I rekon for riding mud nothing is better than a mud tyre, and any make will be good, find your budget and find the size your after, for XC stuff I wouldnt go over 2.1 and if you plan on a bit of racing the skinnier ones will probably go a bit faster…

I am hoping things have come on a long way since I did all the damage, I realise they have a procedure to follow, but I have no doubt I have something in there needs cleaning out, what I am really hoping for is that techniqes on ligament repairs have moved on and there is something they can do to tighten both knees up, if they can do that, it will slow down the wear and tear on them.

I detached the ACL that took a bit of bone with it, your brother tendon going must have been awful, they must have had to root about to find the end of it so they could pin it back!!

I feel your pain…. and mine, just going through the laborious procedure to get mine cleaned out, had lots of trouble years and years ago, 2 sets of cartilage removal and a detached ligament, and a complete dislocation, have had periods since where all was well, but mostly hobbled and popped and banged my way through life until 3 weeks ago and something really popped, lots of swelling, its kind of getting a bit better but stairs are the real struggle, but its going down them I cant do…

GP is sending me for X rays he mumbled something about arthritis, I am no doctor but would think at some stage it will be a given due to the damage ive done, but an X ray, WTF, be surprised if anything shows up on that unless its floating bone bits, I got lumps floating about in there I can feel, both knees have had at least 1 opp they have great big scars on em, why cant he just refer me, get em open and have a look??

Feel marginally better for a bit of rant… Thanks hope yours clears up.

Even if the RS are magnesium and it doesnt respond so well to polishing is it possible to chrome them?

You could stick these on the system you have for under £100 with new hoses, or build a brand new set for about £140 or £160 with the new style levers.

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=21305

I have just done the same but not ridden it to test them as yet though…

Mind you a new set at that price doesnt sound too cost effective, its a cheap upgrade to you existing brakes.

I ran 120mm Marazochi’s on a Specialized Stumpjumper that was supposed to be for 100mm and I quite liked the ride (prefered it to the 100mm forks), they did have lockdown though to help with the steep climbs.

Afan 3 weeks ago in all the snow, took my newbie rider mates, very testing conditions, just got to the first exciting part of Penhydd about 50 metres past this gate, I was really enjoying myself and my mind wandered to thinking about how much fun the newbies behind me where having next thing I know I was on the floor and my bike landed on my back!!!

Thought I had got away without anyone noticing buy the Giro packed solid with snow was a give away..

Classic hand made tourer, clean it up, new tyres and ride it as is, changing it would spoil it in my opinion.

You could remove the mudgaurds and rack, and the D lock I guess..

Yep, a good quality bike box (all bike boxes are not the same) from a bike shop, plenty of duct tape, make some kind of shoulder strap for it, or get real creative and stick a castor on one end.

Then bin it when your home so it doesnt clutter the place up.

PS, the chain reaction ones look as good as any on a budget.

Oh I see now, you thought I was having a dig at Trout and Turboferret. Quite on the contrary I am afraid, nothing but admiration for their efforts, am actually actively involved in Turboferrets Trustfire battery holders.

Oh I ran this through spell check for you too.

Is you middle name Oscar? C O C

Its not unusual for me to make a spelling mistake, but I got over worrying about it when I left school in 1983. Feel free to take away one of my gold stars.

It could, if the wheel isnt in too tight force the wheel out when you brake..

We notice because it sticks out like a sore thumb to us, “normal” people dont have a clue about that sort of thing..

I went to a boot sale and stopped a kid riding about with his forks back to front, everytime he turned it swiped his feet off the pedals, so I twisted em around for him.. 2 mins later there was a bloke selling new (crap) bikes and one of his proudly displayed a pair of forks back to front.. Yes you should say something its a bit dangerous.

I ran 120mm Marzochi’s on an 04 100mm Stumjumper and it worked really well, and the Marzochi’s are very long for their given travel too, however they had lockdown and that helped ont the steep climbs…

As suggested you need to know the axle to crown length of your old forks and the Fox forks to predict how much the handling will be affected, you can run a bit of extra sag on the longer forks, but your still might find the ups a problem.

Mind you if you got them anyhow, just fit them go for a ride and find out!!

FFS, I hadnt realised they had gone up that much!! £63 for an XT… I would seriously re consider buying XT!! I got 2 completely shot drivetrains but will be waiting utill they fall to bits before replacing them.

Unless the design has changed the LX & Deore can pack out with mud whereas the XT is a more open design and doesnt jam out with mud and leaf mulch..

So, its common knowlege you can change the bearings in a Shimano BB for under a tenner, flip the seals off and pack em with grease for even longer lifespan, could probably do that once in a while and make it last indefinately….

So why on earth spend so much on a King BB that needs almost as much maintenance, from my limited understanding of the king system there is still some dismantleing required before you can attach the grease gun, another 10-15 mins would have the bearings out cleaned greased an re installed.

I guess it will match the headset n hubs nicely though… :-)

Used to have lots of engineering parts sand blasted, and it was down to you to plug up threads and tape over faces that wasnt to be blasted, if it was my frame I would want to be sure it was protected. Your right about the butting thing and its very thin might be best to just stick to hand stripping it.

Maybe you could protect the threads and faces, hand strip the tubes as theyre easy and just get the joints and welds blasted?
