reliable’ hubs?

Yes, but that’s different words to what I said. I’ve had cartridge hubs, those on my Tricross’s Rovals for example, that have lasted 4 years currently without being touched.

For anything vaguely light I’d not go near cup and cone, all my issues specifically were with XT hubs. The Deore hub you’re quoting is like half a kilo, it’s probably got another Deore hub inside it, for when anything goes wrong.

I’d rather get a decent set of wheels, that I can swap the axles on regardless of what frame I’m using. That use the perfectly fine, industry standard rotor fittings. With the option of a 20mm axle. I’ve bought a set of Hope drifts and they’ve been fine on every set of cartridge hubs I’ve used to be honest.

    Toasty

Done exactly the same. Had 2 broken hubs (1 with knackered freehub, 1 with knackered cones), made 1 working hub.

I’d still have cartridge hubs in a heartbeat. As far as I’m concerned they should ditch the design entirely and we can go back to using 20mm axles.

I had one hub completely grind itself into dust, the pitted cup locked onto the bearings, the turning motion of the wheel tightened the cone. The wheel stopped spinning instantly, the bearings were powder, hub a total mess.

Seriously don’t see the selling point of using heavy, high maintenance hubs.

How common these incidents seem to be, and the absolute lack of a resolution in any case mentioned really annoys me.

If the police are paid to follow up the case, investigate, file the paperwork, yet can’t actually afford to do anything about it, I don’t know why they bother at all.

Toastie, don’t make the mistake of fixing fore and aft position by changing stem. As I said above, find the neutral position first, then fix stem length and finally height.

I’ve not, I’ve currently fixed it by moving the saddle as far forward as possible and it’s comfortable on long rides. I just feel too far forward over the bb :) I’m keeping the other stem, I’m sure I’ll swap back when flexibility improves.

It’s been ridden a good hundred miles in it’s current setup. Prior to this I was on a 61cm Tricross, with the bars dropped, which was about an inch shorter.

In the original post, look at the angle of his arms, he’s totally stretched out compared to every other example on the page. Most of which is coming from lack of flexibility and core strength I’m sure. I’d still try moving the saddle forward initially, after sorting the height obviously.

I’m the same height, riding a 62cm Canyon Ultimate Al (the same bike?).

Similar back pain on my first ride, the seatpost gives quite a lot of layback, I shifted it forward an inch or so and I’ve had no pain. It does put me a bit too far forwards over the cranks, so I’m swapping to a 100mm stem and moving the saddle back to it’s original position.

By the looks of it, I run my saddle higher, but have a shorter torso. I’d personally sack off trying to look like a pro, as seems to be suggested, shorten the top until you’re comfortable, then gradually move it out again as flexibility improves.

They’re fairly racey frames, didn’t see many 62cm with shorter head tubes.

I fell off a 29er on my first go. In fact, I’ve fallen off every wheel size.

    Show off.

Front wheel stability (with only a small risk of explosion) and small rear wheel for acceleration (to get you into out of trouble )

You could wheelie when you needed to accelerate, like cartoon cars, lowering the rolling resistance and getting the big wheel out the way.

I use Fenwicks stuff, sure it’s nothing magic but it does the trick. Can’t be bothered chancing knackering loads of forks.

    http://www.fenwicks.info/bike/index.php/bike-lubes/suspension-lube-spray

Used to use a different brand, can’t quite recall what it was called. It came in a stupid little bottle that was totally impossible to squeeze onto stanchions. Truely was a wonder of modern design.

I’ve never fallen off a 29er, after owning a variety over 3-4 years. Realised when reading the topic, every fall I’ve ever had has been on 26″ wheels. Bizarre.

Given the evidence, it’s 100% impossible to fall off 29ers. 650b should be possible to fall off, but it’ll be harder than on 26″. This is why you see so many videos of BMX riders falling off.

Stream music? Spotify? You’re ‘avin’ a laugh, ain’t ya? With a 1Gb/month data allowance?

    Err, yeah.

Spotify Premium, which you need to listen via your mobile, lets you download playlists to your phone while you’re on Wifi. No data connection needed. Make loads of playlists, flag 10 or so to download locally, get bored of them, untick and go download something else.

Loving that Tripster. I’d been looking for something versatile to replace an old knackered Tricross frame actually, it looks like a similar train of thought behind it.

New Canyon, absolutely loving it. First ride I’ve had in ages where I just accept I’m not trying to cane my records and just pootle, lovely evening!

Slightly gangly looking, but to be honest there’s a lot worse looking 62cm alloy frames about! :)

Love how they seem to cut zero corners, really solid wheelset, Ritchey WCS finishing kit, even Ultegra cassette and things. Chuffed to bits.

Pondered it myself, contract ends soon. I think I’m currently more into the idea of the S4 Active:

Where’s the “my new bike” picture thread? Sounds ace

My grass is far too long for that sort of thing, I’ll ride somewhere pretty and take a picture after the weekend (as I’m away).

My new Canyon came today actually, it’s 17lbs for 62cm! I still don’t quite understand how to adjust the brakes. Here’s my first ride:

    http://app.strava.com/activities/69733043

I bought it because it’s called “Ultimate Al” and my name is Alastair. My average power was 159w. I learnt how to pronounce sportive last week, I’m going to start spelling it “sportif” to sound cooler though.

    Thanks.

New chainring as well? Old hooked chainring will make the mech wobble around as the chainring fails to release at the right time.

For a start I don’t think any Stumpjumper HTs had rack mounts, all Rockhoppers have?

Very similar frames, to be honest as I mentioned before, the weight of my S-Works M5 2012 frame is virtually the same as a low end Carve frame, it even looks almost the same. Subtly different geometry, different grade of aluminium used, not much else.

I’m genuinely shocked it’s made as much as it has. £500 for a big rectangular smartphone, running a free operating system, in May 2014.

Buy a Nexus 4 and install:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install

If you’re really that into the idea. Even if they sold the ~40,000 required to hit the Kickstarter figure, that’s a tiny sliver of the smartphone population, why would people switch?

It will be quite a brutal ride, if you’re experienced and after something fast for racing on it looks like it could be worth a punt :) If you’re after something comfortable for trail riding I’m not sure it would be the best option.

Software wise they’re almost meeting in the middle. I’ve always used Android, it did used to be a bit cringe-worthy how much they’d rip off Apple, but then the latest round of additions by Apple all seem to be making it more like Android.

    http://www.apple.com/uk/ios/ios7/features/%5B/url%5D

Going through the feature list, all of them seem to be mapping features which Android has offered for years. Control/Notification Center, exactly the same as all my Android devices do. Multitasking like every Android device ever. AirDrop is much the same as sharing via a Google Drive.

    this is in iOS7

    Very bizarre strategy.

Both have a place in the market in my opinion.
